Congrats to your daughter, @dyiu13 !! I hope everything works out for her, so she can go there…
@petrichor11, sorry to hear about the wait list.
Congrats to all of those with good news today.
My DS is very low key. At every college visit, I asked him if he wanted a shirt - or something. The answer was always no. At the same time, he has sweatshirts and T shirts from my alma mater, DH’s alma mater and DD’s alma mater. He wears them all. DS is applying to two of those three schools and continues to wear that college gear, although I don’t know how many of his friends know which schools DS is applying to. .He is pretty quiet about everything.
Congrats to your D @dyiu13! I really hope the job situation improves and she can dorm. If it shaves off those 2 years, I think it might work, though-all of D’s schools have much cheaper room and board than the tuition.
My response was the same @carolinamom2boys-my money (or at least some of it) means I get to know what’s going on. So the next response was, “Well, maybe since SSeadaughter is so young, she needs extra help…” Sigh.
Got word earlier that S finds out on Friday afternoon if he got into his EA school.
@mysonsdad. My S gets the word tomorrow at 2pm PST. Good luck to both of our sons.
Good luck @Mysonsdad and @LKnomad. DD will find out in a week.
@dyiu13, that is FANTASTIC news!! All of you must be thrilled.
Re: Facebook, the first acceptance was posted, because that’s kind of a cool milestone. The others haven’t been mentioned online, though I’m not above that. I just have a lot of other minutiae with which to bore my Facebook friends I guess there was a fair amount of photo documentation of the recent college visits.
@sseamom Sounds like the little green monster is running rampant around your daughter. Seriously , sounds like someone is very envious and insecure. On my son’s academic team, there is a boy who skipped over his sophomore year and is now a junior. He was able to accomplish this by taking a heavier load and some DE classes at the local community college. He is also highly ranked in the class. One of the other juniors felt the need to tell him that the only reason that he’s ranked that high is he skipped all of the " hard sophomore classes" DS16 being quite sarcastic at times, came to his defense and told the boy that said that" You do realize that he took all of those hard sophomore classes at college as a FRESHMAN at a COLLEGE , don’t you?" It’s unfortunate that this whole educational process has become so competitive with the students as well as their parents. I think many opportunities for students to have support and friendship from their peers has been lost. Clearly, this boy and your daughter exhibit more maturity than either of the peers that found it necessary to be snarky. My son’s standard response to snarky these days is " thanks for your concern although I’m not sure why it concerns you so much." " I’ll be sure to ask you for any help when I need it"
You’re daughter is very impressive . Don’t let snarky make her question her maturity or readiness for college. She’s got this.
@dyiu13 The full tuition scholarship is fantastic! Hoping her board won’t be much more expensive than having her at home and she can keep the loans relatively low. Remember you can reduce the car insurance if she is away at school.
@eastgrad @LKnomad - candles got finished fairly quickly here too, but thank-you notes were more of a process.
@CAMidwestMom at my house the only shirts S and I are wearing is for his EA school. We don’t want any bad karma. i figure my days of wearing these shirts are numbered, after tomorrow I will either have more shirts or not even the one I am wearing right now.
@readingclaygirl huge CONGRATULATIONS to you!!! And CONGRATUALTIONS to @petrichor11 and @lonetreegrad
@LKnomad, you post it on fb, so what if some consider it bragging, your kid worked hard for it. I may be in a different boat because, being a teacher I usually post the accomplishments of students from my school or that S grew up with. Best of luck to your S today. He is truly deserving of getting in.
@dyiu13, congratulations, that sounds like a tough decision. Where I live everything is at least 30 minute to an hour drive away, so here we wouldn’t think anything about having a kid live at home and driving an hour to school.
On another note, I have been on CC since S was in 6th grade, every year I would watch the decision threads as the results came in. I can’t believe it is now S turn. I thought it would never come.
Congrats to everyone who’s already heard good news from their EA schools and best of luck to those of you who are waiting anxiously to hear today, tomorrow and next week!
Re FB: I love reading and sharing pride in friends and family as they mark milestones. So, like @GoodGrief16 said- first acceptance, because that is a milestone. Acceptance by a “dream school”; decision to commit; move in days. Whatever feels like a significant milestone. But when parents go to the length of posting every acceptance, especially those that are clearly safeties, it smacks as more of a substitute for personal validation than parental pride.
That said, I love reading through the acceptance pages here, and sharing in all your family’s successes, even though most of the folks are strangers to me. But CC is a different beast than FB, and I think it’s about audience. Of course, that’s just my opinion.
As for tee-shirts at schools… that post by @AsleepAtTheWheel just has me confuzzled. It makes me sad in a way I can’t quite put my finger on. Should they avoid wearing concert tees to avoid hurting those who couldn’t go to see the band?
And congrats @dyiu13 , @readingclaygirl , @petrichor11 and @lonetreegrad !!!
Someone mentioned a book their D was reading. It involved a red notebook or diary and I think it was set in NYC? If this rings a bell to anyone, can you share the name of the book please? THANKS! ETA: Search worked better than I expected. Red Leather Diary.
@khidhala – My son goes to a small private high school, with a lot of over-achievers. Some of the parents are totally nuts, and put a lot of pressure on their kids. Many of them are sure that their kids are going to HYPS, even tho’ they’re not. The request not to wear college gear was simply an attempt to be sensitive to kids who are under A LOT of pressure in terms of college admissions, who don’t yet know their fate.
I’m ambivalent about it, but I do understand it.
One of my son’s teammates who graduated last year got into Brown ED. He wore Brown gear every day, starting with the day he got accepted. But he was a sort of in-your-face guy. Everyone survived.
Congrats to everyone who’s in. Fingers crossed for everyone who’s going to hear in the next week.
About 120 notes on this thread yesterday. At that pace we’ll double the 9K total in less than three months.
Good Luck to all waiting on EA decisions.
@AsleepAtTheWheel Our son’s school is somewhat similar, although it’s a small group in the Honors program that are more intense. I know one of his friends is under intense pressure to get into an Ivy League school. S says they actually don’t talk about it that much. I was kind of glad to hear it as they are under enough pressure already. I figure private school, they make the rules, we can take it or leave it.
Not to create any controversy here but the way most public school systems work around in Texas, community college classes are considered a lower tier than AP classes. Our school district has advanced, college prep and AP. College prep classes get credit from local community colleges but are not considered as rigorous as AP classes in the same school.
That is the impression that I have always gotten too. Our district has AP, Honors/Pre-AP, and CC Dual Credit and Early Enrollment. According to the GC the dual credit/early enrollment classes are directed at capturing lower income/high risk students to get them invested in a college education and because it is the most cost efficient method. When we were considering AP or dual credit for D16 we decided that AP was the better choice because she was not planning on staying in state and receiving credit for a dual credit class at a OOS school/LAC was not practical. GC definitely directed D16 to the AP and Honors/Pre-AP route.
I’ve always heard AP classes are weighted higher due them having standardized exams at the end . I’m not sure if that’s accurate or not, but it makes sense to me.
