@palm715 Congrats on the acceptances and we are with you in the Northeastern deferral crew. That seems like a massive group to be honest, although I suppose CC is a small sampling. I would also be up for some enhanced coffee!
Add a Case Western acceptance for S16 today as wellâŠwas a bit worried on that one since acceptance rate is less than 40% and they want kids to show strong interest (and S missed that âmemoâ and didnât show any interest).
@palm715 - you reminded me of the years when S was playing soccer in a rec league, up and on the field at 8am on Saturdays for games up in Portland. I remember one particular game where 3 of us moms huddled together under a space blanket, passing a thermos of Baileys & coffee back and forth. Hey, it saved us then, and this isnât any less crazy now, right?
Itâs a bit crass, I suppose, but âcrapshootâ is the term of the month around here. Sâ last EA will report next week. Itâs almost certainly an accept with minimal merit - they accept in the high 70% of applicants, but he didnât jump through the hoops (two campus visits - would involve flights, many more essays) for the honors program. They may well decline him, figuring itâs purely a safety app and not one heâll take. Crapshoot. OH - and that notification arrives on Christmas Eve! Fa la la la la? (Weâll be traveling and will pick it up later.)
Notification on Christmas Eve is just not right!
Canât think of a better description, crass or not.
@2manybooks Iâve been using âcrapshootâ a lot on other threads. It is certainly most appropriate. Just when you think a student is in the âsweet zoneâ of a schoolâs profile, they get deferred or outright rejected. Itâs frustrating.
Crapshoot misses the mark, because when you shoot craps you know your exact odds for every possible outcome on every roll. Here, oneâs rolling the dice with no clear fix on the odds of success for any individual applicant.
Hugs to you @petrichor11 and @Undercovermom1! Itâs so disappointing, and I hope things turn around soon.
Good for your D @NYDad513! We also got the UMich good news, right before sundown and no electronics for us (Jewish sabbath) so we had a while to just talk about it. Iâm glad your D will have something to think about happily as she does so many RD apps!
Congrats @dcplanner! That is incredibly impressive with the merit aid!
@BeeDAre - so glad to hear about being home from the hospital. You have been in our thoughts!
Yay Congrats @4kids2graduate <:-P
@readingclaygirl Thanks so much! Secretly hoping there may be extra FA somehow so S could actually afford to attend! We will see!
Congrats @4kids2graduate !!
DD also received her acceptance to Case, nicest acceptance letter she has received since they personalize them, nice touch that made her smile. Even with the generous merit award in the letter it is still a major financial reach for us under current circumstances, but it will stay on her list until the end I think, no pun intended, but just in case.
S appreciated the note at the end referencing his involvement and leadership with his HS robotics team (by name) and saying the CWRU robotics club would be lucky to have himâŠdefinitely a nice personal touch! Still not affordable, but we will seeâŠ
@Skates76 Congrats <:-P My acceptance letter from Russell Safe College was personalized, there is a paragraph about my essay which includes my favorite line " You faced extreme adversity and because of it you have thrived." The personalization just makes you feel special and like a person not a number.
@readingclaygirl - that is wonderful, and exactly why you liked Russell Sage, right?
@4kids2graduate - Nice job to your S! Perhaps you can also appeal the award if it is his first choice!
Good luck tomorrow@carolinamom2boys ! I had to chuckle at your comment about the effects of TV watching on our DC. That is exactly what I thought when the topic came up in the first place. TV was just once strategy we used to keep DS busy. Downtime was not his thing until the teen years hit.
Congratulations to those with acceptances and great news on scholarships. Keep those deferrals in perspective. I think a deferral just means you are still dating but a ring is still a possibility. Either party can still walk away if it isnât a good match.
Anybody else out there a fan of Treasure Planet? DS insists it is one of the best animated movies ever. He was not a Mr Rogers fan. Far to little action for his ever active self.
@fretfulmother I missed the UMich acceptance earlier, congrats on that!
Treasure Plant was an enjoyable flick, not sure if it ranks as a classic for our family, but to each their own (-:
@Skates76 - thank you! Weâre not optimistic that there would be enough OOS financial aid, but it is worth a try!! My mother went there and loved it, and UMI is awesome in both Math/Engineering and Classics, i.e. DSâs interests
UMich FA is not good for OOS when I checked NPC and I am not optimistic either if they will give enough.
Wowza it is so hard to keep up with this wonderfully active thread! Congratulations to all on acceptances to UMich, Case and others. I have to go back and read to get the rest of the news.
D accepted to UMass Amherst today! This one is a top contender as we have been reading about the Food Science program today and their rankings. Looks really good. Invited to Honors College and $10K a year. A little bit more than in-state, but not too bad. We shall see!
Congrats @cakeisgreat! Your statements, I do believe. (there were some suspicious âI heard from U MA todayâ one-post-ever types as well) Where are you guys located?
