My son also gets out in early May and one school he is seriously considering starts mid-Sept. That will be a long summer for sure, but hey more time to save money!
S graduates in late May. Early May is very early.
@Mysonsdad you might want to double check on summer classes after the 12th grade information. Unless your son already took a lot of DE classes I believe the maximum allowed is 30 units. After 30, he will be considered a transfer student. But it might be different for different universities so you would need to check each universityâs policy.
I just called Drexel to find out why my Dâs EA application had not been acted on and found out that when they didnât get her SATs on time (remember my College Board saga?) they moved her to RD. So no acceptances so far. At this moment, I detest CB with every fiber of my being.
We are looking at a short summer. D gets out in June, then will probably have to go to an orientation session depending on the school she chooses. Its a little concerning that many schools start orientation sessions before she even gets out of school so the earlier sessions wonât work for her. Iâve heard that its better to get the earlier sessions because its easier to get the classes you want but she canât. Then some of the schools start their programs early to mid August so she is looking at maybe only a 6 wk summer break.
@AnxietyAttack77 I donât blame you. That is a Huge bummer.
S is only in the process for taking his first DE class starting in Spring. He will only have 5 DE units.
That is why I was telling @dyiu13 to check. When I was talking to GC we were in a conversation about UCâs. As you know, I have received so much conflicting advice regarding college admissions.
@AnxietyAttack77 Oh no! I completely understand why youâd detest College Board! I wonder how many kids have been affected in the same way as yours?
DD is 17, will turn 18 a few days after graduating in Spring. She had her driving permit for about 9 months before finally passing the test. She is a good driver, an excellent one for her age and experience level, would complete the parallel parking part of the test with ease, but was so relieved at doing that she twice failed on the very next and very simple maneuver. She also managed to experience her first accident when she was driving from a pair of school visits to a short vacation near the end of summer and we were rear ended in heavy traffic on the interstate. Only the car had anything more than a bit of soreness and she did a fabulous job of carefully pulling the car out of the travel lanes and turning on her hazard lights, before breaking down into a crying, sobbing mess. The accident wasnât her fault at all, but my biggest concern was how nervous she would be about getting behind the wheel again (I drove the crunched car away after the insurance was shared with the other driver, etc).
It took her about a week to get back into the swing of driving again and not being a bit paranoid whenever someone was behind her. Must have been an omen because she is not considering either of those schools anymore (-:
No major summer plans at this point, and now I realize that we havenât really talked about her graduation gift at all after hearing all of the plans and ideas here. Hmmm?
@AnxietyAttack77 I totally feel your frustration with College Board. How can such an incompetent organization play such a big role in something as important as college admissions is beyond me.
My D is interested in Cal Poly SLO. I saw their 4 yr graduation rate was surprisingly low at 37% (college data.com). My D will be studying biology with interest in dentistry. Does anyone on this thread have kids in SLO or know of kids that go there that know why this is? I have my theories but curious what is reality. If my D gets accepted (RD) we plan on visiting to find out directly from them what the deal is but, I am just trying to gather as much info at this stage.
@SeattleMom1, what is their 6 year graduation rate? Does it say? Being an engineering school SLO may just take kids longer to finish.
S graduates at the end of May. We still have to figure out what heâs doing for the summer - would love for him to find a job. We are planning a family trip together sometime at the end of June/July - I would love to do a scandinavian cruise, the rest of them want to hike Machu Pichu. We have to finalize plans this weekend when everyone is home.
@SeattleMom1 My DD applied to SLO RD since they have a strong engineering program and instate. I did not research much about this school yet, since it is not at the top of her list as of now, so I donât know about 4 years graduation rate. I know that they get about 70% of their student body during ED, so it is very competitive RD. Please share what you will learn.
So sorry to hear about the move to regular decision at Drexel!
DS will be 18
At graduation in late May, but not long before.
The summer calendar is already getting full here but no firm plans for a family trip can be made until he picks a school. The potential Orientation dates are all over the board. We plan to let him pick the destination for either this trip or Christmas Break 2016 since that will allow lots of options. He may go on a quick trip with âthe guysâ very near to graduation. I figure we only have 2-3 summers until we are right back into the college search process. DH does have a business trip to an awesome location in Jan 2017 that DD and I will be tagging along so there be lots of traveling going on at this time next year.
@Mysonsdad @Ballerina016 SLOâs 6 yr graduation rate is 75% (colleges.startclass.com) so pretty comparable to others but a little low (Santa Clara 85%, U of WA 80%, UC San Diego 85%). From another thread I read, they talked about difficulty getting classes which one parent said his kid would put together a flow chart prior to registration in case he couldnât get his first couple of options (domino effect). Also they do have a policy of not changing majors until after the first quarter is completed (http://www.academicprograms.calpoly.edu/content/academicpolicies/policies-undergrad/change-major) and they have a high percentage of engineering students. I figure all this comes into play? But still, 37% is really low for me to feel comfortable with since we are out of state and my D is interested in going to dental school.
I too hate the CB. The same thing happened to D with one of her schools-the SAT scores took forever to arrive, so she ended up in the RD pile. Luckily it was still well before the deadline in March and they called D last week to say a decision will arrivei n mid-January (in the process of checking some other info). It just kills me that two ânon-profitâ companies control ALL the testing for ALL students applying to colleges that are not test-optional. I wish the colleges would push back on this, but they seem wedded to the process.
H and I are talking about a road trip around whichever state D ends up after dropping her off, but that may depend on where she goes. One of them is literally in the middle of nowhere so a road trip wouldnât make sense. Any of the DC or VA area schools would be cool thought. Neither of us have spent much time in that are at all.
@SeattleMom1 It has probably something to do with school of engineering. I just checked UCB, and they have 72% rate for school of engineering.
Re Drexel: there is an upside to the delay. D had missed the deadline for the Honors application (never got the email) and now she can add it to her file. Still mad, though.
@Ballerina016 Berkeleyâs 72% rate is for 4 yr graduation rate (collegedata.com). SLOâs is 37% for 4 yr and 75% for 6 yr. so still a huge difference compared to other schools.
