Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@Smilla My D has 9 applications in (7EA and 2 RD). Everyone of the 7 EA apps are for really good schools and would be considered safes or targets (except for 2 of the OOS EA’s which because of their OOS acceptance percentages makes them a reach). She would be extremely happy any of them BUT the RD’s are all the selective or very selective high reach colleges which she would rise or fall depending on their decision (we try to help her understand that it doesn’t matter what school she goes to as long as she happy but she doesn’t seem to be hearing us). She is fixated on the fact that all her hard work has got to show for something (by getting into one or two of her high reaches)! What are “lottery schools”? I do not think my D has any schools that fit that criteria on her list. My hubby and I are just bracing ourselves for that day (in the end of March or beginning of April) that the decisions come out for the very selective high reach schools come out…we will either be celebrating with her or trying to control the hysterics! Buying stock in Kleenex just in case!

@outwher Cool! Those other two were on my radar, but we just didn’t have enough time to fit them all in. He had to miss two days of school just to see the three we saw. They allow three days for visits, which is nice, but if you are going to very many, it takes way more time. We went to NYC over spring break last year and all three schools were also on break, so the tours weren’t quite as helpful.

Curious, are you all finding a variety of styles of communication among the colleges your kids are applying to. We are admittedly applying to a lot, but I find myself getting mildly annoyed at how some apps seem to go into the black hole while other schools have portals and regularly communicate about missing info and/or status. After hearing nothing from one of his rolling schools for well over six weeks, I emailed the school and was told that she checked and that there was a ‘small glitch’ in his app but not to worry, he should hear something in a couple of weeks. What if I hadn’t checked? I suppose at some point they might’ve discovered the glitch, but in some way it does make me wonder overall about how it would be to deal with the school. Perhaps we/I am just too accustomed to more instantaneous results now?

DS16 just received his official “Tigerbound” envelope in the mail with a nice scholarship offer in the mail today. Woo hoo!! =D>

Wow Carolinamom2boys that is great Congrats!

Congrats to your son @carolinamom2boys on both the acceptance and the scholarship!

Congrats @carolinamom2boys!

@themommymommy I wanted to share earlier that my husband and I and undoubtedly most of our neighbors in our DC suburb are among the 4 million or so people whose data were stolen in the recent government security breach. Life goes on, we watch for unusual activity using the free service they provided us.

@lvmjac1 A lottery school would have such a low acceptance rate (< 15% I would say) that even for super highly qualified applicants it seems quite random which ones get in. We don’t have any of those, thank goodness.

Thanks everyone. Heading off to Eagle Scout Board of Review now. It’s been an exciting , but emotionally exhausting day.

Good luck to your son @carolinamom2boys

Good luck to your DS carolinamom2boys! And congratulations to him on the acceptance/merit!

Good luck @carolinamom2boys! My son '16 is an Eagle too, so I can fully appreciate how you are feeling!

Good Luck and Congratulations to your son @carolinamom2boys

What an exciting day!

@Smilla Another New Yorker is here. Your DD seems similar to my DD. She also sent out 4 EA schools. One lottery, 2 oos and 1 instate. did her interview last week.

@lvmjac1 Yes, @crowlady is right, a lottery school is one with such low admission rates that even if a kiddo has high gpa, high test scores, extracurriculars, etc. such that they are in the running, it’s still a complete crapshoot as to whether or not they ultimately end up as one of the annointed. My kiddo knows the chances are low low low, but that doesn’t seem to keep her from hoping. We, too, tell her it doesn’t matter where she goes to college – what matters is what she does there. But. It’s a weird sort of validation they’re seeking. @NYDad513 We were private and now public. It’s been…interesting.

@Smilla My D16’s high school is public but the characteristic of her school is very close to private school. Her school is not showing up most of public school ranking because of the school character.

@carolinamom Congrats. When your son walks out of Board of Review he’s officially an Eagle. Today’s date will be the date of the award on the certificate when he gets it.

Are you residents of SC? Did he get into Clemson? That’s wonderful.

Son got into VCU today. It’s his ultra safety since we live in Richmond. We will hear from one more school before Christmas and everything else in January and March.

So frustrated! D’s GC still hasn’t uploaded a LOR for an honors application. It was due on Sunday. GC has known about it for weeks. The letter is written, just needs to be uploaded. Deadline was last weekend. Admissions extended it for D until Friday (tomorrow). D has emailed and left notes for GC (she’s been busy and not in office much), I’ve emailed GC and I spoke to her in person about it last night. Nothing! I guess I’ll be going to visit her again tomorrow. Ugh!

@grlscoutmom That sounds terribly frustrating. At this point, as the parent, I would push the GC very hard. as she is being very unfair to your D.

We got one more app uploaded tonight. Still a few more to go, including one with a Dec. 1 priority deadline.

@grlscoutmom Go to the principal in the AM and don’t leave until it’s sent.

@grlscoutmom I’d be tempted to say, let me have a desk, I’ll upload it myself. Hope you get results quickly tomorrow.
