Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@AnxietyAttack77 – Same thing here. Scores reportedly sent 11/4, but not logged in as received by the ED school. ED school’s website says to give them three weeks after receipt of any/all documents to get them into the applicant’s file. So we’re not sweating it (yet).

Remember that for tests to show up on the student portal, someone must match them with student names. With the influx of applications on Nov 1 it might be that the SATs have been sent, but human hands have not connected them to the rest of the application.

When I worked at a university, I was shocked at some of the things that had to be done by hand, and the man power needed to get things done. I participated in a week long registration “event” where we had to register all the students for classes because something went wrong with the system. A group of us sat for days behind computer screens matching paper schedules with computer student accounts. We had to turn it into a party, almost, to keep from getting overwhelmed.

In this case, the ED school actively looked for the scores today and did not find them. The counselor will send a screen shot Monday morning but this is really ridiculous. The decisions are supposed to be out in a month.

It’s been a month, though, LK, and these are rolling app colleges. Soon, I hope.

In any case, I am here to brag about D. The school had visitors from both the local and national Urban League youth /education reps and the principal had them listen to D’s report on how her senior project is going. The seniors have to update the teacher on a regular basis and it was report day. Upon hearing her project plans, they invited her to become a youth rep on the local level and she’s already talking about running a youth summit on education (her passion and the topic of her project) with the League’s backing. AND they gave her the info on some scholarships!

She’s such a cool kid.

Hi all Congrats to all great news that anyone has received. Had a busy day at work and three pages of posts occurred and therefore I got behind on all the good, great and everything in between. I feel for all that are still experiencing test score dramas. We are thankfully complete with all test score sending and receiving and are now in a huge holding pattern until mid to late January or April 1!

@GoodGrief16 Good luck to your D on her exhausting college tour!

@NYDad513 Good luck to your D on her interview!

@Sophmore1 Good luck to your D in getting her scholarship application done in time!

@sseamom Congrats on your D’s acceptance!

@jupiter98 Congrats to your D’s acceptance to Edinburgh!

@Mysonsdad I wish there were more teachers like you!

@CAMidwestmom Welcome!

Lets all take a few moments to pray for everyone in France at the moment!

Today is the marking day for 1st quarter for D16’s school. Counseling department sent out an e-mail early this week saying if we need to send 1st quarter grade, fill out a form for grade release to colleges. DD decided not to send saying if college wants to see the on going grade, they will ask. So… she did not send her 1st quarter grade.

DD is applying a honor college in the city which deadline is Dec. 1st. But DD’s school asked the students to finish app until Nov. 23rd. It is a kind of super safety for her - it is free and her stat is pretty high for the school. So I am trying to push a little bit just in case.

@NYDad513 D just received her report card on the school’s portal and it is an excellent report card (especially if you consider that she is taking 5 AP’s and 1 College courses, she was playing a Varsity sport that went into the playoffs, and she completed 9 college applications! No schools have requested it and her GC did not suggest that D send out her first quarter grades to any schools…is this something that is typically done or that schools may want? She has applied to some low, medium and high reach schools already and is in the process of applying to a few additional high reaches. Are we not getting the best advice?

@lvmjac1 I know some schools (for example Duke) ask 1st quarter grade when it is available but most schools don’t. When I talk with my DD about 1st quarter grade, she said some students send regardless of request from their ED/EA schools. Some students don’t unless they are asked to send.

I personally don’t think 1st quarter grade make any big break. However, if your D gets a great grade, especially upward grades, I think why not. It won’t hurt your D’s chance and who knows.

@AnxietyAttack77 – Ah. That’s a different kettle of fish.
I don’t get how/why in today’s world is should be so hard for the College Board to send scores out. It should be like ordering something from Amazon. Human hands should not be involved. You log in, you enter the schools’ codes, you pay, and whooossshhh. The scores should go out as fast as it takes to send you an acknowledgement email.

I’d imagine that the schools review the applications using the self-reported scores, and if it’s an acceptance they make sure that the official scores are in before the letter goes out. But if you hadn’t checked your child could’ve gotten deep into the process with no scores on the way. Channeling Bill Clinton – I feel your pain. Hopefully this will just be a re-told anecdote after the acceptance is received. Fingers crossed.

@AsleepAtTheWheel when I said human hands, I meant at the college not at the SAT. Somehow those scores have to be matched when there is no specific ID number or code that would match a student to a test. I wonder how many problems are with the CB and how many are just school backlog. With the problems at the CB it would not surprise me if the problem originated with them, but schools do need to match people to tests.

D has made another college related decision. She finally picked out the new bike she was promise for her 18th birthday (tomorrow!) She found a great bike on clearance at REI, I think was a good choice because it’s only three speeds and internal gearing so low maintenance and it’s not like that there are that many hills in at OU! It has brackets for mounting a basket on the frame and not the handle bars which was a huge point for her. It’s not flashy or really expensive and is on the heavy side for a bike these days so hopefully it doesn’t scream “steal me.” She plans to ride off the “newness” between now and next Fall:-) I see a KRYPTOLOK U-lock in her future Christmas presents just to be on the safe side:-)

OU offers a limited numbers of bike lockers for rent near the dorms and she is going to get on the list as soon as possible.

S11 had bike stolen first semester away at college in 2011 (expensive bike)…after first semester transferred back to local area to continue college courses…since then has had 4 additional bikes stolen (each one in succession less costly… Lesson: be very careful and extremely diligent at keeping bike safe and secure!!!) … Now he only buys 25.00 bikes off of craigslist!!!

Theft is a real concern. The bike lockers offer additional security and we my insist on two U-locks. I’m also very interested in the new Oxford tracker GPS. http://www.dantracker.com/en/ Still to pricey for us at this point but they are introducing their product to the us market in January, hopefully at a lower price point. I also need to check with our insurance company to see if bike theft is covered and what the deductible is.

@jupiter98 could you please explain the type of acceptance your DC received from Edinburgh? I am guessing the wording has significance I am missing and I am intrigued.

DS is hoping to send semester grades and show a gained spot in rank for a scholarship that cares about such things. His first quarter was strong but will likely need to be perfect to move him in rank. I have not seen him for more than a few minutes at a time these last few days. I think he made a very wise choice when he opted out if his winter sport. Senior year is keeping him hopping. :bz

@4kids2graduate That’s terrible about your S’s bikes being continually stolen. I was just thinking recently about some of the items my son should or should not bring and was wondering about dorm thefts. What is your experience or understanding of items being stolen from dorm rooms? I am sure many of these kids are bringing expensive electronics, computers, sports equipment, phones, etc.

As regards theft on college campuses, the one item that caused the most havoc by being stolen was my stepD’s wallet. She’d gone to a party and left her purse in a friend’s sorority house bedroom because…y’know…that’s what you do back home in a small town. BAD idea on a college campus with tens of thousands of students. Nothing like having your identity stolen at nineteen to teach you not to ever do that again.

I suppose thefts of expensive items do happen in dorms, but we have not experienced it. Many schools encourage students to have an “open door” policy when they are on their dorm floor/in their room - but usually dorm rooms are locked when unoccupied while students are at class, activities, etc. We visited Rose Hulman a couple of years ago, and when we toured and walked through a dorm building, it appeared that the students left their doors open even when not around. We peeked in a couple of rooms and laptops, etc. were left unattended. RH issues laptops to every student, so I suppose there is no incentive to steal someone else’s. Our experience also is that all dorms outer doors are locked, so there is access only if you have a key/keycard.

D14 is a sophomore and in her second year living in the same dorm at her school. Their main floor including dining hall and lounge area are accessible from the outside and unlocked…but when you go upstairs a keycard is necessary. She only had one thing stolen, and that was her umbrella that she left near the mailroom, and when she went back an hour or two later it was gone.

Bikes though…they seem to be very popular to steal. A friend’s S15 asked for a bike for graduation so his mom and grandmother chipped in and got him a very nice bike. He took it to his LAC this fall (approx. 30 minutes away), and during orientation week he kept it inside (not sure if it was in his room or a common area). The night before classes started this fall, he locked it outside so he could ride to class the next morning. It was stolen overnight, as were several other bikes on campus. He was upset, not only because the bike was gone but because his graduation present was gone. Perhaps thieves target college campuses in particular? Although in the case of my S11, he only had one stolen on campus, and the other 4 were around the small city where he lives and works.

@LKnomad – Got it. I was referring to AnxietyAttack’s situation where the admissions office checked everywhere and the scores were not there – i.e., the problem appears to be at the College Board’s end (where it still takes time before scores are sent out, whereas they should go out within minutes of the request).

@3scoutsmom – Who would have thought that they have REI in Texas!!! Live and learn.
Everyone knows that USC’s acronym is sometimes turned into “University of Spoiled Children”. Some say that it also stands for “University of Stolen Cycles.”
And while I’m thinking about it, I was able to put S14’s new Macbook Pro on our homeowner’s policy for a truly minimal amount (like under $10), covered for theft or breakage.

Not to change topics, but is anyone else struggling to get their student to sit down and write essays?

Right now D has applied to 2 colleges. Her senior year is exhausting. With everything these kids do, when is there time to get everything done? She actually has most of the weekend free, but will be spending it catching up on an online course that has an upcoming test and since its an ‘at your own pace’ kind of class, she’s pretty much been ignoring it. Her plan is to catch up this weekend. Truthfully, I’m impressed. I would have probably ignored it until after apps were in and put the test off. But… she promises to at least pick ‘the’ list of schools to apply to this weekend. My guess is that it doesn’t happen, but hey anything is possible.

D has one last school whose EA date is tomorrow. And coincidentally she has a fee waiver which expires then. Her counselor has sent her rec, transcripts are ordered, scores are in, and she’s toured the school.
Has she actually applied yet?
Nope.
