Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@lvmjac1 We still love Boston even though so much has changed since we graduated (before the Big Dig). We used to live near Fenway Park. I was amazed that they managed to squeeze a Target in that area!

I really liked Northeastern’s co-op program. The work experience is a great plus. We just started to feel that the school wasn’t the best choice for my son or his intended major.

My son is also very slim - 27 or 28" waist. I found dress pants at Gap and J. Crew, and Levis jeans online.

Thanks for the welcome, @Sophmore1!

I’m just a kid but I’m guessing your son isn’t checking out of nerves or feeling overwhelmed but doesn’t want to admit it. I’m sure once you explain how much it matters, he will do it. Good luck @AnxietyAttack77

My D is fine with me checking the portals of the schools that she has already applied to so she can concentrate on her studies, EC’s, thinking about her remaining supplemental essays she needs to write, work, etc. As her “Administrative Asst” she likes that I am there to double check these important deadlines and that the additional things needed by the schools are actually received. Thankfully all 8 schools that she has already applied to have everything they need and require…now its just the waiting game. She is submitting another RD application tomorrow and she just added one more RD application to her list. So after tomorrow she will still have four applications left, 1 scholarship application and 1 optional honors essay left to do. Two of the four applications supplemental essays will be trying for her to complete. One because she really wants to get accepted to it and one because she feels she should apply but her heart is really not in it (leaving her not wanting to put the time in to write the essay). The other two are not difficult supplemental essays but both schools are important to her and therefore come with a great deal of apprehension.

It makes me feel much better reading about all of the thin HS boys . I have always been concerned about DS16’s weight, but I guess he’s not that unusual .

Another super skinny son here. He’s on his own and buys his own clothes, and finds clothes that fit at Fred Meyers, which are I think only in OR and WA. He HATES shopping and the chain has pretty much everything, clothes, food, home goods, etc. But he’s shopped at Penny’s as well.

Van Heusen has outlet mall stores where H shops-he is the opposite of tall and thin-but they are nearly ALWAYS having a sale plus an extra X% off, AND there is a membership where you can get even more of a discount. The prices usually beat what H finds at Penny’s.

Not a skinny boy, just an average sized one. But yes to the adoration of dress clothes (another similarity, @carolinamom2boys !). We’ve had good luck with both JCP and Burlington for dress clothes, and Old Navy for casual.

I agree with @readingclaygirl! Most likely you S is just nervous and overwhelmed (as would be expected under the circumstances). My D is constantly going through moments of intense nerves and feelings of inadequacy and being overwhelmed. Its like a roller coaster in our house depending on the day, the hour or the second. She is finished with the application she promises to submit tomorrow. The only reason she won’t hit submit tonight is nerves! Tomorrow won’t be any different but I can only push so much. I know I have to give her space and time to process all these big things she is going through…but I will not let her procrastinate past tomorrow or else the others will fall further behind our well thought out submission strategy…especially since some of these RD schools need time in advance of there deadlines to schedule alumni interviews. We shopped this weekend for an outfit to wear to the Academic All County award banquet and she commented that the outfit could double as an interview outfit. I just smile and realize that even in her overwhelmed moments she is planning in her head. Progress happens when you least expect it.

@petrichor11 He does appreciate dress pants, but I feel a relapse coming on. He’ll have a new TransSiberian Orchestra t shirt to wear after Sunday. He used to live in them .

DD had an alum interview today. She arrived the meeting place 30 mins earlier because we left early. Traffic in NYC is very hard to predict and it is the best to have enough time. Interviewer arrived 20 mins late. So DD was a little bit nervous while waiting. Interview wise, nothing special. All the EA stuff is done now and waiting.

RD will start pretty soon because one honors college app deadline is Dec. 1 and her school asked students finishes the app to the honors college before Nov. 23rd.

@drmom123 My son will not let me log into anything, read his essays and CERTAINLY not open any mail from colleges. He says he is on top of it, so I will just go with that! I feel your pain…

Admin Asst, I love it! Do you think it’s time to email if the scores, supposedly sent 11/2, are not logged as of tonight?

@carolinamom2boys - Thanks for the great idea of checking for previous photos! My son knows a student where he interviewed this past week, and another at this coming week’s school, so he’s checked with them for clothing advice. After these two, though - no clue, and there may be a couple that could easily be more formal. There’s differences between these two, even, although some of that may be due to climate. The others - no clue. I’ll have him poke around on the web to see what he can find out.

Good luck to your son with the Honors College interviews! I hope all of that works out well for him.

Another parent of a thin kid. He is a 28 × 34 (heading to 35). I can only find jeans & dress pants online. Kohls, jcpenny, ll bean, lands end & mens warehouse are good options for him. His suit is an extra slim. Thanks for the suggestions. We can certainly use all the help we can get.

@MuggleMom That’s a very tall kid! J.Crew Factory online definitely carries 28" waist paints and slim everything. They have pretty good coupons throughout the year. Express also has slim and extra slim dress shirts.

Men’s …can no find the apostrophe on this tablet…Warehouse has become the umbrella group over Jos. A. Bank, a place that cut my son*s first 35 inch dress slacks. We paid for that but he looked so good even he could tell.

@drmom123 & @Suzima I’m another mom who is not allowed to look at anything. :frowning:

She did text me a screen shot of her first acceptance email on Friday. Colorado School of Mines, you’re right, she will make one hellva engineer. Now please offer a great big merit scholarship so we can afford you. :))

@palm716 How long did the acceptance from CSM take after your D applied? S16 also applied and waiting…

@palm715 - hey, my best friend from HS is an engineering professor at CSofMines! PM me if you want to tell me your DD’s hopeful field of study and see if it’s a match.

I would definitely email the schools if scores are not logged in yet. My D emailed many of her schools when their portals were not reading things as we thought they should be (receiving GC and teacher LOR when we know they were sent, etc.) and received nice emails in response putting our minds at ease.

Our hearts are broken and go out to all in the light of the terror attacks in Paris!
