Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@Mysonsdad what we have found is each school is different. Some require both FAFSA and CSS Profile - some FAFSA only. More selective the college usually requires both.

Congratulations to everyone with shiny new acceptances, and welcome to the new posters! I wish I could be more organised and mention people by name, but it’s been a whirlwind 24 hours, with surprise out-of-town guests. (A good surprise, I hasten to add but necessitating changes of routine!)

S managed to fire off one of his last RD applications yesterday so only two more to go. And he’s scheduled for an interview next Monday afternoon with a school that is rising to the top of the pile (and is not a lottery school, so yay for that).

Yes, absolutely! No birthdays, thank God, but the whole holiday season has this sort of
Ghosts of Deferral and Waitlist Present and Possible Rejection Future thing hanging over it. Even with the acceptances, which carry details to be dealt with of their own.

I’ve dealt with it via retail therapy. Hopefully the Ghost of Visa will be the only one still hanging around come March.

Just booked a flight for D16 to visit, on her own, a school that she has been accepted to but we hadn’t visited yet, over MLK weekend
Hadn’t thought she was seriously considering this school as it is small and definitely not urban. She asked yesterday if she could visit.

This is the first school she will visit “alone” and her decision to leave it on or take it off the list will be entirely in her hands. I haven’t been on this particular campus in 25 years and I suspect that it is nothing like it was 25 years ago.

@Mysonsdad I agree with @sophomore1. You have to check each school to see what they require. Also
all should keep in mind that some schools want the FAFSA for scholarship purposes even if you do not think you will qualify for any need based aid.

@carolinamom2boys I agree that for some the holidays are totally overshadowed by this process. We are fortunate that DS only has 2 scholarship applications to complete over break. He could still be invited to apply for honors at a school but that will not come until later. Some of that scheduling was pure luck but some was also by design. I know my child and I anticipate major senioritis once first semester grades are reported.

@AsleepAtTheWheel. Thank you! That was exactly what I was looking for. Looks like all but two of DS’s decisions will arrive the last 10 or 12 days of March. Hope it is mostly good news so I can have a happy birthday!

@carolinamom2boys I hear you with the college process totally overshadowing the holidays
I am grateful that D16 is my last because this process is grueling for all involved. I am thankful again for being a part of this thread because I am reminded to go on and get my and my D’s FAFSA IDs before the rush
You guys always keep me on top of things when life bogs me down with all its inherent incidentals.

Excuse my ignorance . FAFSA rookie here. Passwords?

Now you have to get a FAFSA ID and a password I believe (since May I think). More hoops to jump through
UGH

@lvmjac1 Just go on the website?

Thanks so much @AsleepAtTheWheel for that link to the admission notification dates
that is really helpful!

Thanks for the breakdowns on the acceptance thread. Very cool!!

@carolinamom2boys yes go on the website and start a new FAFSA it will prompt you to make the FAFSA ID (and I think a password too). here is the link that explains it https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa/filling-out/fsaid

Not a 2016 parent, but wanted to chime in that if you have instate schools and might qualify for state aid, list the instate schools on top of FAFSA.

Student needs FSA ID and one parent. Set those up ahead of filing FAFSA.

Do you set up a new FAFSA ID for a younger child even if you already had one for an older one? Sorry, I know I can look this up you all are equally, if not more, reliable than Google!!

We used PIN last year. They changed it in May. Each student will need their own FSA ID (and email), and one parent will need a FSA ID. When I set up mine it asked me for my PIN. My D has to sign up for the new FSA ID as well.
I wrote all of our info down in a safe place.

Yes, each student needs their own FAFSA ID I believe.

Oh wise parents who have done this before
Do both parents need an ID
(married, filed jointly, living together) or just one? Couldn’t find this one the site.

Just one parent. I deal with the financial stuff so I got the ID.
