Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Good luck to your kids @AsleepAtTheWheel and @palm715 !

ā€œI hope to have the blessing of a life long enough to witness those very things fill my daughter’s lifeā€ā€“what a lovely wish, @Waiting2exhale! Me too. I have not read Red Leather Diary, but now I want to! I will look for it.

Good luck to everyone waiting for ED and EA decisions in the next few days!

I should hear in the mail hopefully this week if not then before the 15th. It’s a match but I still want to know!

@readingclaygirl. My D16 is in the same boat. He hears from a low match/safety by the 15th and should hear sometime between now and Jan 15 from his safety (the state flagship) that others have already received acceptances to. He ā€œshouldā€ get accepted to both but it’s nerve wracking! Meanwhile, he has three other applications to write supplements for, one of which he would like to submit by Dec 15. We’ll see…

It truly is. This school is my dream so I’m crossing my fingers. All signs (my GPA, test scores, what the admissions counselor has said) point to acceptance but I can’t be sure until I hold that letter in my hands. It’s any day now.

Good Luck to all waiting on acceptances! We are also waiting but I do not think any are supposed to be coming in the next week. Maybe we’ll be surprised.

Well, we are definitely done. She was deferred from ā€œTheā€ state flagship. She is, in her words, salty about it. She did not plan on attending but if her 28 ACT and 4.2 weighted GPA can’t get her in the pre-major who are they taking? She just wanted to go 4 for 4.

Wow. That’s surprising. @kandcsmom I’m glad she had some other good acceptances

@kandcsmom That is unfortunate that your D was deferred…we would be salty too! At least she has 3 good ones in hand. Its so strange to figure out on what basis colleges make their decisions. Best of Luck

In my fantasy world colleges/universities would have to tell candidates specifically why they were denied.

Rooting for your S & D @AsleepAtTheWheel and @palm715 !!

We should hear from one EA school this week and a reach EA next week. Then nothing for a while. S still has a bunch of RD apps to finish, including his top choice. He has finals for his CC class this week, and after that, no excuses!

He got excited about a postcard in yesterday’s mail . Thought it was a college update. I said, ā€œIt’s a reminder for your dental appointment on Friday.ā€ He said, ā€œOh, I should have known by the toothbrushes on the front.ā€

@labegg I like that idea! They should do that.

Waiting here for an ED (reach) that will be released Friday and an EA (super safety) that will come out next week. Next EA (match/high match/2nd choice) won’t come until January. DC will get the news Friday afternoon, then go to a gig (pit orchestra for a musical outside of school). Very busy with rehearsals and school this week so that’s probably a good thing. I think I’m obsessing more than DC is.

@kandcsmom sorry to hear about the deferral. Does your D currently have a favorite out of her 3 acceptances?

In the next two weeks, we should have a rolling, three EAs and another late discovery rolling. One of the EAs will probably be a deferral or outright denial. In a way I just want to get that over with! Anyone panicky that they’ve missed a good choice or done something wrong? I really wish I’d found CC sooner. It would’ve helped so much. Lesson learned!

@AnxietyAttack77 – The last line of your note reminded me of the following issue: Does one (as a parent) check the admissions portal for a decision before one’s child does?

S16 got the email yesterday regarding the ED decision being released earlier than had been originally stated. He didn’t tell me about it. I found out about it on the CC thread for the school. He told me, ā€œI DO NOT want you checking the decision before I do.ā€

For some kids this piece doesn’t matter at all. For some kids it does. I will admit here (I’m among friends) that for S14 I checked decisions before he did. I’d then tell him that I read on CC that decisions were out. Of course if it was a snail mail release I let him open the envelope. But as far as I can tell there’s no electronic trail that gives away the fact that you’ve checked before your child.

I’m not sure what I’ll do with S16’s (hopefully) only decision (ED). What about all of you? Do/Will you check before your kid? Do you do so even if you’ve been forbidden to do so?

My son wants me to check. I wouldn’t if he he specifically said not to, but I would tell him if I had read something on here that’s for sure!!

Haha @AsleepAtTheWheel! I checked D13’s acceptances since I was awake earlier than she was. Then I casually mentioned ā€œisn’t today the day you’ll hear?ā€ She was never any wiser. Still remind her of things that I learn via her college parent’s forum. She is a bit more on the ball now though! For D16, I will probably check. She hasn’t told me not to! Although her #1 choice is via mail only.

Good luck to all those waiting!

D hasn’t given me the user name and pw to check the portals. I never saw anything on her common app. All my info comes from CC. I’d been bugging her to check the portal for a financial safety with results I knew were available. When she let me know she got in, I asked if it mentioned the Honors Reception, which is the clue she got one of the two top scholarships. She asked, ā€œHow would you know that??!!ā€ Whoops.

@CAMidwestMom I wish I had found CC earlier too! I only stumbled upon CC last spring. Luckily, it was early enough to add to our list. Now when I mention CC to my family, I’m told that I’m obsessed and have a problem.
