My S14 was a huge Barney fan n two of his first words were green n purple. He is also on the spectrum so that may help explain his choice of first words. D16 loved Blues Clues, Dora n The Wggles. I knew I was spending too much to time watching TV with my kids when the mail came at work one day n I broke out instantly in song “…here’s the mail it never fails…” Coworkers were hysterical! It took me a long time to live that down or when I would unconsciously just start humming the “muffin man” Lol.
S12’'s favorite show hands down was Thomas the Tank Engine. We not only watched it on TV, but had all the videos. Some of the songs from that show still pop into my head periodically! D16, on the spectrum, was obsessed with Angelina Ballerina for many years. She had all the books and watched all the shows and knew them by heart. When the kids were a little older, they both loved SpongeBob Squarepants. Oh, and we sang the “Clean Up” song from Barney for a long time.
Zaboomafoo, Sesame Street, The Wiggles, Caillou, Blue Clues, Oswald, Dragon Tales, Dora, The Fairly Odd Parents, Kim Possible, Dexters Laboratory… I could go on and on.
@NYDad513, I am so happy your daughter got good news today! U Mich is a great school!!
So glad to hear all the good news! I hope everyone gets at least a bit soon.
DS loved Dexter, Oswald, Calliou, Cyberchase but was obsessed with anything that involved Elmo or Buzz light year. He also was very in to superheros of all kinds for a long time. I still have his capes. :ar!
I liked Higgleytown Heros, Little Einsteins, Wiggles, Bear in the Big Blue House, Bearinstain Bears, Oswald, Dragon Tales, Zoom and Zaboomafoo. I don’t think any of those shows are even on anymore. Myself and your kids, we lived in a different era. Where there were highly coveted Nitendo DS’s not IPads.
Bear in the Big Blue House, Thomas the Tank Engine and Sesame Street.
Thomas the Tank Engine! We even went to one of those events where they had the life size trains. I still remember it like it just happened. Also Toy Story. It was fun to see Toy Story 3 in the movie theater as a family. I felt like my kids were growing up and so was Andy.
Good news, @BeeDAre ! I was wondering how he was doing.
And congratulations on UM, @NYDad513 ! The first acceptance is such a relief! I think S’s news about UChicago would have been a lot harder to take without knowing BC was a good, solid option and already in his pocket.
Yes.
I told S yesterday “sometime we need to sit down and strategize what you’ll do from here-- but not today or tomorrow.” He immediately went in his room for a marathon session on XBox. But at dinner later he actually asked, “so where else do you think I should apply?” Sometimes they just need space.
Re: children’s programming:
Bear! S loved Bear in the Big Blue House. I think Treelo was his spirit animal.
Yes, Thomas! And Kipper, Liberty’s Kids, Between the Lions (Mr Petrichor was “Silent E” for Halloween one year, which the kids thought was hilarious and everyone else thought was…odd) and a bit later, Zoom! (I hated Dragon Tales and thought the two headed dragon was creepy. And Caillou still makes me itch.) But the real hero of their childhoods was Mr. Rogers. The man was baby Valium. Every family with more than one child should be issued a full collection of Mr. Rogers dvds, because he was the only surefire cure for the Arsenic Hour.
My son was all Blues Clues all the time. He even dressed up as Steve for Halloween and we had a picture some of him in the Blue skidoo pose.
D, with two acceptances under her belt, is withdrawing an application already submitted to a well-known women’s college, and crossing two other very selective schools off her list. I’m actually glad she is doing this. And she said, I don’t need any acceptance trophies bc I’ll only be able to attend one school anyway. So this means that she has one more application left and she will be done. So grateful, as this whole process is unbelievably stressful, anxiety provoking and time consuming.
Great news @BeeDAre So glad your husband is doing better. Weighing in on cartoons . DS16 loved Teletubbies, Barney , Bear in the Big Blue House and House and Winnie the Pooh, and when he got older Kim Possible and Sponge Bob. He’d have a fit if he knew I shared this with everyone. He still is partial to redheads. The quote I put in his yearbook is a Winnie the Pooh reference . DS19 LOVED The Wiggles and Thomas the Tank. I guess all of our children negate the belief that TV " dumbs down children" Or if that’s the truth, imagine the geniuses we’d all be raising.
What an awesome attitude she has, @carlson2 !
D loved most of the shows mentioned, but I don’t think anyone mentioned Arthur!
Feel out of the loop–D16 didn’t watch tv much at all. She just wasn’t interested. Now, she watches some on Netflix, but we only watch Downton Abbey on TV.
I’m going to ask my S16 what shows he cherishes. He certainly watched Teletubbies, Blues Clues, Zoboomafoo, Kratt’s Creatures, Crocodile Hunter (at one point, S14 wanted to move to Australia and I secretly hoped one of them would marry Bindi), Bill Nye the Science Guy. I am not sure how much of these S16 cared about, as S14 and I probably determined the playlist, and they didn’t really watch a huge amount. S16 still gives me a hard time for having a Barney-free house (I found it insipid) and tells me I might have been depriving them of something special.
From a very early age S16 watched Seinfeld religiously and repeatedly. He still does.
Our first dog was named Cosmo. Our current dog is named Kramer.
A supplemental essay that S16 wrote (but ended up not using when he applied ED elsewhere) was for one of those “Design a course that’s not currently offered and write a course description” prompts. His seminar was titled “Our Inner Seinfeld: The Universal Desire to Live Amorally”. The opening line was, “Life imitates Seinfeld.”
@carolinamom2boys because S is at a small school there is not a wide variety of choices for classes. We have 10 AP classes (unless you are a native Spanish speaker, then there are 12) and only about 8 Honors classes. The top students all take the same classes and the gpa’s go well beyond the hundredth place, school uses ten-thousandths place so the race is very tight. In junior year all the students except S took a non-Honors math class and S took an AP class which put S in Val position and the others for Sal, so if they have the same classes and they all had A’s they would have been Salutatorians. The fact that 3 or 4 of the students got their first B’s ever yesterday shocks me.
@NYDad513, congratulations on UM. No matter what happens in RD your DD has a WONDERFUL place to go I would love for S to apply there, but their aid makes it unaffordable for us.
@BeeDAre, good for your daughter, so nice that she is happy with her choices.
@4kids2graduate, S school held an “End of the first semester dance” last night. I was great to see the kids unwind. As the kids say, “It was lit.”
@labegg, I will give you a hint…“Can we build it! yes we can!”
Uh oh, we are on page 666 on this thread…
Congrats @NYDad513 UMich is a great school! So happy to hear your news @BeeDAre it puts everything back into proper perspective at this crazy (academic) time, reminds us what is truly important.
Hmmm, the harkening back to childhood TV shows is a nice light touch to the thread too, DD was all Blues Clues until Steve left, though Dora was a close second.
Waiting to hear today about the last of DD’s EA schools, Case Western, decisions are supposed to be posted within the hour. It is a financial reach for us, so it is in her outer ring of ‘don’t get your hopes up too high for enough merit’ even though we all really liked it.
The one thing DD has not done, and admittedly she was very busy getting all of her apps and essays in early for rolling or EA, was to apply for any outside scholarships that might have bridged the gap for some or her financial reaches. I think she just might be essayed out, but she hasn’t submitted a single scholarship application anywhere but to a school she applied to. At this point it looks like that won’t be an issue thanks to some of the schools and offers she already has, but it might have broadened her choices with her financial reach schools being more realistic.
Family is going to see Star Wars today! Woo hoo, happy Saturday, everyone! (-:
