Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Nothing like deciding to straighten daughter’s room while she works all day … only to discover a copy of her school transcript with significant errors. Ugh.

Months ago, we’d caught some GPA errors, but only today did i see a second page to the transcript, where the school is apparently including ACT scores that she chose not to send. (Not only did we not want to send ACTs at all, but they are not even including the second time she took the test.)

The transcripts says the scores are her highest sub-scores on any ACT taken and her highest single-sitting composite … but the numbers are off, quite significantly in one case. It says her highest math was a 26 when it’s a 31 and the highest science was a 26 instead of a 27. (Her other two highest sub-scores were 35s)

Anyway, I’ve already sent of an email to the counselor asking all kinds of questions. Did schools really get this? Why doesn’t that second page show up in our online report (so it could have been caught sooner)? Plus, asking for corrections and re-sends …

This isn’t the biggest deal but she’s vying for some very competitive merit aid (during early action at two schools) and two 26s don’t look so good. They look even worse than the 31 and 27, which she didn’t even choose to send.

@MidwestMomTo2 - Ugh indeed. Maybe that’s an old copy of the transcript? I hadn’t realized that scores were on that as well as on the official score reports sent by the testing companies. I know my S has a couple of schools to which he only intends to send his ACT scores, but if the SAT scores are there anyway…?

I hope the schools where your daughter hopes to get merit aid will look at the official scores she sent, not earlier takes that she chose to not disclose.

@2manybooks to be safe, check the college’s website, but in general Nov. 1 11:59 pm EST. Good luck!

MASSIVE mistake of the day: reading through the 2019 ED Results thread for my D’s dream school that she hits the submit button on today. Bad idea.

@palm715 i feel your pain. we probably all do.

@2manybooks we await word from GC… i do hope they weren’t sent, but the wording makes it seem like they might have been. Even if it’s only internal (for Naviance), we did tell the school months ago that they were not including scores from one of her ACTs.

In other news, my D16 has submitted two of her EA applications, with one more to go, hopefully tomorrow morning.

Then, like many, we will be on pins and needs for about a month and a half. She’s likely-ish (never say never) to get into all three but merit aid will be a deal breaker, quite literally, since two of the schools do not promise to meet need.

Best of luck to all the Ds and Ss working hard to hit the button with their best foot forward in the next day and half! And to the CC parents by their sides, over their shoulders, or just sitting on the couch (drinking) as this deadline nears.

@palm715 - Thanks! Thankfully, these are EA, as he has no ED school, so if he’s off on the dates, well, he gets to wait for RD notification. He’s got an 11/15 deadline coming up too, and a couple of interviews - he’ll be occupied.

I’m honestly afraid to look at results threads. Checking out the school-specific scattergrams on Naviance that show how applicants from S’ school have fared was all I could take. I hope for the best for your D - it’s another year, and maybe she’ll have just what they want for the 2020 class. Good luck!

Oh - and the latest drama… seems S didn’t get around to reporting scores. I think he thought that sending them by the EA deadline was sufficient, not actually having them land by then.

Realistically, both of his 11/1 EA schools are very safe - 11/15 less so. One of the 11/1 schools is in his top “cloud” of favorites of 6-7 applications, though, and I know that waiting 'til April for that one will be hard. In fact, I think 2/3 of his top 3 won’t report 'til April then.

He’s not fully aware of this issue, and won’t be 'til he gets home from school around 4pm today. Guess it’s better to learn this lesson at the EA deadline than the RD one, though.

@MuggleMom Thank you for posting CB response.
“Beginning with the October 2015 SAT administration, the College Board is delivering score reports to colleges through a new electronic reporting system.”

Really? They decide to roll out the new electronic reporting system in October, the busiest time of the year for sending out scores?

“At this time, all students are able to view their scores online, and the majority of scores have been delivered to colleges. We are in the final stages of processing the remaining score reports. With the exception of a few colleges, we anticipate that we will be able to deliver reports to meet application deadlines. For the few outstanding colleges, we are resolving technical issues and are planning to deliver scores within a timeframe that will allow the institutions to use those scores for early action/early decision applications.”

I think they are lying about the majority of scores that were delivered. All the scores that D ordered after the October 15 is still pending. I think the comment about the exception of A FEW COLLEGES is not correct too. D sent scores to 10 colleges and they range from safety publics, safety privates, to very selective privates. All are pending.

@palm715 – If one read all the ED threads here on CC no one would apply anywhere ED. Remember that there’s a huge self-selection factor as to who’s on CC, and who chooses to report on those threads. Those threads are totally dispiriting, and also frequently show the randomness of the process. Some kids are going to get in. Might as well be your daughter.

Best of luck.

I agree @lonetreegrad our Oct 22nd scores are still pending. I don’t think any of our scores are critical, at least that’s the impression I get from the websites. D refuses to contact them to ask. Oh well. Onward and upward.

Still working on the common app. 2 EA schools hoping to hit submit on before midnight tomorrow. We will certainly be part of that electronic traffic jam this weekend. LOL

Thanks, gang! This group is my favorite little corner of the CC community. I actually closed the laptop (woohoo), had my cup of coffee out of the lanai, watched the sunrise, and reminded myself that perspective is my new favorite word.

One recommendation is still not in the system. DD is finishing last two supplemental essays for EA. The anecdote of the day: she forgot to bring her ID to her interview. The interview was at the interviewer place of business in a building with security desk. She asked the gard if she can use another type of identification. When he asked what it is, she said- her resume. He looked over her resume and asked if she expects him to comment on it. Anyway he let her in.

I see that collegeboard sent out those scores that were free or ordered ahead of the release. Those submitted after the scores came out - still PENDING.

Having gone through this process before, I think the big issue really is whether the kid submits the app on time for it to count as having been received. Recommendations, scores, transcripts etc - there is a lot of leeway. Once the school assigns a logon, those things are missing for at least a couple of weeks since they need to match all the paperwork that came in by paper or even electronically. So it does not matter at all if collegeboard has not delivered the scores on November 1st or 15th.

@texaspg Thanks. I hope you are right about the schools willing to wait for a while. I know one EA school said the same thing. I made D submit all her EA and rolling applications early in October. She had a week of fall break, so that was great to get everything done. She is preparing for her second SAT II test scheduled for Nov 7th. I am worried that waiting until the end of November to get her results will make her behind all her RD applications, since many of those have their scholarship deadline of Dec 1st.

I bribed S with sweet tea and a party-sized bag of barbecue chips all his own (an ungodly food luxury here) to get started on his two 12/1 schools (though he won’t submit until next week), so he’s in on the computer munching and typing away. And yesterday the guidance counselor convinced me to run the numbers for D’s super-mega-reach, with the agreement that she could apply if they weren’t outlandish. So…she’s applying. (I’ve spent $50 more foolishly, God knows.) .

Halloween couldn’t get more anxiety provoking, I think, than senior year EAs.

Good luck to all our Class of 16s!

We’re getting great news about both admissions (including honors programs) and scholarships from the schools. So, it’s not a total guessing game waiting for financial aid letters due in spring. These are the wonderful fruits of early apps to match schools my D16 is burning to attend. She’s even got her dream school acceptance and scholarship news in hand now.

If course, the fly in the ointment has to be that our three-person household income just got cut in half yesterday when my husband’s job ended (conviently in our FAFSA base year). Sigh.

@dyiu13 Congratulations to your D’s acceptances and great scholarships, especially to her dream school.

I am so sorry that your DH’s job ended. :frowning:

@madredos That spoof deseves its own post on the main parents forum here. Please!

I was just thinking about the proper etiquette after an acceptance. Do you have to send an email thanking the college for accepting you? D keeps getting things (eg, scarf, frisbee, posters) from them, and she feels that she needs to send something to these colleges to thank them. She knows that she has until May 1st to respond, but they are already sending her emails about deposits, scholarships acceptances, etc.

Two EA’s submitted for this round!

I’ve been cleaning the house like a maniac. My mother is coming to visit (overnight stay). She is the best cleaner I know, so I always feel the pressure to live up to her cleaning standards. Honestly, I’m just trying to make things presentable in a house with two messy teenagers and two dogs. Back to the grind!
