Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Whew! D can now see that she took the Oct. 14 SAT! Yay! It took three phone calls to the CB, because once my cell phone cut out, then I hung up on myself. Sigh. But after confirming in excruciating detail who I was and yelling into the other room to D for her password and email, they walked us through to see that she is shown as having taken the test, but no scores yet. I’ve now heard 3 different days-today, Nov. 4 and Nov. 5, so take your pick.

In case anyone else goes looking and can’t see a test they’ve taken, they had us go to “My Organizer”, then “register” and you will see the tests you’ve taken, and scores that are available or pending. We could not do it through the “scores” link directly.

On another note, D just sent in another app. Of course, we need to see the most recent SAT to know what kind of merit she would get, but from what she has so far, it would be quite affordable and definitely in the honors college. I have a headache, though.

Thanks, @runswimyoga. S says he’ll have his application in tomorrow.

Ugh! So sorry that this is a mess for so many, as if it wasn’t stressful enough. @sseamom so glad you can finally see that D has tested at least!

D is almost ready to hit submit on her one 11/1 application, but she’s watching another episode of Bates Motel and then we are going out for a nice dinner to celebrate my birthday. I’ve made it to a half a century. Egads! I’m going to have a big fat drink!

The one school that D received an acceptance and generous scholarship to several weeks ago (her all around safety) offered to fly her out (or reimburse us for gas if we drive) so that she can tour their honors college, meet with a honors faculty member and a dean, lunch with honors students, etc. We’re currently in the process of arranging that visit. It was a welcome surprise, especially since we haven’t visited before.

That’s awesome @grlscoutmom I’m glad it all got straightened out. @sseamom

DD just had her alumni interview. I am glad she brought her resume because her interviewer was making notes on it.
Spent 50 minutes on hold with CB. Got batch number they sent her scores to the school that was missing them. Provided school with this number and they found the scores that were sent out two months ago. Still missing one recommendation from her teacher.

Not a big contributor on here but I am learning a lot from you all. I have twins and can’t proof another thing. Here is what I did instead tonight! For your entertainment, in case you can’t proof another thing either. (Please don’t proof this as I didn’t!!)

'Twas the night before EA and all through the house
Every finger was whirring, attached to a mouse.
The LOR uploads were assigned with great care
In hopes that the buzzwords all would be there.

Common app edits were all done in red,
While parents on CC were shaking their heads.
DD and DS had snuck off for a nap,
Dreaming of finishing that one late night app.

500 posts later, there arose such a chatter
Which ECs are great and which ones don’t much matter?
Can College Board get scores sent in a flash
Or are all of our hopes about to be dashed?

Supplemental essays were ready to go
And short answer questions written just so
Closets were brimming with fun college gear
Waiting for when acceptances might just appear.

Showing off talents is quite a great trick
With so little space you have to think quick
What is important and what will seem lame?
Did you remember to change the school name???

Now AP, now IB, now DE and GC
On EA, on RD, on NMF and CC
So many acronyms, stay on the ball
How on earth does one remember them all?

And just as we thought we were getting by
A new slew of paperwork fell out of the sky.
Now it is FAFSA and CSS too
To see how much money will be leaving you.

The formula straightforward and fairly aloof
Watching your money disappear in a poof!
Too bad if you are financially sound,
Better to not have much dough lying around.

Blood sweat and tears on the forms you must put,
All of your retirement plans totally kaput.
Too late now, there is no looking back.
Hey wait – did DD just wake up for a snack?

Her eyes, how they twinkle, her dimples how merry.
Is that a transcript in her hand she does carry?
Did she finish the SAAR? Is it ready to go?
The tears from my eyes they are starting to flow.

My credit card, it is time to unsheathe.
Oh – look at that baby picture tucked underneath.
Back to the business at hand we must get,
Finally it might just be time to submit.

Check 3 more times, in spite of myself,
Wishing again for a fairy grammar elf.
With a wink of her eye and a nod of her head,
My kid has come to the moment I think I most dread.

She spoke not a word but went straight to her work.
Submit, submit, submit - then she turned with a jerk.
“Do you think this is it? Do you really suppose?”
And then in that instant we both simply froze.

We looked at the clock and we felt quite blissful.
Then we looked at each other and were a little bit wistful.
Hours spent on the Common App site,
Would hopefully bring mail that soon would excite.

@grlscoutmom I’ll be celebrating a half century myself next Friday. Happy birthday! And sounds like your D’s safety would really treat her right. Once that 11/1 submit button is pushed you’ll be resting easy. Congrats!

I love it!!!

@madredos love it!

Also, with all the talk of the delayed SAT score sends, have we nailed down the date from which scores have successfully been sent?

For example, it ordered “rush” scores sent on Oct. 21 and they still show as pending.

How can it possibly take this long? Technology would seem to allow near-immediate sends.

@madredos that is awesome. I love it!!! Cannot wait to show it to my D when she comes home tonight. I think she will really get a kick out of it, especially since she is planning on submitting last EA and one early RD tomorrow.

Then we make our last pre acceptance visit to one of her possible RD schools on Election Day in the hopes that seeing it in person will spark some creativity for their Why…? supplemental essay. After a while these why…essays get terribly tedious. Therefore, I thought a visit might spark some insight or let her know its not worth the effort. After this she can visit her top choices as an accepted student to help decide. D is not good with making choices (especially ones of this magnitude) so I might need a few bottles of wine to make it through that process…lol.

Yay! Son just submitted his ED application.

Next goal - 2 apps due by Dec 1st for possible merit.

“…Now AP, now IB, now DE and GC
On EA, on RD, on NMF and CC…”

Brava.

Love the poem…

CollegeBoard has sent the scores for his EA school, his last letter of recommendation got submitted today, all the others have been downloaded, he has submitted his app, we are a go!!! Now 46 days until results.

Good luck, Mysonsdad. Wishing all goes well.

Happy Birthday, @grlscoutmom!!

@madredos, What a wonderful piece! Thank you! The “froze” and the “baby picture tucked underneath” made me a little teary, actually. You are channeling @DDHM, from the Parents of the HS Class of 2013.

Congrats to everyone who has recent submissions.

Lesson learned: If anyone is having trouble getting the CA site to submit, switch to windows Explorer. I think I had read that somewhere on CC, but it bears repeating now that the deadline is so close. Good luck to all

Love the poem!!

On the college board website:

Last modified: Oct. 30, 2015

Beginning with the October 2015 SAT administration, the College Board is delivering score reports to colleges through a new electronic reporting system.

At this time, all students are able to view their scores online, and the majority of scores have been delivered to colleges.

We are in the final stages of processing the remaining score reports. With the exception of a few colleges, we anticipate that we will be able to deliver reports to meet application deadlines. For the few outstanding colleges, we are resolving technical issues and are planning to deliver scores within a timeframe that will allow the institutions to use those scores for early action/early decision applications. These colleges understand the circumstances and are working with us to resolve the issue in the best interest of students.

In the meantime, we are updating students and colleges by email as soon as information becomes available.

We understand that this is stressful for affected students. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused families and colleges.

I checked status within CA and Naviance and all seems to be well. Even better DS has received a “Thanks for Applying” e-mail from both 11/1 schools! I will wait until Monday to submit his 12/1 CA schools. No need to be bogging down the system and adding stress to anyone else’s process at this point. #-o

Great news @Cheeringsection .

OK - mea culpa and all that. I’m asking a “captain obvious” question, except it’s probably not obvious. I had to travel for work, and S has been ridiculously busy with thousands of different things that somehow don’t involve college apps. His sport season ends on Wednesday, and we’re all thrilled just to have it done. Today he is at school, all day, for the annual open house, where he has ~3 different duties, and then practice later. He is planning on finishing up a couple of EA apps tonight.

So - the question: Is the 11/1 deadline meaning “in by tomorrow night” - or “in before Halloween ends tonight”? I’m sure the answer is somewhere here… but my coffee is broken.

Thanks in advance, and congratulations to all of you and yours who are getting stuff in, interviewing, and holding it together through these crazy weeks.
