Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Welcome, @Undercovermom1.

@carolinamom2boys, I think @Petrichor11 is right: ā€œSenior Memberā€ status begins at 1000 posts. Congratulations! I intended to write something significant when I reached ā€œMemberā€ at 300, but I forgot and let that post slip by! I got to 250 with DC#1; now working on DC#2 and may make it to around 500 by next May; thinking I’ll reach ā€œSenior Memberā€ status with DC#4. Please tell me it comes with the equivalent of AARP benefits…

Good luck to those of you struggling with rec issues (@mysonsdad) and those of you continuing to deal with CB.

And Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who is celebrating tomorrow! My DS13 is home. He has already raked a garbage can full of leaves and is playing Minecraft now to indulge his little sis. The planets are aligned.

Sitting in Panera with D as she reviews her UC app one last time.

@EastGrad: That was just the sweetest.

Hey, everyone! Congratulations on all of the acceptances! Wow - this is really making it seem real, and so fast!

S and I spent a couple of days each of the past two weeks doing college visits, first to one here in CA, and then to one in the Midwest. He really liked both, for different reasons, but knows that the closer of the two is a crazy longshot, so was pleased that he liked the other as well. Then last night at dinner he casually mentioned that he’d received a likely letter from a school back east that we visited back over Spring Break - an EA app, not quite at the top of the pile, but it could climb there depending on any merit money that might come in.

It’s a relief just to have that one acceptance. He decided to roll the dice and not apply to any UC/CSU schools, and I think we were all sort of holding our breath to make sure that something would still come through. He’s got a couple of others that are likely, and if neither of the ones we visited (both on the list of ā€œtop liberal arts collegesā€ - so both big longshots) pan out, he’ll still be happy.

I was a little worried about the school name on the recommendation issue. I’m sure it happens all the time though. My son’s EA school has it’s own app and I know the teacher’s customized their letters around that school. My son did send the CA invites to them a few days later and I feel confident one changed it but the other doesn’t write that many recs so ehhh better not even knowing at this point. His EA is a super reach type school so other schools shouldn’t hold that against him or think he would definitely get in because no one is definite there. So many minor issues to worry about!

I don’t worry about other school name on LOR. I think every AO knows that every student applies multiple schools and it is not a fault of students but teachers. They should not be penalized by those mistake and the purpose of LOR is to know the students well regarding academics and other stuff. I think AO understand well about this kind of mistake. It is obvious they encounter many cases every year.

Ok. All D16’s apps are in and she’s still awaiting admission decisions by just 4 of the 13. The institutional scholarship and honors apps are done and in.

Now, the FAFSA form is sitting on the kitchen counter, and we intend to submit it on January 1st…which is not so long from now! Must start learning about all the ins and outs of FAFSA.

Aw, shucks, thanks @waitingtoexhale.

I am thinking the same thing @NYDad513, however, thanks to @Ballerina2016 advice S is able to get around the issue.

My DD’13 just got in on the train. I was just thinking it is gonna cost twice as much next year to bring kids home for Thanksgiving if DS’16 ends up at a school up north too. Normally Amtrak is about $75 each way for DD but of course at TG it is twice as much.

We are in wait and see mode here. DS has one more app to fill out before Dec1 then we will wait until ED school releases their decisions before submitting anymore apps. I could say I hope he’ll be working on essays in the mean time but honestly I know he won’t until he has to.

DD submitted her UC application. One more application needs to go out before the end of the month.

When we picked up DS13 at the airport yesterday, I was thinking the same thing about 2x the cost of trips to and from school next year, @Dragonflygarden! But then again, it’s worth it, right? Hugs to your '13 kid; I feel almost like I know her. I bet we’ll all feel that way about our 16ers by April.

It seems every time I check in, there’s more good news! Congrats, everyone! :D/ ^:)^

It’s been a good week here. S went on an overnight visit to his fave school. Came home raving about his new friends, the food, the professors, and the classes he visted. He texted, ā€œEVERYONE IS SO SMART! It’s the most amazing wonderful thing! Now I just need to get in.ā€ Then, best text ever: ā€œTry not to worry too much.ā€ :x

In the tradition of The Great Halloween Miracle (EA apps), tonight we are celebrating The Great Thanksgiving Miracle! UC app has been submitted! Now I can eat turkey and take a tryptophan-induced nap tomorrow! <:-P

Shhh…please don’t remind me that his Dec. 1 app deadline is right around the corner. ;))

I was giving a last check to S’s UC application on the UC app website and found this on the login page.

May your stuffing be tasty, may your turkey be plump, may you finish your application before the tryptophan slump. Remember to submit your application by November 30th!

Good luck to all the fellow UC and CSU applicants! The deadline is coming!!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all! We celebrated last Saturday because my mother has to work today. So it will be a more laid back Thanksgiving for us.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

It just occurred to me that this time next year this may be the first trip home from college for my S.

Everyone enjoy your day and time with your children . Things will be very different soon enough .

I haven’t been here for a while. Congratulations to all acceptances.

D16 has heard back from 4 schools, all safeties and all acceptances in Honors colleges. All give her either full ride or full tuition plus (she is a NMF). So, I am glad she has a place to go. She is also a semifinalist for a prestigious scholarship. This one is very hard to get, I was shocked that she even got to this stage, so we just have to wait and see.

No news from two schools (one EA and one rolling) that have stats well below D’s. A lot of people with lower stats have already been accepted. Oh well, I have a feeling she will get deferred in both since you have to show a lot of interests and D didn’t. She doesn’t express a lot of interests in any of the schools. I think she doesn’t want to be very disappointed if she doesn’t get in. Four more applications to do this weekend and several scholarship applications due Dec 5th. I think I have to start nagging starting tomorrow. Today I am too busy cooking!

Happy Thanksgiving and good luck to all

S16 will wait for the last minute to finish essays for the UC application. S14 is home, Grandma is visiting, and we are hosting cousins for Thanksgiving. Well-oiled machine around here (having hosted almost every year of S16’s life) but there’s always the ā€œShoot, forgot to buy the Xā€ and the desire of teens to sleep all day. Cherish your time with your children, even if they sleep past noon.

@mysonsdad, I was just about to post the same thing about our kids coming home from college for the first time this time next year. One of his choices is further away, but if they have a one week break we might still see him. He seem to be feeling better; he helped my wife make a jello mold last night and is planning on making something else today. I hope everyone has a relaxing holiday.
