@gearsstudio D’s only admit so far has been via rolling admission and its her safety. She has another rolling application in, but the school is holding off to review her app until her Oct Act report reaches them. She has several EA schools that we’ll hear from in December /January. Having said that, we will be waiting until March to hear from her in state RD schools. We’re in it for the long haul.
My S got a letter from his ED school yesterday from “Office of Admissions” adressed to him. We both knew that it couldn’t be “it” already, and of course, it was just more promotional material, but I could see his hands shaking when he opened it! This next month is going to be a long one! @gearsstudio - Purdue and Auburn are rolling admissions as well - he is in both of those already, which is a great feeling!
@Cheeringsection, Thanks for the welcome! I had visited Loyola Chicago with my baby sister years ago and really liked it. If he goes there, I’m sure he will enjoy it, so it’s a great thing to have already settled.
@Ballerina016, those are the two schools we visited and he loved both of them. I think he might be leaning towards LMU. The campuses were so awesome and we were there on beautiful days, of which there are many I know!
@Suzima, those are two great acceptances to have already, congrats to your son!
CAMidwestMom - my dad and uncle went to Fordham, a Jesuit school, and really loved their time there. They felt that the Jesuits encouraged questioning things as they are rather than operate in lockstep with certain beliefs and rules. My father found that training especially useful as a pharmacist who served people of many faiths and cultures. Welcome!
grlscoutsmom-the ACT and SAT’s are making me crazy. D got a verbal admission yesterday but they are waiting on the formal papers and admission to the honors college (and it’s full-ride scholarship) until they get her ACT scores. They were ordered on OCT.14! And the SAT she took that same day JUST released scores yesterday. It’s maddening.
@sseamom My sister works at Fordham and if he got even a bit of merit aid, it would probably be a top contender. We have heard it’s not as good for merit aid as some of the others. I agree about the Jesuit schools and they are really up front about their mission on their tours and in their presentations. They are welcoming of all, but their social justice ideals are right out front in how they present their schools. At least that was our impression and it appealed to him and to us!
@sseamom I know you’ve been having quite the challenge with test scores. Hang in there! For the most part, college Admins seem to be working with students to accommodate this testing snafu.
Welcome, @CAMidwestMom! And it’s fun to re-hear all the news about all the DCs’ rolling and early acceptances. Thanks for asking the question, @gearsstudio! @sseamom, maybe we need to set up our own testing company! :))
I know I really shouldn’t complain, but I think my D actually would prefer not to be hearing so quickly. It makes her feel like they aren’t really taking time to review her I guess? She is into 5 already, 5 yet to hear from. Mostly rolling, but some EA as well. But I still have absolutely no idea what she is thinking or where she will find up.
@Booajo, how quickly did she hear? The only two we’ve heard from were sent at the end of August, beginning of Sept. The August one was updated to admitted on 10/28. I’m amazed that there can be quicker turnarounds, but I know some of my friends with kids applying to state schools heard within a couple of weeks.
CAMidwestMim, my son is also applying to a number of Jesuit schools. He attends a Jesuit high schoolers, and the Jesuit colleges just have such a good feel to them.
He has his second Eagle board of review Monday night. The board flunked him the first time for not doing some minor things that he had specifically asked the scoutmaster about and was told were okay, so I was not happy!
@gearsstudio, as many said, there are a number of rolling admissions schools, and some EA schools that notify well before December. My daughter has received one acceptance from a regular decision school too; their release date was supposed to be January, so that was somewhat unexpected. In my daughter’s case, none of the schools are terribly selective though. She is no closer to a decision either, because many require receiving competitive scholarships to make them feasible, and those results won’t happen for a while.
Well, my daughter was contacted by e mail for her Ivy EA interview! It wasn’t entirely certain she would get one, because of our location. Unfortunately, the scheduling is exceptionally difficult right now; she returns from her trip 4 AM Wednesday morning, and we fly out for the second trip 20 hours later, returning at 4 AM the day before Thanksgiving. And her daily schedule is normally quite insane anyway (one of those homeschoolers that is rarely actually home, haha.)
It looks like she figured out a time though, so hopefully it goes well. I’m glad it’s happening after the other college trips, so she will have a better idea of the sorts of questions she might want to ask.
Goodgrief, I’m not sure! D only added it after a friend got a similar scholarship last year and went there without ever seeing the place. She loves it, but D hasn’t seen it, it’s not in the part of the country she’d intended to go, and it’s not very selective. It’s also in a VERY tiny town, which would be very limiting without a car, and that just can’t happen right now. She’s also applied to a few others with either full rides or very generous scholarships on the line. None are guaranteed, though, so we wait. If she gets this offer, we will go down and take a look. It’s got some serious pluses, even though until a month ago she’d never even considered it.
I just wanted to mention again (or for new people) that some HBCU’s are very affordable even without aid, and offer amazing merit to good students. They are often thought of as “less than” but we’ve met and spoken with grads from many of them who cannot say enough about their positive experiences. We started looking at them because of D’s very early interest, and have been impressed by what we’ve seen.
Right now, though we’re in a holding pattern because of test scores…they sure charged the credit card fast enough, but sending the scores? Not so much!
Well, the score reporting saga continues. None of the colleges that CB says they sent scores to on Nov. 4 has received them, including the ED school. I just got off the phone with CB and they have opened an “escalation” which will result in them contacting the school within 1 to 2 business days. They won’t just resend the scores unless I pay again! I’m so fed up.
@Almondjoy1 Good luck to your son! My son attends a Christian Brothers HS, so I think he too likes the familiar feel of the Jesuit schools. At the same time, they aren’t too familiar. We did visit a CB college, Manhattan in the Bronx, and he said it was too much like high school!!
Re: the test scores, I’m wondering too. One of ours, Loyola Marymount, still shows them missing after almost two weeks.
They won’t resend without your paying AGAIN?? That’s robbery, plain and simple! I mean, in the grand scheme of things it’s not a ton of money, but how dare they charge anyone again for something THEY screwed up? And the colleges are on hold too-wouldn’t it be great if some of the big names started going test optional? What a racket it is!
