Snail mail finally caught up and DS16 received his official acceptance from the school he received an email from. No merit info yet, but based on the info sent , he meets all criteria to be considered for some.
S was accepted by his first choice school, but the scholarship wasnât enough to make an OOS school affordable. His other choice has as big automatic scholarship for NMSF, so unless something changes thatâs where heâll end up.
@mstomper I hope your son will be happy and successful no matter where he ends up.
Happy day! Another big scholarship arrived, just hours before planned trip to see that college. Coincidence? (I think so since it was mailed last week).
Iâm really feeling like the hours I put in to figure out schools that gave good merit is paying off. (I gave her a long list, she picked 10 schools from that.) But we must limit costs, and so far so good.
No acceptances here yet. Weâre not expecting any until just before Christmas. Dd has 4-7 applications still to go.
@momofzag until yesterday, Iâd never heard about school clubs being competitive to join! Is he at a large school? Seems very short-sighted on the schoolâs part.
At our school, everyone is welcome to experiment and participate in any club and most teams. My D didnât even do yearbook until sophomore year and now sheâs the editor. Other kids have switched freely between debate, MUN, mock trial etc. as their interests changed.
@FarscapeFan yep, my Dâs three EAs are not SCEA (single choice early action). So sheâs all in. Three EAs, two rolling and two RD, but with Dec. 1 deadlines for merit.
@LKnomad, regarding dinners for acceptances, no matter what happens, S will want Panda Express.
Congratulations to everyone on the acceptances and the big scholarship.
Congratulations on all the acceptances! It is great to see so many getting good news.
DS has rebounded since my last post. He did really well on a test that he was concerned about. Exams are still looming but they will not be as stressful with the quarter grade being strong.
May Santa come early to each of your homes with acceptances and stockings full of scholarship $$s!
@LKnomad, we planned to go out to dinner (although we didnât have tiered restaurants according to the decisionâI like that idea). This is what we did with DS13.
Like @Highbury, my DDâs REA decision will release a few hours before the night of her big fall performance. She needs to be at school all afternoon, so her choice is to find out at school or wait about 7 hours until after decisions. She is beside herself trying to decide. I am just excited to have the waiting over some time that evening, no matter which she chooses.
And congrats, @sseamom. Your daughter is a rockstar. :-*
@mstomper Iâm sorry that the merit wasnât enough to make your sonâs first choice doable.
@booajo congrats!
Itâs such a game. Ugh. I asked D what she wanted for the holidays. She said acceptance and a big fat scholarship to pay for it all.
I think (canât even keep it straight anymore) we will hear from two schools in a week or two and then two more in January. Sheâll complete 3 more apps over winter break and then we wait until March.
I was looking at a list of where kids from Dâs school were accepted and matriculated. While instate schools are popular, a good portion of students ended up spread out oos at LACâs.
great idea on the tiered choices for dinner out on decision day. I love it and will most likely steal itâŠI promise to give you all the credit!
Congrats to all recent acceptances and scholarships! Is everyone updating the acceptance thread? It will be fun to check out all the great news and see where the kids end up!
Thanks dyiu13 for the link to the draft FAFSA! I need to mentally prepare myself after Sundayâs stressful 3 1/2 emergency session with the CSS Profile. LOL.
D applied to 6 schools EA and 1 rolling, 5 RD so far and originally had 2 more RD to go but is now thinking about adding on two more. UGH. I think the original plan was fine but she is having second thoughts on schools she previously erased from her list. I think my conversation about the would haves, should haves or could haves may have went a bit too farâŠbecause now she is worried that she may regret not applying to X or Y school. I do not want to stifle her initiativeâŠBUTâŠwe naturally have to draw the line somewhere! We thought 14 was great now she wants 16? It doesnât help that her brother is egging her on (with additional really high reaches) as he is so proud of her accomplishments and is one of her staunches supportersâŠI love that they are a team and support each other BUTâŠreally 16 applicationsâŠHelp!
We have only the one great acceptance in hand from the rolling admission school. We have so many EA schools because I work in an accounting firm and have a very hellish âtax seasonâ from January 1 through April 15 (and I am the go to college tour personâŠhubby is very involved but driving many hours is not good for his back). Very hard to visit a lot of schools between April 1 and May 1 with taking care of so many tax filers needs the last 2 weeks before the 4/15 deadline for filing or extensions! It then takes us a full week to process all the last minute extensions (for the habitual procrastinators). That brings me to April 20 something. Not a lot of time to visit and help D make biggest informed decision to date. So I figured the more decisions we could get in hand in January the better off we would be. But I did not envision her feeling sheâs almost done with all this extra timeâŠlets add blah blah blah school!
That goes to my son. He will do anything to go out to eat, and knowing that we normally celebrate things wanted to make sure that he still got to go out if he didnât get an accept.
Just passed the deadline for college list set by DDâs school. Now it is impossible to change college list. DD met one of GC today to discuss her list last time. The GC think her private school list is a bit aggressive and told her that if sheâs fine to go to public school when all the private school option is shut down, the list is OK. GC also said her not to disappointed if sheâs deferred at EA choice. We know the odd is slim and I expect she probably told every student the same word. Anyway, DD used to say it would be better to go to public school instead of paying large money to do to a private school with small FA.
Anyway, she looks very stressed and went to bed as soon as come home. It will be a long senior year for her.
So sorry to hear your DD is distressed @nydad513! I hope that the GC is just over doing the of managing your DDâs expectations. I will be hoping for the very best fit for her and that she will be pleased with her options. I know that she will do well wherever she goes.
@mstomper is there no recourse on the scholarship or hope of additional money being added later? Perhaps there are special scholarships through the specific major at the college that require additional application? Could your son consider working after freshman year as RA? At my DSâs school that covered the cost of his room and board. I know there comes a time where you have to accept the way things are but perhaps there are still cards to be played.
@NYDad513 I hope she does not lose heart over her GCâs comments. Your daughter sounds like such a remarkable young woman I canât imagine she would fail to make her mark no matter where she lands.
@Cheeringsection @Themommymommy Thanks a lot for kind words.
I think one of GCâs job is lowering the kidsâ expectation. So she was doing what was expected. I also tried DD to exchange one school in her list with higher acceptance rate school about a month - not pushing with delicate words - but she was reluctant to do it. So, she decided.
I tried to extract out DDâs odd for acceptance of each school from scattergram on naviance with her stat. Calculation showed her chance to be shut out is low, ~3% range. I used pretty conservative numbers, so I donât expect much surprise. Anyway, from school point of view, 3% means if there are 30 students taking my DDâs position, one student will be shut out and obviously, school does not want it. So, I understand what GC said. Well⊠DD still has her several safety schools and it will be OK in the end.
Congrats on all acceptances @sseamom How wonderful. The fieldwork early on in education is great, and definitely not standard. If I get into to my top school, fieldwork starts in the first education class you take, 2nd semester first year
@themommymommy, his second choice is offering huge money. He was already wavering once we showed him that his 529 would cover 4 years at his second choice school with plenty left over.
