@OspreyCV22 We do live in SC and he did have provisional experience since last spring, but he was waiting for his official notification.
Thanks for your kind words . We were told not to identify himself as an Eagle
until he received paperwork from the National Office even through the board signed off on the recommendation.
Congratulations on your S16âs eagle scout @carolinamom2boys and regarding âtiger boundâ status! Visited Clemson with S11 and D14 who were both accepted as oos students with oos recruiting scholarshipsâŠneither enrolled as the scholarship was not enough to make it affordable, but I loved the school when we visited (my kids loved it as well)! I wish it was more affordable for us as experience with visits was awesome and both kids were very interested! I loved the campus, the tour, the honors open house and tour, and the engineering programâŠbut alas, having one of my kids attend is not to beâŠ
What a crazy long day here! D had her 1st quarter exhibition tonight. The students in all grades do projects based on whatever theyâre studying at the time and do presentations to the parents. Senior projects are based on the all-year project that will wrap up with a âdefenseâ of the topic in front of professionals in the field. The 6th graders seem to tiny now! But they had interesting âancient civilizationâ models.
We found out that tomorrow ALL seniors will have the entire day to work on applications and other college-related things. D is way ahead of her classmates, but still has three more to do and an honors app, plus a new scholarship opportunity. So sheâll be busy like everyone else. But what a great idea! Each of the kids are bringing in food to share as well.
As always, congrats to everyone with new of awards, acceptances and $$!
Thanks for the explanation @crowlady and @Smilla on the lottery school. Based on that definition then I must re-qualify my Dâs list - of her 7 EAâs 2 would be considered lottery schools and of her RD schools 4 would be considered lottery schools. And your comment âItâs a weird sort of validation theyâre seekingâ is right on point! I couldnât have said it better.
@grlscoutmom I too would be livid especially since the GC had plenty of advanced notice of this requirement! It is so frustrating to have to deal with these situations on top of an already stressful time for these students! We have our fingers crossed that all will be ok!
@crowlady thanks for your comment. it is good to know that not much has happened to most people whose data was taken.
@grlscoutmom I hope things work out with the letter of recommendation. That is really frustrating, and it is a hard line to walk between wanting to push the GC and wanting to avoid conflict that might spill over into the recommendation. @sseamom between the lightsabers, the exhibition night and the day to work on apps I think your school sounds like a great place to have gone to school.
Public HS, no dues. DD purchased her class ring last year and wears when possible. Yearbooks are purchased yearly nothing different with them. Prom is at everyoneâs cost of what you want to put into it. Funds raised with the Junior class handles decorations so there is no cost there. Cap and gown order forms are outrageous with the items they are trying to sell you!! We will look at everything this weekend but I seriously doubt there will be a lot of extras. Daughter is looking forward to Prom (always the date dilemma) and graduation. WhewâŠyou guys are being chatty. I have been under the weather so a lot of catching up.
Thank you everyone. GC just submitted the LOR. Hooray! GC emailed me very late last night and promised to take care of it today, which she did. All is good. I think itâs funny that the application that has caused the most stress (so far) has been for Dâs financial/academic safety. Weâre touring (for the first time) on Monday.
themommymommy-it is a FANTASTIC school! It isnât for everyone, but it is offers so much that large traditional schools just canât. At the exhibitions last night, one of the students was explaining his research and said that one of the points they had to cover was how the school has helped (or not helped) in preparing them for that possible career. Theyâd had to work the entire project around different career paths, read research journals in those fields, interview professionals doing that work, and much more. So the kid said, âHow did it help me? Well, in EVERY area. I feel completely ready to go to college and beyond because of this school.â They all feel that way.
S16âs ED application was submitted weeks ago. The deadline was Nov 15. Today he got an generic email from the school that if all supporting materials are not received by Nov 25 his application may not get âfull considerationâ. On the portal everything is logged in as being there except for his SAT scores.
We requested that his scores be sent on Oct 23. The CB website says they were sent on Nov 4. We spoke to the schoolâs admissions office, who was distinctly not helpful, who told us that they donât have the scores. I called the CB and spoke to a representative that was clearly in some third world country. She was even less helpful than the school.
The school recommended that we have the high schoolâs GC send a âcopyâ of the scores. That was done today. So I guess that S16âs app is in good shape, but who knows? Heâll call the school again on Monday. I told the CB that Iâm going to dispute the credit card charge for sending the scores, as I have no evidence that they were ever sent. The whole thing is very unsatisfying. If my competence were at the same level as the CBâs thereâd be a lot of dead patients out there.
Ouch! Sorry to know that this is happening to you, AsleepAtTheWheel.
I can see that there will be heads rolling over at the College Board sometime in the near future. What recourse do parents have, do you think, other than disputing the credit card charge? My husband thinks the College Board is responsible to each parent and family for whom they have failed to respond in a reasonable time frame, and that colleges are complicit in the duty the College Board has to deliver the scores to the appropriate schools, in that colleges require them to be sent ONLY through the College Board.
I told him he is wasting his breath thinking that parents are going to go after the colleges for their contractual relationship with the College Board, and yetâŠ
DD started another app tonight. It is not CA school and requires two essays. So it will take some time. Anyway, it is honors college and super safety for her.
D16 submitted her Ontario applications tonight. All applications are submitted on one online form. She can apply up to 3 programs at each university. Each application is $50 which is a huge increase from when S14 submitted his applications. I think those were about $30. No essays are submitted at this time. Only a few programs require them and she will get the prompts or forms sometime in December/January. Her grade 11 marks are already attached to her form - uploaded from her high school. Canadian universities donât consider grade 9 or 10 grades. There are no standardized test requirements. Compared to the multiple essays required for each US university, Canadian applications are easy peasy.
D16 submitted 2 US applications EA. Sheâs planning to do 2 more by December 1. There are 6-7 more over winter break to be submitted if her favorite EA doesnât come through. Sheâs signed up for December ACT and January SAT subject tests, trying to increase her scores. Sheâs applying for math-related programs, but she wonât finish the equivalent of pre-calculus until January, and start calculus at that time. So, her current math scores donât quite reflect her abilities.
Thereâs a lot of angst and anxiety - âWhat if I donât get in anywhere?â
@AsleepAtTheWheel that is really terrible that not even the college is able to help you figure it out. I imagine the colleges are really tired of dealing with this ongoing collegeboard caused fiasco. I wonder if the person you spoke to even bothered to check the file. I suppose the college board figures they are more or less untouchable since it is virtually impossible to prove damages since college admissions is just too often difficult to predict. It is really sad to think of all the students who are missing out on opportunities due this score sending problem. I hope the situation resolves for your family soon and that the early action results are favorable.
@bouders I am surprised by your post. When my son was applying to Canadian schools, specifically U Toronto and McGill U, he had to have SAT and subject tests and transcripts and essays for the specific college (learning community would be the USA equiv from what I could tell). It was not as subjective seemingly as the US admissions process but still required a fair amount of testing and documentation. Grade 11 was still the last year of highshool for some of the highschools in Quebec. Things must have really changed over the last three years. Makes me wish I had pushed my daughter to apply to some Canadian schools.
