Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Carolinamom2boys: Yes, that had been a constant problem here as well. JCP was the way to go. LL Bean will give you the length you need if you find yourself getting to 35". Found one semi-dress charcoal mid-weight at Gap and wrote down SKU a while ago. Met a guy in a store with same bodytype who shops at Van Heusen. My face scrunched at that, but he told me the place he goes will discount AAA cardholders.

Welcome @RyanG1207 !

Two more apps and the scholarship application went in today
whew!!

@AsleepAtTheWheel Very legitimate questions!

He was accepted in September. We may not find out about aid until March. We’ve thought about and discussed a lot of “what if’s”, and we all feel that an aid package from elsewhere would likely not sway us from the 1st choice. When the safety school came through with $20K+/year, it was tempting! I thought about how nice it would be to not have to pay full price, but we aren’t choosing based on price alone. The quality of the program itself and the environment are the 1st considerations. Some aid would be fantastic.

We visited NU a 2nd time right before we went to see the 1st choice school for the 1st time. While we were impressed with the general admissions presentation we attended during our 1st visit to NU, the presentation for the specific school was very lackluster. We left a bit disappointed. The reps were not able to answer questions, no school specific tour, etc. We felt as if the message was “Are you good enough to be accepted?” rather than “This is why you should apply”. I didn’t think my son would notice as it was subtle, but he did.

FWIW, interviewing at a couple of schools in SoCal last week, my son wore khakis (Levi 505s) and a v-neck light sweater (Old Navy) with a white t-shirt underneath. He was slightly more formally dressed than many of the other students who toured and interviewed while we were there. The general impression I have is that clean and (mostly) unwrinkled are good, but that they don’t want students to be dressed so out of character that they’re uncomfortable r awkward. Some schools may differ, and maybe the east coast is more formal than we are out here in California, too.

@sophmore that was the 4 day notice scholarship? Awesome!

D submitted two more college apps today. Next up are the UC’s

The App due in by the 15th went in last night! And she discovered she hadn’t finished her app for another school in the process, so that one’s done as well. Now we wait.
S is doing one last app to be sent in before he hears from his EA schools. All the others are waiting until after those come in. Hopefully he won’t need to send them.
:crossing fingers:

Congratulations to everyone for whom results are trickling in already! It sounds like that’s a huge relief, even if it’s just to know that something will work out, and to take off some of the pressure of just waiting. My S just submitted application #3 (of
7? - I was just informed that one school is probably falling off the list, and a few others are contenders). Working on #4 now, finishing up a couple of essays to get it in by the EA deadline. We toured a couple of places in Southern California late last week, and we’re off to the Midwest this week.

I don’t think any of his schools are rolling notification, though, so I expect we’ll near nothing until late December.

His scores that were sent a few weeks ago did finally arrive to the two EA schools to which he’s applied already, and both have statements in their portals that basically say, “Yeah, we know College Board was having issues. If they get here in a reasonable time, we’re good.” (I paraphrased a bit. ) That was definitely good to see.

@grlscoutmom yes it was!!! Crossing fingers! She submitted it last night along with 2 other applications. Actually, it was early this morning

Great job to everyone who is getting those apps in and over with.

@Waiting2exhale I got Van Heusen’s at JCP and with their coupon I got 2 pair for $60.00.

@carolinamom2boys - my second DS is very slender and long-legged as well. During XC season he looks like a soda straw. But seriously, we have had luck with Lands’ End “slim” styles and occasional LLBean styles that are made to be cuffed but we get a smaller waist size and don’t cuff. He wore Gap “slim” styles until he got too tall for their biggest size (16?).

@2manybooks DS16 is going to an "optional " dinner associated with a scholarship interview weekend. Dress is “casual” so he will be wearing something very similar to your son, black jeans, v neck sweater and white T shirt . On Saturday, during the group and individual interviews , he is dressing nicer with button down shirt, tie and dress pants.

He’s hoping to be invited to another Honirs College interview weekend in January . Based on pictures posted on the school’s website from last year’s interview weekend, all of the boys were wearing ties and some were wearing jackets . Given how hard it is to find clothes to fit my super skinny son, I decided to take advantage of some sales now. Good luck to your son.

@fretfulmother We used to shop at the GAP as well. I used to get regular khakis until my son had to wear dress pants last spring as a Junior Marshall for graduation , and all of a sudden now appreciates the " the nicer, smoother feel of dress pants" He never ceases to amaze me.

DS (30 x 34) gets pants at American Eagle. They have a really good Black Friday sale if you can wait that long.

Yay for all submitted apps! Now we wait some more.

One more mom of a skinny son checking in. We have had good luck with slim fit separates at Kohls for his suit. Would you believe, we moved last spring and somehow lost his suit jacket? Thankfully, they have the same styles still. He’s had to wear the suit for NHS stuff and other volunteer things. When he went to a reception at one of his potential colleges the other day, he wore khakis and a button down.

My D also visited Northeastern twice and was lucky that each tour were both great! The second one was right the school participated in Relay for Life and our tour guide was exhausted none the less great! It is a safe school for her in terms of admission but a reach since she really wants to be included in their honors program. Honors students have options for better housing as well as many other great academic options. She loves all the options for Co-ops and internships. Not to mention that she absolutely loves the city of Boston!

sooo
S applied to two schools so far
and each, I think, have “portals” to look up to see what has been received or is still missing
he has not looked at them
and refuses for me to do it
he won’t give me whatever passwords he has set up. Anyone else in this position? I do believe that he has to be the “grown up” somewhere
but I have to say
this is getting me more anxious
 :-SS

@drmom123, he really needs to check the portals, especially if you are relying on October testing. My DC’s scores have not shown up at any of their schools. If your S is in that position, he needs to follow up.

@AnxietyAttack77 I have to say, perfect screen name for what I am feeling! yes, I agree with you. He has to check those portals
He did take SAT’s in October. The college board said they were sent
but I have no idea if the college received them! I think he thinks it’s going to be “all okay” and so he’s “chill” about all this
and my hair is going greyer by the second!
