Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@lvmjac1 Congrats!!! <:-P As I told @NYDad513 whose D was also accepted there, I have 2 friends who are going there.

Thanks she is very happy tonight!

@carolinamom2boys…my hubby and I just said the same thing to ourselves…LOL) We would be thrilled if she joined her brother bc then we’d definitely be southward ho like we want to be! Just love your neck of the woods!

@lvmjac1 congratulations
We have had a few Princeton acceptances on here, a few Clemson’s, and now two Binghamton’s, I wonder if your kids are ever going to meet.

Congrats to all those with acceptances today and welcome new friends. Happy to share this wild ride with you.

Just read an interesting phrase: ā€œThis is the year of the great deferralā€.

Congrats on all the new acceptances! <:-P

My S spent hours today working on his essays for his #1 school. Almost done! I will be so relieved when he hits that submit button. Till then, I’m wrapping gifts and eating dark chocolate!

I’m avoiding wrapping one final box. One. It has been staring at me for the last hour and a half.

Can I have some chocolate, @happymochi?

S16 was looking at CA supplements again for a couple of apps due in early January. He ā€œdiscoveredā€ on one of those supplements that the school requires an official copy of first quarter grades by January 1st. What??? We are just discovering this on Dec. 21st - yikes! This is our first encounter with a supplement that required more than additional short answers and/or essay(s).

Needless to say, school is closed for the holidays so a somewhat frantic call was made to the district office with the hope they might be open this week. A very helpful lady there printed out a first quarter transcript and mailed it off for S.

Don’t ever let me complain again about the limitations of a small school district - today we are just so grateful for the small town, personal touch and the ā€œhappy to helpā€ attitude!

@NYDad513 , congrats to her, and it will be a long wait indeed!!

Welcome to all that have joined us. We have discussed much so I highly recommend the search thread function. If that does not help, feel free to ask. This group has learned a lot together.

Congratulations to all that have already received some great holiday gifts in the form of acceptances or deferrals. Just think of that deferral as the sweater you would love if it were just a different color. I hope you get to exchange it soon!

For those still waiting or that received disappointing news, remember that the holidays can be a magical time no matter what else is going on in your world. Try to soak that up. Enjoy your friends and family. Go do something fun. Make that special food or start a whole new tradition to remember this year by. I wish you all true holiday joy, regardless of the source.

Congrats to all those acceptances just received!

Does anyone feel like the whole college application process is like the Grinch who stole Christmas ? Our whole holiday season including Nov birthdays has seemed to have been derailed by the EA process, supplemental materials and essays. I’ve been trying very hard to make this a memorable holiday season for DS16, but the application process has sucked all the energy out of the room. I’m just looking forward to taking a breather before the chaos of FAFSA and CSS profile.

Yes congratulations to all those who got good news!! And welcome to our new members.

I am a first time parent in this college thing. My son applied all EA to 8 schools, heard back from 4; 2 acceptances (PSU, UGA) and 2 deferrals (UChicago, UMichigan). Waiting to hear back from Ga Tech, UT Austin, UIUC, UC Berkeley.
Since FAFSA is just around the corner, we already requested FAFSA IDs, one for me and one for my son.

My question is: do we include ALL schools even the ones deferred? Also, I have read a few articles that it may matter (the amount of $$$ each school will offer) how your list the names of colleges, alphabetically or first and second choices…is that true? One article even suggested listing your top choice of school 2nd. I am confused…
I hope some of you can help me clear that up. Thanks!

@sunbeams Yes, include all schools including deferred. The order listed on FAFSA used to be viewable by all colleges, with much speculation that colleges used that information for admissions decisions and discretionary financial aid offers. Beginning this cycle that will no longer be the case for the most part. See #3 in article below:

@4kids2graduate Thank you so much for the link! Very helpful! Will list ALL schools with State college being first!

My DS has an email account just for the college process that I monitor for him (I’m hoping to change that soon). Anyway, he just got this email from William & Mary. Thought you would all enjoy it. It ends with ā€œHappy Holidays and Good Luck!ā€

Twas days before the deadline, when all through the house,
Not a sound could be heard, save the click of a mouse.
App after app and form after form,
For high school seniors this is truly the norm.

As the applicants slept all snug in their beds,
It was visions of thick envelopes that danced in their heads.
It was ma and dad who all the distractions hid,
As they nagged about deadlines, ad nauseam they did.

On transcripts, on standardized tests, on recs, on resumes,
And for goodness sake what to write for those essays?
To the College Board, to the guidance office, to collect all your stuff,
Man this college application process sure can be tough.

But this process is not for naught, the value is real,
The four years you spend in college will be almost surreal.
The books you will read, and the classes you will take,
Will be amazing, not to mention the friends you will make.

Admission officers are anxious, with files a plenty
To get to the reading, and to complete the Class of 2020.
So keep up the momentum all you seniors out there,
And we’ll read all your apps, we will, we swear.

Keep typing, keep editing, keep writing away,
As all of your hard work will hopefully dividends pay.
The deadline is approaching, so keep your desk lamp lit,
For there’s nothing quite like finally clicking submit.

A question. A week or two ago I saw a thread somewhere else on the Forum that listed 2013 and 2014 RD dates by school. I apparently forgot to bookmark it and now I can’t find it. If anyone has it bookmarked, can you please share the link? Thanks.

Another FAFSA question: We made one FAFSA ID for dad and one for D16, but none for mom (married to dad). Does mom need a FAFSA ID too?

I have a question, do we send both FAFSA and CSS information to colleges? Or can we just send one or the other?
