Personally, I much preferred the human cadavers to the animals.
@RyanG1207 What other majors has your D18 expressed interest in? How are her grades? Has she taken the ACT or SAT yet? A handful of the summer programs we researched had automatic scholarships if your stats were really good.
@ospreycv22 no new season yet. I just started from season 1.
@4kids2graduate She hasnāt taken the SAT or ACT yet, but she probably has a 3.9UW GPA. I used to think she would be more interested in marketing or design since she is the most creative minded in the household and was an avid sewer and designer from the ages of 9-13, but it all changed once she got to HS. Iām trying to get her to explore finance, statistics, STEM and other healthcare careers.
@sseamom congratulations to your daughter. I know she is going to love the teaching profession, letās hope that aid comes through. S has been having dreams that he gets rejected from everywhere, so to cheer him up I reminded him that he has already been accepted to CC.
@Undercovermom1, @LKnomad, S is going crazy with writing apps. He canāt wait for it to be over. Just a few more days.
@RyanG1207 (I just noticed there is a Ryan Getzlaf on here. He plays for the Anaheim Ducks which is a minor league hockey team here in So. Cal) my daughter is an EMT and works in two ERās. The stories she tells are incredible. Btw, all stories are told within HPPA guidelines.
As a science teacher I have dissected almost everything under the sun from squid to humans. I love it.
@RyanG1207 There are quite a few programs at colleges and universitiesā¦you can google and also do a search on each individual colleges website. There were some threads on CC for summer programs, but those tended to focus more on the very tippy top elite programs. Our criteria was free or fairly inexpensive since we would also have to factor in airfare and a few other expenses (dorm bedding, etc.).
There are some short intro to engineering style programs at Auburn, UAHuntsville, UA and a quite a few other colleges that we found, and some of those are in the 600-700 dollar range - but with options for scholarships.
Also, Ole Miss has a big summer program (SCHS - summer college for high schoolers). The Ole Miss program has several areas of interest, and each of those programs has a two class curriculum for credit in that areaā¦health professions, pre-pharmacy, STEM, humanities, honors, and many others to choose from. The students do fun social events during the evenings and weekends. In addition, there were a few options for research instead of course work there, including concussion research with the football team and high tech helmets, and research in biochemistry and solar cells, etc. I think there were a few more options. Their program (both the research and the credit course option) was approx. $2000 for a month (includes room and board), but if ACT or SAT scores are within certain ranges, they give scholarships for 1000, 1500, or full ride. On their website they have a chart with their scholarship options.
Just spend some time searching, and you should find some summer programs for all interests and all price ranges. My S gained some independence and experience, and also discovered in his AP Bio class this fall there were a few things he already knew because of his biochem research experience!
The last application-- ironically one of his top choices, but it has a lot of essays-- is finished. The very last school fell off his list because he is so done, and asked āMom, why am I applying here again?ā
Not a good sign.
And a cautionary tale for any lurking '17 or '18 parents: donāt send scores or CSS before the application is actually done. I think Iām out about $100 on schools that are not happening.
@petrichor11 I also sent some scores and had transcripts sent that were not needed. Definitely a lesson learned. In fact, I would say in general, safeties are necessary of course, but I wouldāve put a couple with rolling acceptances on the back burner since they are basically irrelevant after the first round of EA decisions are in.
Congrats to your son for getting his last ap done @petrichor11 . Thanks for the advice about the CSS profile too. I need to get in it. One school requires it and itās due Jan 12.

@RyanG1207, if you are in PA, these are some of the ones our GC mentioned
Yay for your S finishing his last app! @petrichor11 Saw my same aged cousin yesterday and while he has one acceptance he still has to finish applications for 2 other schools due Jan 1st. I couldnāt imagine waiting that long. Lol
Thank you, @4kids2graduate and @mommdc ! We are in NJ, but all the programs sound amazing. I just need to get my D in the right mindset to look at all the info Iāve sent her.
@Mysonsdad The stories can be really fascinating! I always wait up for my S to come home after his shift so I can hear if anything interesting happened that night.
On an unrelated note, any Packers fans here? I know zero about football, but my friendās son was just signed to the Packers as the long snapper so Iām trying to show my support by watching the game even though I donāt really know whatās happening.
D attended the Girlsā Adventures in Mathematics, Engineering, & Sciences (GAMES) camp held at UIUC before her junior year.

She wasnāt really interested in engineering, but she wanted to see what UIUC was like since it was a school that she considered applying (our state flagship school). She also wanted to see what it was like living in a college dorm. It wasnāt too expensive so I thought it was worth it. She got her app in too late for the bioengineering track but UIUC offered her the electrical engineering one.
D did another camp after her junior year and this one was at Northwestern. It was somewhat pricey though. She picked the Insight Into Medicine INFOCUS Seminar.
http://sps.northwestern.edu/program-areas/summer/high-school-programs/college-preparation-program/
Northwestern was one of the schools she was going to apply to so I thought it was good for her to spend the 2 weeks on campus. It was a good program and she met a bunch of new friends. Two of them got into NU and one to Hopkins in the ED round.
Again, we used both summer programs as a college visit opportunity and gave her a chance to have some freedom.
Thanks, @ChicagoSportsFn. My BIL went to UIUC and lives in Hinsdale so a program in IL could be combined with a visit.
@petrichor11 it sounds like our kids are applying to the same, too many essays, school. Did this one also have a ridiculous $90 app fee?
As DD is trying to finish her last applications she also asks if she is aiming too high. She had a conversation yesterday with someone who used to work in admission for one of the top schools and the person told her that engineering major is extremely competitive now and people who get in sold their apps to Google or did something of this caliber. After two deferrals in an early round it seems to be true.
I told her that at least she has an acceptance to the school of engineering at her safety already. It is not a bad school and it is in state.
No, just the usual $70-80ish. Which is enough of a hit to the budget- I refuse to add up what Iāve spent thus far on the college application cycle.
@Ballerina016 : engineering is a tough one! Luck to your daughter from the mom of a non-engineering early round deferee.
Those are really expensive app fees! Iāve heard of my friends paying 50 or 60 but 80, 90! Thatās just absurd! My mom lucked out-the schools my sister and I applied to were either free applications or had fee waivers. I can only imagine @petrichor11 especially with twins.
We were lucky enough to have waivers for every application. Iām sure it gets quite costly when applying to quite a few schools.
We did end up sending scores to a couple extra places, but I saw it as sympathetic magic.
