@LKnomad What a great idea about eating out on the decision day! You just gave me an idea. We should plan something to get her out of the house. Maybe plan a movie night or see one of the shows.
@MuggleMom; Tell your kiddo to not worry too much. Same thing happened with my D16.
Social studies teacher finished first so her LOR went to all the school listed on her Naviance list even though the Naviance request was to send to only certain schools. The science teacherās went in 2nd it went to all the remaining schools that had space for another LOR so that a school that D16 applied to for DPT received an LOR specifically addressing D16ās interest in majoring in Food Science. It messed up two school that only allowed one LOR and wanted it from a math or science teacher. It has not effected her admissions yet she was admitted to both schools, lol (although she did not apply to any Ivy, so I canāt speak to that situation. I imagine they are more sticklers on that kind of thing.) D16ās highest ranked schools are in the USNWR 60 - 70 range.
Naviance has proven to be more of a hinderance than a help for us. I will never understand the value of asking/submitting an LOR request to an individual teacher if the GC simply uploads the first available LOR received to ALL the schools. HS was adamant that the kids needed to send a separate request for each school to the teacher they wanted the LOR fromā¦
I hope that everything works out for your daughter.
We have another acceptance! This was one of the schools D found at the black college fair that so impressed her she went home and applied. Itās also the one which ācouldnāt findā her SAT scores. I guess the scores were foundā¦Even with no other merit money, the in-state tuition waiver (based on stats) would make this school cheaper than our own flagships, AND they get teaching students into education classes right away, AND itās near her paternal grandparentsā hometown. H said, āSomewhere, her grandparents are smilingā¦ā
Itās fascinating to see how different each school is for what they charge, what perks they give higher stats kids, what the residences and meal plans are like, and so on. In any case, no matter what else happens, she now has several choices where she believes sheāll be happy, and her favorite has not yet responded (weāre told mid-January, but who knows?).
I wonāt lie-D has not ever been a surly teen and I will be very sad to see her go. But of all three kids, sheās the one I knew would not stay close to home, though my son spent time in the service all over the world, so he wins for being the farthest away. This year seems to be flying by though, no matter how I look at it.
kudos to your D @sseamom
@sseamom Congrats! That sounds like a great acceptance. My son is similar. We had no major struggles and he has always been very driven at school so we just sit back and kind of marvel at it. And, heās always wanted to go to a big city, far away, for college. Closest we might get is Chicago. I will miss him terribly when he goes, but am pretty excited for him that his dream will be coming true.
Anyway, I have an older son in the Army and although he hasnāt traveled a ton - heās stationed in Colo Springs, we only see him twice a year.
Whatās it like to not have a surly teen?
@Ballerina016 I was going to suggest ice cream. It always works for me and something DS16 and I have done to decompress and spend time together .
Congrats to your daughter @sseamom .
Is this her first choice?
Ryan, my middle one did enough surly to make up for the other 2, and a few more to boot! Ages 16-20 were just awful. We sent her to counseling allegedly for HER, but I think itās the only reason we didnāt change the locks while she was outā¦
@carolinamom2boys Ice cream works for our family too! I generally like the idea of getting out of the house. DD somehow has very low self-confidence and I can see her blaming herself for not been good enough or smart enough.
@Ballerina016 Ice cream works well for my son because heās skinny as a rail and the Dr wants him to gain some weight, but me not so much.
@happymochi @GoodGrief16 Add another homeschooler to the Parentās thread. I thought I was the only one with another. Still working on remembering who is who. The earliest my son will hear back from a college is Dec 14 or 15.
My sons ED decision is supposed to be released a week from tonight, 5PM PST, so 8PM EST. At that time he will bbe performing at the opening night of his Christmas play. Itās his first time in a Musical AND he has to dance - and heās nervous enough about that without the college decision on top!
My S is only applying to 5 colleges. 2 EA apps are already in and he has 3 more to go which are due 1/1 and 1/15 that I wish he would just finish already! I am starting to feel really anxious even though there is no real reason as the deadlines are weeks away. He will know 12/15 on one of the EA schools. The other EA is our state flagship that only promises to notify by 1/15 (although some people at his HS have already heard). The 3 RD colleges he is applying to are small and selective (although a notch down from what folks on CC would consider ātop tierā) - I believe their USNWR rankings fall somewhere in the 30s and their acceptance rates are all about 30-35%. All consider interest and he visited each school twice (they are between 4 and 6 hours drives from us) and interviewed at all. Right now he does not have a favorite among them. His academic qualifications should put him at or above each schoolās 75% so we are hoping that things will work out. His ECs are a little light - varsity sport and club sport off season, in marching band/auditioned concert band, small amount of volunteer coaching, camp counselor but that is really about it. I tried very hard early in high school to encourage him to try some other activities but they just didnāt work out. He tried MUN and went to one conference but didnāt like it. He auditioned for another extremely competitive group/club at our HS that works on diversity issues but didnāt make it (and you can only start in 9th grade or if you are new to the District). Frankly, he wasnāt interested in more academic work outside school through a club as he has always taken a very rigorous course load of honors/advanced/AP classes and I donāt blame him. It has only been in recent months that he has even had any kind of clear idea what he might like to study in college (engineering). Ironically, we have always thought of him as strongest in math/science (writing has always been a struggle) but those are the subjects (trig and AP chem last year) where he got the only Bās so far in his HS career. I am freaking out a little but his GC (who is very experienced with selective college admissions) seems to think he should be accepted to all 5 colleges. We shall see.
@LKnomad ā You should check last yearās decision thread. A lot of schools put out their decisions a day or two early. Maybe make reservations for three nights in a row.
@AsleepAtTheWheel Actually the date came from the current SCEA thread for the school. Several students have called the admin office and were told the 10th from 5-5:30. This goes with the last 4 years when the results were given on a Thursday before the 15th.
Naive question here, but Iāve been wondering for weeks every time I see it mentioned here & on a homeschooling board - how are kids able to apply to so many schools EA at the same time? Is it just the Ivies that limit you to only one EA/ED/SCEA? My sonās applied to one Ivy SCEA, two RD, and RD to the state flagship school. Heās waiting on the SCEA decision before he applies to apply to more colleges.
Regarding on the topic of getting weird looks for your kid not wanting to apply the Big Name State School, we get that too. My son grudgingly agreed to apply (the only one we forced) because itās a match and heād get in-state tuition. Our sonās friends canāt understand why he wouldnāt want to go there. Itās like a given that youād want to. So, weāre helping him to find other in-state and OOS matches and safeties. If at all possible, he wonāt go to the Big Name State School.
Our only parent requirement is distance. We have to be able to drive there in less than a day should something bad happen and he needs us. We said, āJust give us a year. After that, youāre free to go anywhere.ā He understood completely. (Long story about some really bad things that happened to him last year that heās still recovering from.)
Lastly, Iām so grateful for the parents here mentioning the troubles theyāve had with GC and LoR. We were in a complete panic when our son got an email from his SCEA school saying they hadnāt received his second LoR. Heād asked for it multiple weeks in advance. So we scrambled and asked another non-parent teacher for one and gave her ways to submit it as only 2 were allowed to be assigned on the Common App. Good thing we did though as we reread the instructions for homeschoolers and the college prefers 3 LoR for students schooled this way.
@FarscapeFan yes, only a few schools, mostly Ivies, limit the EA options. My kid is one of those who has an SCEA not a regular EA. We have no acceptances and unless his SCEA comes through, he wonāt know anything until March.
EA is not binding (well I honestly donāt know about the SCEA option, but regular EA isnāt.). An admissions person said - ED is proposing marriage, EA is saying you want to date. Lol. My son applied to four EA. Three give decisions in Dec and one in January.
None of DDās EA schools announced decision day yet. So it can be between tomorrow until the end of the month.
