@MidwestMomTo2 It is absolutely horrible situatios, especially for the students and families who applied the school thinking about NMF scholarship. I don’t understand why they did not notify or post earlier.
@NYDad513 I don’t even know what to say. we traveled there, my D liked it, she applied EA, submitted a portfolio, etc, based on it existing. This is not an affordable school for us without it.
Thanks, @Mysonsdad. D will plan to send the ACT and SAT subject tests to each of the schools she checks on the UC app. I received advice from some generous CCers: don’t send UC app for a week after it opens (due to probable bugs in the program) but do send well before Thanksgiving.
@MidwestMomto2, that is a really awful turn of events. Totally wrong for them to change that this late in the game. Let us know what you find out from the school.
A huge “well done” for all the completed apps! I am super excited to see everyone’s results, and eventually the final selections.
My daughter just has essays for two different honors colleges to complete, otherwise the apps are in. She’s received 8 acceptances now; none from selective schools, and all will require certain scholarships to fall into place for them to be affordable, so there is still much waiting to be done. There will be visits to four schools though this month, which is a BIG DEAL from our location. Getting a bit of help from two of the schools for travel, using airline miles, etc to make it doable.
Congrads to all that have submitted applications! Another milestone in the college process has been achieved!! Let’s hope that our DC do not let any other parts of this process wait until so close to the deadline.
I really hope that Drexel is still offering that scholarship this year @MidwestMomTo2. Hopefully they are just revamping the website or the money will still be available but called something other than a NMF scholarship.
@MidwestMomTo2 Wow. I don’t know what to say about Drexel. Perhaps they’d still come through with significant money for you even if it’s not tied to the NMF title? Pretty cheesy way of handling things though, if they’ve removed the scholarship and left the notice up this long to increase applications.
@mstomper “Is it better to be where there’s lots to do but less money to do it with, or less to do with more money to do it with?” That’s the question about a lot of things, I think, not just college! Good luck making the decision.
Congratulations to all the kids with submitted applications (and Halloween candy hangovers)!
@MidwestMomTo2 How disappointing about Drexel. I’m sure that definitely puts a sour taste in your mouth even if they offer substantial merit. Hopefully your child gets her top choice, and that it’s affordable .
I have been reading along and enjoying the company, so I am coming out of the shadows. Though truthfully, I am always more a reader than a poster. DS1 is successfully settled at university and finishing his degree. DS2 has submitted his first application, and is now working on more essays for regular decision.
Welcome @WhereTwo
well, S has finally sent a couple of thank you emails to interviewers…several weeks late…hope that’s okay…I guess a thank you email late, is better than none at all??? Lost the email from the alumni interviewer who had responded with possible dates to do an interview…ugh! now what!!! …
It was one scary weekend, between D’s Nov. 1 deadlines and 12-year-old S big science project, I needed all the Halloween candy I could get! Funny thing about hitting that submit button, once she did it, she wanted to do it more. After completing the three planned apps, she finished another EA with a Nov. 15 deadline and a safety I really liked, but she was on the fence about, with a Nov. 1 scholarship deadline. Woohoo!
Update: Drexel has dropped it’s full tuition award, at least as of this moment. It’s complicated and a mess, frankly. I posted about it on NMSF board:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/18918787/#Comment_18918787
The short version: Drexel is blaming a letter from NMSC. NMSC says, no, they just asked Drexel to change the specific name of award/wording to clarify status of students and to adhere to their trademark.
And, yes, @carolinamom2boys, a sour taste would be a great way to describe it… I still await additional follow-up from Drexel. We’ll see …
Duuuuude…there goes their yield for the class of '20. Karmic, I guess. Really crappy for the kids and families who invested so much time, energy and money. I’m so sorry, @MidwestMomTo2 .
Welcome @Where two!
Difficult Sunday evening in our house. D is having doubts about her ability to be accepted her most desired schools. It was a gut wrenching sight to watch such a smart, capable and dedicated student become literally unglued at the thought that she thought she was not good enough to get into many of the schools she most wants to attend (which is not necessarily true but because of being an OOS where the state mandates percentages of OOS accepted or it being an IVY or like an IVY, the odds are a crapshoot without being a legacy or having some other hook…which we have none of). This was so difficult to watch as her self confidence literally was dissolving before my eyes! I keep trying to impart to her that with some of the schools it is such a crap shoot. Where ever she gets accepted it is meant to be and if she is not accepted to one of her most desired schools, that does not make her any less awesome for all she has accomplished! This system is god awful and I cannot wait until its over! My D works so hard and is so intense about this and I feel powerless to help her see that her true worth is not and most certainly should not be defined by any college’s acceptance or denial! Any suggestions anyone?
Welcome @WhereTwo.
DS has to decide by Wednesday if he is keeping a visit appointment for Friday. Not sure when, or if, that visit will happen if this one is cancelled. He has already applied so maybe not until accepts student day–he might be risking the acceptance though by not touring earlier.
@lvmjac1 No one is guaranteed a seat at any school with less than 25% acceptance rate, let alone those in single digit admit rates. However, if people worry that they won’t get in and hence no one applies, then they wont be selective enough about for people to care about.
It is important that the kids keep an open mind while applying. Easier said than done though.
@MidwestMomTo2 I totally understand your frustration. We had a scholarship issue with a school who was unyielding on a deadline that was missed due to a GC error. We continue to get correspondence from them telling us to apply anyway , don’t let that change our mind about the school, etc. That school dropped to the bottom of the list for my son because of how they handled the situation , not because of the cost. That’s his decision , not mine. I hope your daughter is not deterred in her search for the perfect school for her. It’s so hard when kids have to learn these hard life lessons so young. It’s great that she had you to be such a great support through all of this.
@lvmjac1 This is very hard on high achieving kids. My DD had a series of rejections from summer programs her sophomore year and few her junior year. It was very difficult to explain to her what is that she was doing wrong. Now when her 3 EA applications are in, I hope her holidays will be lighting up with good news. This was partially the reason she did not apply to her first choice school REA.
Drexel has been rather sneeky as of late…
Drexel was one of my D’16 top choices. They had a direct entry BS/DPT program. We visited Drexel in July and spoke with admissions/profs etc about the program. D’16 was very excited. At the beginning of August she sent an email to her assigned admissions rep with some questions about the program but never received an response.
She started working on her Common App in August and but could not figure out how to mark that she was wanting to apply to this specific program. D’16 contacted the admissions rep again and still received no response. The program still appeared on the Drexel website. In mid Sept, as she was finishing up the app for Drexel, info about the major had disappeared from the website, about a week later the website read: effective Fall 2016 the program would no longer be available and Drexel would now offer an accelerated BS/DPT program wherein undergrads would apply to the program at the end of their sophomore year, but Drexel would only reserve 10 spots per year for Drexel undergrads in their DPT school. If more than 10 applied everyone would be considered along with the entire applicant pool to the DPT program (not exactly sure how it would be fair to evaluate a college sophomore against a college graduate?).
Strange no one mentioned this in July or August and no one could be bothered to respond to the several emails that D’16 had sent regarding the program. Not even a " the program in under review we will get back to you as soon as we have further info." Or thought to contact her after the program change to explain the difference.
D’16 has still applied but is unlikely to attend can’t see the value in spending the $$$ that Drexel asks if it is not a guaranteed admission to the BS/DPT program.
On a positive note the admissions counselor was quick to respond to her when she was trying to work out a problem with the delivery of her HS transcripts.
@labegg I’m sorry to hear about Drexel’s DPT program. I am not a physical therapist , but I am an Occupational Therapist whose worked in the field for over 30 years. Some of my best friends are PTs, so I stay on top of things going on in the therapy world. Just recently , all PT programs have been mandated to go to a doctorate degree. Because of this PT school has become even more competitive than it ever was for admission. My guess is that Drexel used their entry level PT program to draw in prospective students in the past, and that now they no longer need to do that for recruitment. That’s unfortunate.
