Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Huge Congrats to your D @sseamom !!! <:-P Hoping she gets the merit aid she needs.

Congrats to you daughter @sseamom =D> . She’s definitely earned it. Hopefully she gets whatever she needs to attend one of her top choices.

Ok, what is HBCU? Is there a list of abbreviations somewhere in the forum?

Congrats @sseamom and I hope you feel better soon @Undercovermom1 !

S seems to be dragging out the last essay. Sigh.

@CAMidwestMom HBCUs are historically black colleges and universities

@CAMidwestMom HBCU = Historically Black Colleges and Universities. I had to look it up the 1st time I saw the acronym.

My son is busy reviewing for the state EMT certification exam which he is taking Tuesday night. It’s been 4 months since he took the class so there’s a lot of material to go over.

And trying to get D18 to at least look at the info I’ve found on summer programs for her. I think she must auto delete my emails. :-/

D’s goal for the rest of her Christmas break is to knock out the essays for two local scholarships. She also has to do essays for a College of Arts and Sciences-specific and a University-wide scholarship for the school she will be going to this fall.

Other than that, things are pretty much in cruise control.

@GoodGrief16 My S has traditionally been one to work on homework, projects, etc. as early as possible. This college application season has been the opposite, with procrastination and writer’s block being the two major themes. So happy your D finished her requirements for RD apps so early…lamenting S did not do the same!

@RyanG1207 regarding the summer program subject, S16 was initially opposed to the idea last year. He ended up going to two programs across the country (one was free and the other was almost free). It allowed him to experience traveling alone, be on his own on college campuses and to experience some interesting programs as well. He needed to be pushed to apply initially …but he enjoyed the experiences. It also helped his comfort level with applying to colleges all over the country this year!

2 more essays here. One for a competitive merit scholarship and one for a departmental scholarship. After all of these essays DS16 should consider English or Journalism for a major. Good practice though. One of his interview weekends has a writing component as part of the decision process.

S is pretty much just waiting for official notification on an automatic NMSF scholarship. When people ask him where he’s going he says it’s almost definitely University Mississippi. He seems excited about it.

Congrats to @Skates76’s D and to her dad! Congrats to @sseamom (I feel like I should make that a default of every post given your D’s great results! )

Good luck to your S, @RyanG1207! What a terrific certification to have.

One more confirmation that @LKnomad is a smart mom: ice cream therapy at its best.

We also had a white Christmas, with more snow accumulation on the day itself. Envying my family on the East Coast!

Feel better, @Undercovermom1! Good therapy plan.

Good luck to all those working on applications, essays, and scholarships.

Hosted a big party last night with lots of college-aged kids so no alcohol. Even so, wiping up lots of stickiness this morning. Since we’re done with all our holiday entertaining, I’m finding the cleaning very therapeutic.

@4kids2graduate Free and almost free summer programs sound great! What were the programs? D18 went to U of Maryland last summer for kinesiology because she had some interest in PT, but she learned somewhere that PT students had to work on cadavers and she changed her mind. So we are back to trying to help her find a path that interests her.

Thanks @EastGrad !

@EastGrad Envying you for a white Christmas- one of the few green Christmases we have had here in Upstate NY. Christmas Eve felt more like Easter!

Congratulations to everyone. I’ve been off for a few days and can’t believe how fast this thread moves. D has been invited to interview for an LLC that she is very interested in at one of her schools. That’s all we have going on. She has decided not to do any RD applications so she is done with that. It’s a slow lazy vacation week for her.

@readingclaygirl: in theory, I like a white Christmas. In practice, I have shoveled a lot of snow. I have a couple of blisters to prove it. But we need the water, so (in theory) I am grateful.

Enjoy this last holiday while you are living at home with your DParents. I am projecting here, but I feel sure they will miss you next year!

I had my first college application season dream last night, woke up and couldn’t get back to sleep! It’s so stressful with the different deadlines, merit awards qualifications, timing of the awards and deadlines to respond. Everything is so much in the air! Yesterday’s top school is one of the jewels of HBCU’s and it’s a lot stricter with and protective of freshmen, which we ALL like seeing how young D is. And the academics are excellent (D also though the boys were extra cute, lol). I think my anxiety dream came from wanting her to be able to go there if that’s her desire.

@EastGrad Oh I sure will miss them and I’m happy I will only be 45 minutes away @me29034 How wonderful for your daughter! I hope she gets in. @sseamom Several of my friends mentioned the cuteness factor of guys when they talked about various tours. Then they asked me “oh it’s a women’s college. But if you want boys you can just go up the hill to (well known in area coed college)” " but you didn’t see how cute they were!" Lol and we are a very down to earth, nerdy bunch.

@RyanG1207 FYI, many PT schools have moved away from cadavers unless they are affiliated with a medical school. If she truly wants PT, look into specific programs. Not my favorite class, but I survived.

@carolinamom2boys That’s good to know! How would I be able to tell by looking at a PT curriculum whether cadavers are involved? Or is this something I just need to ask directly?

I would call the schools and ask how their gross anatomy is taught. Some use models , others used computer based training. Cadavers are expensive so many schools have begun using other methods. You may want to see if the schools that she’s interested in have course catalogs online ; you may be able to find out there. That being said, she will probably have to do dissection on cats or other small mammals in lower level anatomy classes, so if she’s squeamish , she needs to take that into consideration.
