Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@lvmjac1, thanks for the Fed Ex shipping tips.

@LKnomad, what a sad story about your mother’s husband’s son. Thanks for sharing the advice about insurance.

@ballerina016 and @GoldenWest , thanks for the useful UC links.

@NYDad513, good luck to your daughter on her interview!

@Sophmore1, wow, not much time at all. Hope you are a good proof reader…

@GoodGrief16, I am amazed they can do that after a red eye! Kudos to both.

Congrats, @sseamom–wowza! Another acceptance. Congrats.

We’re trying to motivate DD to work on a few more apps, but it’s hard to get her started since she is so busy! She did get her thank-you notes written for her interviews, and she did a very nice job on her own without prompting. Triumph!

Congratulations to everybody on early acceptances!

DD just got an unconditional offer to the University of Edinburgh. We are done!!!

…"DS16 sits for his Eagle Board of Review on the 19th, but attended his last scout meeting as a scout tonight because he ages out tomorrow. He came home quite emotional. He’s been a scout since he was in first grade. If he plans to go to leaders training and one school he’s applied to has a fraternity for Eagle Scouts. Hard to believe it’s over. "

Sorry I haven’t kept up with this thread very well. My son is an Eagle too and turns 18 next month. He was going to go on his last campout last month but chose to cancel so he could get all his applications done before October 15. He usually camps once a month but is not enthused about winter camping.

I know he’s going to feel so lost. He’s been in Scouts since first grade. Only one other Cub Scout from his original den is about to make Eagle. BSA says only 4% make Eagle. He was a leader and it was the hugest most consistent of his EC’s. It also allowed him to bond with his younger brother who is now a Life Scout.

One of his EA schools notifies on December 15 and the rest notify in January. He applied to two schools RD on October 14 so he won’t hear from them until late March. He has visited every school except one. I’m going to see it on Saturday. We are visiting one of his favs tomorrow. After this weekend we will have visited all seven of his schools. Road trip!

The subject of LOR’s frequently comes up on this thread, so just to let everyone know, I got 8 requests in my email this morning, 3 last week and wrote 3 within the last week. College applications season is here. I am just posting to let you know that it isn’t a big deal to ask teachers for LOR’s. I am also the type who writes each letter individually (some teachers use the same letter and just change names and gender if needed) so these will take some time, but the kids are only seniors once and need them. I guess what I am saying is that it is a pleasure to have such good kids and to write letters for. Your kids teachers are lucky to have your kids as students.

@Mysonsdad that is really nice of you to take the time to “say” here. Your students are lucky!

@Mysonsdad You must be a favorite teacher to many students.

Congrads to those with acceptances, thank yous written and other college progress. We are still waiting here. Safe travels to all visiting schools soon!

@OspreyCV22 Your sons sound very similar to mine. Both have been involved in scouting since first grade, and they are quite close. I’m sure DS19 will have quite the adjustment when his brother leaves for college next fall. Your son should look into if his college he will be attending has an Eagle Scout fraternity, many schools do. Good luck to him on his trips.

@carolinamom2boys @petrichor11 @grlscoutmom @EastGrad Thanks a lot. I think she will be fine.

@Sophmore1 4 days is tough for preparation. Wish your daughter’s app

@sseamom Congrats for acceptance!!!

@Mysonsdad Your students are lucky to have you!

DD’s school sent out another e-mail saying that Dec. 4 is the deadline for school list (8 privates max, unlimited publics). They say we cannot change school list at any circumstance after the deadline. I think we will stick to the list but it might be good to re-evaluate the school list for the last time.

It’s really exciting to check in on this thread. Congratulations on all the acceptances!!! YAY!!! ^:)^ :D/

S is still working on his essays in dribs and drabs. He has an alumni interview tomorrow. As for me, I survived a colonoscopy. Oops, I meant the CSS Profile! ;))

@jupiter98, I love Edinburgh! What a brilliant location to attend college! Congrats to your student

@NYDad513, I am so eager to find out where your daughter ends up!!

How have so many on this thread already gotten acceptances? ED and EA results come out in December :expressionless:

@gearsstudio DD received an EA acceptance b/c Bard does IDP (Immediate Decision Process). Yesterday she received an acceptance to her safety even though she applied RD b/c they do rolling & her scores are so much higher than what they are looking for. They offered her nice money & Honors College acceptance. Most of the other schools she will not hear from until Feb. b/c they are selective & her scores are right there.

We know plenty of students that are done @gearsstudio .
They applied to rolling admission schools like U Deland decided that is where they want to go, Some schools like Rider are letting kids know. The financials looked good, and they are done. My daughter has only sent in 2 apps with a bunch more on the horizon and doesn’t know anything yet. Nothing until late Dec at the earliest. It all depends on where your kid applied.

D’s acceptances have come from schools with Rolling admissions and one EA that lets you know quickly if you get it in early enough. Not all EA responses are in December.

@GoodGrief16 I am sure to be here when all the results come out. It’s hard to believe that it’s already mid November.

@gearsstudio There are many rolling admission schools and some schools let the students know the result even before EA deadline if apply early.

Hi all, I’m newish to the site and thought I would post an intro. I’m a Mom of six and my third son is a senior. My oldest wanted to stay close to home and my second went into the Army. Son 3 wants to go out of state and to a big city like NYC or Los Angeles. My sisters live in NYC and we grew up in the LA area. This is my first time navigating such a broad list of schools. Merit aid is a big deal as we have a high EFC that would be really really hard for us to actually pay. He’s gotten into one school with a half tuition offer, so we are doing well. He is most interested in Jesuit schools and his stretches are Cornell (RD) and Northeastern (EA).

Welcome @CAMidwestMom ! I have heard good things about Chicago Jesuit schools as well. I hope the process goes well for him.

@CAMidwestMom Welcome! We have a large group of California parents here if you need any information. You probably know about Loyola Marymount University and Santa Clara University in California. Both with generous merit aid.
