Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Welcome @bandmom339! There is plenty of torture to go around in this process. My DS has 6 applications out. He has 1 rolling acceptance and 1 provisional acceptance in hand. He should hear from at least 1 more before Christmas. Good luck to your DD.

@bandmom339

My son is a low B student, and sent out 9 applications. None early admission, all rolling admissions, but he sent them out at the end of September.

As of right now, he has 2 acceptances, and one $8500 scholarship. And that’s from his #2 school, so things are looking good.

He retook the SAT in November, so I’m sure a few schools are waiting on that.

Thanks for the welcome @Cheeringsection and @bjkmom … Congrats to both of you on the acceptances!!! We’ve applied to five - in all - all but one have early action and we met the deadlines. Delay could be the programs she’s applying to in all of them - nursing. Hope to hear something soon!

@Almondjoy1 Congratulations!

@BandMom339 Welcome! Several band parents on this board- S just finished marching season and is enjoying the fact that concert season practices end an hour earlier than did marching practice .

Two seniors here, D and S, and a dozen or so applications out thus far between them (and 6 to go RD for S if his EAs don’t come through).
D has one acceptance in: a state directional with rolling and not particularly selective admissions. They’re offering a $2500 scholarship, and she’s happy enough with them, though we don’t know yet what the whole financial aid package will look like. She has two early schools and three more rolling to hear from, so she should be set by Christmas.
S is in it for the long game and April 1, probably, poor kid. Bad enough his friends are getting acceptance letters already, but when his sister did, that was just piling it on.

Welcome @bandmom339 !

Hi @BandMom339 ! My son is a future nursing major too.

Welcome @BandMom339 I’m a band mom, too and @RyanG1207 my D is a nursing major too. I’m curious where they applied if either of you care to share?

Yesterday we received a letter from the government office of personell management telling my daughter that her identifying data she had sent in for the verification/vetting process for an internship she worked very hard to get - all of it has been stolen. Her name, ss number, dob, fingerprints, passport, relatives names, travel history, writing sample you name it, it was taken. How could they have been so careless. She is only just 18. They are offering her three years of coverage for id theft. It isn’t even a band-aid. She will be 21 when the coverage expires. We were so excited when she got this internship. The internship itself was really great. But, I now just wonder what sort of horrible implications it will have for years to come. I would say think twice before sending information to the government or any other institution. They apparenlty are unable to safeguard the information and really have no plan in place for when it gets taken.

@LKnomad, what I meant is I got another request to write one.

@OspreyCV22, most of the time I don’t get anything from students for writing them other than a thank you.

@EastGrad, I always tell kids that the most meaningful thing is a simple letter thanking me and how much they appreciate what I have done and if perhaps why they chose that particular teacher. What if you get a Starbucks card and they don’t like Starbucks or other establishment? However, I got S GC a $20 box of See’s candy because she said she likes See’s and then the other writers got $20 gift cards.

@fretfulmother, the chocolate must really add up. What do you get for your kids teachers when they write an LOR?

For anyone following the saga of delayed SAT scores, I just checked the CB site. The scores that they had been saying were sent 11/4 now show as having been sent 11/16. Guess the escalation revealed their error. Don’t take anything for granted.

@Themommymommy - oh no!! That is terrible. I don’t even know what to say. Good luck in dealing with the ID theft.

@Mysonsdad - yes :slight_smile: I don’t know the answer to what I get my kids’ teachers because I have my first senior this year! But I imagine it will be some form of mug/chocolate. My kids do write a thank-you note to each teacher and the principal, GC, etc. after each school year (in early grades it was heavily Mom-driven but now it’s independent).

S11 just wrote nice thank you notes. D14 collected pens from bookstores to 7 of the colleges she was accepted to (and that we were able to visit after she was accepted). Sometimes there were even free ones on the visits. So she gave a handful of 7 pens to each LOR teacher and GC tied with a nice ribbon and accompanied by a hand written thank you note. Pens are practical and have zero calories!

DS’s school does not permit any type of gift other than a thank you note. One of his teachers has really gone beyond–besides the college rec, he’s written recs for summer programs, NHS, etc. so I really feel like we should do something, but I’ve been told no.

@Mysonsdad I was responding to the email you received from your son’s EA school!

@themommymommy, I am so sorry that happened to your daughter. My husband works for US govt, and he and I (I’m a dependent, but also a former officer) both got that same letter. I’m not very worried about it; I think there’s plenty of opportunity for identity theft in every day life as it is. It’s good to be aware though, and monitor credit. Hoping for the best for all of us.

Re: thank yous for LOR, my daughter has sent initial e mails of gratitude, though I am waiting until the end for final tokens. :slight_smile: Well, for the most part. I do photography, and one recmmendor’s daughter happened to be participating in an event I was covering. Great opportunity to gift him with some photos.

I love the pens idea!! So practical…I am always searching for pens myself!!

themommymommy-that’s just TERRIBLE! And the fingerprints too! I hope your D does not have anything come of it. Yikes!

As always, congrats to all the acceptances, awards, etc. We finally got the paperwork on once acceptance D got verbally 2 weeks ago, but are still waiting on the possible honors scholarships. She is checking today if she needs to apply or if she is in the pool of honors students. Apparently it can be either/or, even if you qualify on paper.

I do cake decorating as a hobby and will probably make some personalized mini cakes or cupcakes for the recommenders and counselor.The entire administration and all of the teachers just knock themselves out for the kids and I’d love to have the money to donate something really meaningful to the school, but I don’t. If anyone has any ideas, I’m open to them.

@GoodGrief16 @sseamom thanks for the kind comments. It is frustrating. I try to console myself with the idea that she is just 1 of many many people whose ID was taken. It is just so worrying that she is young and that they have so much info on her. I am just hoping the criminals behind the cyber attack were aiming for bigger more important targets in this and her info discarded as not important. We are having that worry to add to our list as she finishes the last few honors and scholarship apps and await results. We have a few acceptances so at least I know she will go to college.

On a separate topic, a few of us used to go in together to buy gifts for teachers so that we could get something nicer than what any one of us individually could afford or feel comfortable giving. Perhaps you could have you kids talk to classmates who have asked the same teacher for recommendations and pool money to get for example tickets to the opera for a music teacher who wrote recommendations or to a play for an english teacher. We used to do that for our piano teacher and she always seemed to really enjoy it.

Ours that were marked sent on 11/4, then changed to pending who knows when, now say sent as of yesterday. I called them yesterday. Thing is, how do we even trust they are sent? So annoying. Particularly because this one school is probably close to the top of his list, if not at the top. If it had been a different one, it would not be such a stressor.

Call the school and ask if they have been received. That’s what I did and they confirmed.
