@carolinamom2boys, @CAMidwestMom sometimes people put two deposits because they are still waiting to see who offers the better financial aid package. It is considered unethical. I had a student several years ago who put a deposit down for SDSU and the next day her top ranked school told her she had been accepted. Another student was transferring from cc to a UC, just days before she was about to put her deposit for UC, her dream school offered her acceptance, but the money wasn’t as good as UC was offering her. So she had less than 48 hours to make the hardest decision of her life. Perhaps in these situations a student may put down 2 deposits to buy time. I am not saying it’s right.
@Mysonsdad Thanks for clarifying . My big concern is the threat of withdrawing any merit aid offered , so we will only be submitting one deposit at a time after a much thought out process.
Yikes!! Coming back here where people are civil and supportive. :-S
@Cheeringsection “Yikes!! Coming back here where people are civil and supportive.”
There there. He called his own son “sorry and lazy.” You are just an inadvertent casualty in his war.
Thanks @OspreyCV22. I feel for his family.
Holy cats! What conversation was that?
The one about the reforms in a NJ school district dividing the community. Do not mistake it for a genuine exchange of ideas…
Anyone else feeling like the rest of life is on hold pending your DC’s decision? I usually start dreaming\making spring and summer travel plans now but feel I cannot until accepted student visit and orientation dates are known. My DH has some business travel in June that could be a fun one to tag along. I have no idea if that will work out. I was asked to lead something at the office that I cannot commit to because it conflicts with parent orientation and move in at one school. I am SO glad he is unlikely to need until April to decide.
@Cheeringsection This is our position exactly. We usually go on vacation in July, as soon as school gets out (my son won’t get out until late June, D graduates in early June). But I can’t plan anything until I know where D is going and when her orientation session is. Both her top contenders have orientation sessions through June and into the summer. I have two business trips in June and ideally I would love for her orientation to be mid June between my two trips. But, until she decides and we can get this scheduled, the rest of our life is up in the air. I usually plan vacations way ahead of time. This year I guess we will be going for last minute deals.
@Cheeringsection and @me29034 yep, waiting to make plans is annoying me too. We are trying to plan spring break trip, but a few places have second looks around then. And I don’t think we’ll even have all decisions in yet so just stuck.
Agree with not making plans until I know where my D will end up. Right now all I have planned is an accepted students’ event in April. If D gets in anywhere else, there will likely be other similar events to go to. I am trying to plan ahead for orientation and move-in as well.
Just made reservations for my son’s graduation trip to Disney the second week in June. We go back to school mid August , so we’re out the first week in June. We never do spring break trips, so I don’t need to worry.
My S will be in Spain for spring break with the marching band. It is last week of March. So that may be when he hears about his 3 RD applications. If he is accepted to all, it will be a mad rush in April to re-visit and make a decision.
Can’t make any summer plans either without knowing college orientation dates and whether D18 will be attending any summer programs. We want to take a nice family vacation this year since we never really go on big trips and we want to celebrate graduation and a milestone anniversary.
I would like to put our passports to use, but the kids’ passports expire in September and won’t be valid for most (all?) places due to the close expiry. I don’t want to renew them before S16’s 18th birthday in early June because I want him to have an adult passport.
We never vacation so we don’t need to plan that. But it would be nice to know if/when summer orientation is for job planning purposes(I’m planning to get my first job this summer). And I want to know when move in is- they posted when classes start but not when new students move in. Really hoping it doesn’t conflict with my sister’s.
@RyanG1207 renew all but S16’s now and then pay the expedited fee in June. The process should not take more than 3 weeks and can be as little as 48 hours if you use a service. Of course, I am assuming the passports are US. if not, please disregard.
Thanks, @Cheeringsection. They are US passports. I’m considering that. I just found out that if we go to NYC, we can get them the same or next day.
Feeling the no planning pain here too. My son is decided unless one of the very low odds schools come through at the last minute so I could theoretically plan for admitted students weekend but as soon as I make plane reservations one of the low odds will come through Still need to take D17 to the same city as where S16 will probably go so if he doesn’t we would just waste 2 plane tickets not 4. One of the low odds is drivable but not fun so DH and son could do that. I guess I could book on SW since they allow changes to tickets…
Most of D’s schools have orientation right before the start of school, so we’ll be needing to drop her off anytime after the first of August, depending on her choice of school. We don’t usually vacation-D has spent her summers in special programs or on trips that are related to education. That’s when H and I usually go out of town. I don’t get lots of time off, so we don’t travel during spring or winter breaks. The real angst is over whether she’ll be visiting any of the schools she has not yet seen and whether we can make it happen with the year-long demands of her senior project not being impacted.
I also am facing PTO planning issues. My employer requires all employees to be out of the office for 7 consecutive calendar days each year (the joys of working in the financial industry - it’s a regulator’s requirement) - and my manager also has her eldest in the class of 2016. We may both be taking our “week” to move kids into college - now the question is if we’ll be gone at the same time. Depending on where S1 ends up, I could be looking at a 3 hour drive or a 3 hour flight to move him to his new school.
(And then I get to do it all again in 2017, when S2 starts college…)
