Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@drmom123 are you sure you are not talking about my D’16? LOL.

S hit submit on both his EA applications. One more due 12/1, then the rest in January.

@NYDad513 I wish you and your D all the best. Hopefully, she can get those apps done before the deadline. You are handling this so much better than I would have.

D had her third interview today. She said that the interviewer was very formal and had a list of questions from the school. D answered all the questions and asked a few questions and that was it. The whole thing was about 30 minutes. D was looking forward to this interview the most. Too bad she has no idea how it went!!

The first interview was with an admission counselor who was very friendly and nice. He actually invited me to sit with D. I ended up asking a few questions after the interview. The second interview was the one D ended up in the wrong coffee shop. The interviewer was super nice during that interview. It is strange how different all these were.

@labegg hopefully your D and my S will actually do what they say they will do! and you and I can get some sleep…??

Sitting next to D as she types away trying to bring this final essay to life. I’m simply here for moral support. I wonder what time she’ll let me go to bed. Congrats to everyone who has submitted the November 1st due dates and to everyone who’s kid is well on their way to finishing before the mousepad turns back into a pumpkin.

Hi all! I just realized it’s been weeks since I’ve posted. This thread has been jumping! Kudos to all of the '16 kids with app submissions and acceptances! I am so impressed and excited for you all! ^:)^

Much has happened here in the last 6 weeks. On top of a full plate of schoolwork, social events, and senior year activities, S has attended 3 more info sessions, had another interview, visited a school at their open house, and commiserated with his buddies on the “cheesy” prompts. Most importantly, drum roll…he has submitted 4 applications! 2 no-essay apps to state schools and 2 EA apps - 1 reach and 1 safety!

A week ago, it didn’t look like he would pull off any of the EA apps with his habit of procrastination. Sometime mid-week, he got a burst of inspiration and whipped out the essays for one of his reach schools. I was floored but not complaining! We were also on pins and needles waiting for rec letters, but they finally came through. Whew!

I then gently (okay, maybe not so gently) steered him toward finishing the app for the other EA school, a safety he actually likes. I didn’t want him to face December with a rejection or deferral from the reach school without a counterbalance. But by then, the burst of inspiration had dissipated. He moaned and groaned about the prompts, and you know the saying about squeezing blood from a turnip? Yep. By late Saturday night I was DONE. I told him to forget about applying there early; I was going to bed. Well, my S, who treasures sleep more than most teens, decided to man up and, powered by Halloween candy, worked into the wee hours of the morning and finished the essays for the other EA school! Hit the CA submit button this morning, and they are off!

I felt like running a victory lap this morning, but once I had my coffee, I realized he still has RD essays to write. That’s okay, we will deal with that reality tomorrow. Today, we will celebrate a mini triumph in this house. :D/

Did anyone have a school financial aid application due today too? I checked each of my D16’s schools and none require anything other than the FAFSA. No school-specific fin aid apps needed.

@happymochi Welcome back! You have to take all the little victories where you can. And best that they happen in a way that your S can take credit himself for getting to the finish line.

@lonetreegrad That must be frustrating to not have any idea how it went, but it sounds like your D should be ready for anything at this point. Good life skills.

@almondjoy and @mstomper Congrats! @NYDad513 I’m rooting for your daughter, and I’m confident she’ll make something good happen. My S was motivated to get that last app in so he would have more time to write. He is so much more excited about this November’s novel than the applications (over 3000 words already, last I heard).

@AsleepAtTheWheel I didn’t plan it that way, but getting out of his way for a couple of days worked quite well. It is more difficult to helicopter when one is busy. As at @happymochi’s house, a LOT of halloween candy was apparently consumed (I believe he hid in the basement and ate it all himself).

x#*!!x … the guaranteed full-tuition scholarship for NMF has disappeared from the Drexel University web site. I’ve already emailed someone in the admissions office, but if that’s true, not only is it awful, but it’s awfully unfair (and pretty devious) timing.

I actually checked that it was still listed before our East Coast trip last month, and just now I was able to confirm that it was up by finding a cached version of the web site through google. Yep, there it is, as of Oct. 18, 2015, as clear as can be: “Drexel’s National Merit Finalists Scholarship is offered to incoming freshmen who have reached finalist standing with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The scholarship covers full tuition and is renewable each year that you maintain a 2.75 cumulative GPA and full-time status in your undergraduate degree program.”

Now it’s missing. It used to be between the Maguire and Neumann scholarships: http://drexel.edu/drexelcentral/finaid/prospective-students/1617_freshmen_schlp/

If true, this really puts a wrench in our plan. I haven’t even told D16 yet because I’m waiting to hear what the admissions officer says. But it’s definitely not there any more. And all the links referring to it around the web are dead.

Beyond that, if Drexel left that info up while people were researching / planning for the coming year and then pulled it just as applications were filed, that’s pretty galling.

< The only reason I even caught this tonight was because my D16, who has applied and been invited to apply for Honors Program sent along a link about financial aid/scholarships from Drexel. As I watched TV I clicked through mostly out of boredom to see if there was anything else available, only to see the one thing we were counting on was no longer there.>

Good luck everyone. The wait begins for many.

@Ballerina2016 @EastGrad you have to send all scores and UC’s do not allow score choice for SAT subject tests. I called Cal and UCLA in the past and asked them. I even brought up the fact that they don’t require subject tests so why don’t they allow score choice and I was told they are only looked at if they improve your application.

Tomorrow we start on UC apps

@Mysonsdad UC don’t require subject tests. Even for school of engineering they are only strongly encouraged. How they can request something they don’t require? I was trying to get straight answer for this question for a long time now. I will have my DD ask her GC tomorrow. She used to work for UC school.

@MidwestMomTo2 Wow! That is pretty bad! Please add this information to NMF forums as well. I am sure there are a lot of NMSF kids who have also applied to Drexel. A similar thing has recently happened to kids applying to Univ of Arizona (I think!). I am glad that D decided to apply to 3 of these colleges as safety.

Thanks @Crowlady These interviews have been a great experience for D. She just said that she is ready for any upcoming interviews. Similar questions in all three. She already has a list of questions to ask as well. She might have 3-4 more interviews soon.

That’s the point I made when I called the UC’s. I asked, “Can I score choice SUBJECT tests because you (UC’s) don’t require them?” They said, “No, if you took them we want to see them all.” I then asked, “Why do you want to see them if you don’t require them?” and the person told me that they only consider them if they help an application and won’t hurt. This discussion has already been brought up on this thread. So, the long and short of it is, if you don’t take them you’re fine, but if you do, they want to see them and only consider them if they help. You can call the UC’s directly to get an answer. UCLA won’t answer until after 1:00 pm, but Cal answers at any time during the day.

So what happens if you don’t send all scores to a school that wants you to send all? Does the school get a notice that more scores exist and you chose not to send them? Does a school really care if your send them really good scores and they learn there are others? Is it that big a deal?

@Mysonsdad Thank you. It is very frustrating that it does not make any sense, but it will not surprises me with regards to UCs, I already sent her SAT 1(taken only only once) and two of her best subject tests to them. The warning on the website is a general warning for score choice. Will try to get more information this week. Thank you for information.

DD gave my credit card back to me on 11:35 pm saying she submitted all 3 EA schools. #:-S

Deadline for next EA school is Nov. 15 and another Dec. 1 before RD schools.

Thanks, @lonetreegrad, I’m going to wait to hear back from Drexel before throwing the panic button on the NMSF thread …

@MidwestMomTo2 Drexel has been removed from the National Merit Scholarship Sponsoring Colleges list.

http://www.nationalmerit.org/Merit_Sponsor_Leaflet.pdf

Drexel was listed on last year list.

http://thecollegematchmaker.com/52-colleges-offering-full-tuition-scholarships-national-merit-finalists/

@NYDad513 it was on the Drexel web site as recently as two weeks ago. I have a cached version of the web page.

AND I even mentioned it being a reason Drexel was on our radar to an honors college rep during our visit. She didn’t say a thing. I am steamed.

Leaving that info up until this late in the application cycle is horrible. Really unfair to kids and parents.
