Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Welcome, @EskiesAndBoys !

S is tentatively supposed to head to Europe this summer for a musical competition. We won’t know if it clashes with orientation dates until we know which orientation he’s going to, which we will not know until April now that he’s been deferred from one of his top schools (and has RD apps in at several others). He has to pay fees to be part of the competition, fees which are at least in part non-refundable. Kind of like all those bloody deposits the safety school wants…
I need to hit the lottery. And/or acquire a time travelling police box.

Meanwhile, I know now why we never got results from D’s EA app to one of her schools. The transcript never made it! And since she lost her pin, we had no way of checking.
Fortunately, everything else is in, and they’ll take the transcript with the semester report when school starts back up.
Please excuse me as I go bang my head against this brick wall.

@petrichor11 that time traveling police box has been known to deliver a lottery ticket from time to time… One could hope.

@petrichor11 That’s awful. So sorry for your D. The whole point of EA is knowing sooner and now she has to wait even longer. How are the transcripts at your school sent?

I know where D is going and I’m still trying to piece together all the dates she needs to be on campus before school starts. I’m kind of floored by all the traveling this is going to take, it’s a 6+ hour drive each way.

D needs to be at OU for her Audition Day 1/29 (this will be a very rushed trip because she has UIL competition the next day). Flying is not an option because she wants to bring her own instrument for the audition. I had originally thought she could squeeze in her audition when we where there on 2/15 but it turns out she might be eligible for a small music scholarship based on the audition but only if she auditions before 2/1

We’ll be back two weeks later for an NM event on 2/14. This is optional and not required but we both really want to attend and it will be DS18’s first college visit.

Return some time in May for advisement and registration. Depending on dates she may fly out for this one or drive up on her own.

July there’s an optional 3 day orientation camp if she gets the camp counselor job in MA this summer she’ll have to fly for this one.

Dorm Move in and Orientation in mid August just before classes start.

@RyanG1207 16 and 17 year olds get an adult passport. You can renew your S16 now.

@3scoutsmom could she fly one-way back to Texas on 1/29, and you drive down with the instrument? Or does she basically need to travel with the instrument since she needs it for the competition on 1/30 (not familiar with UIL, so I don’t know if it is music-related).

@bouders Thanks! I didn’t know that. That’s great! D18 will be 16 in May so she’ll be able to get an adult one too.

Very exciting reading all these threads. My DC applied to UC’s and has 7 RD applications about to go in, so I am in a time warp compared to all of you who have acceptances and are trying to ferret out Merit to finalize decisions.

I know this is a bit lazy of me, but could someone (@East??) post the link to the acceptances list? It is so hard to keep track of everyone’s good fortune!

Here you go, @ItsJustSchool :

@RyanG1207 - thank you for the welcome. I’ll admit to having ā€œhung outā€ for a couple of months now…

@petrichor11 and @LKnomad - I think I would very much like to have that traveling police box handy for moving into dorms next summer. Much easier than multiple trips up crowded elevators and stairwells. (We did try convincing S1 that dorm rooms truly were ā€œbigger on the insideā€ once you get them arranged, but he’s not buying it.)

UGH really annoyed here!!! My son just received an email from the UC system asking him for verification of a part of his application. From what I understand this can happen with ECs or awards but my son was asked to verify his personal statement!!! WHAT??

His personal statement discusses an incident where, many years ago, his science fair project was NOT a part of his school’s science fair because the school lost it. There is an detailed story that went with this situation, but I am annoyed because the school is asking him to verify his participation in his school’s science fair!!! His personal statement was about NOT participating in the science fair. ERRRRRRGGGGG.

Bangs head on wall…

@LKnomad What a pain. Will you be able to verify it with his school ?

So, I stepped away for a few days, and I had almost 200 comments to catch-up on. It was great reading all the good news and learning from all the thoughtful observations! I appreciate the kindness and support here. This group and their kids feel like folks I’d love to have over for a BBQ.

D has plenty of applications left to do, including some lottery schools I’d prefer she not apply to, but not so much so that I’ve said no. I’m really afraid heartbreak is in her future. Her safeties, which are my greatest interest, are not on her radar. She has said more than once she understands our financial constraints, but some of her off-hand comments tell a different story. She has older friends home for the holidays that attend some of her ā€œdreamā€ schools filling her head with all how amazing their experience is to the point our boring ā€œreal lifeā€ can’t compete. The future is a great big question mark that I feel zero ability to manage successfully. Overall, our relationship feels less and less simpatico, and I’m jealous of those to seem to be more in-step with their kids.

Ok, sorry, enough pity party from me! Maybe I should have stayed away longer considering my downer mood! Happy New Year & thanks for all the smiles! Won’t it be weird to start writing 2016? It has been it my head for so long as my D’s graduation year and suddenly it’s here!

@carolinamom2boys The incident went viral - it was a number of years back. The science fair project was not really lost, it was ā€œlostā€. So we actually have online proof of the entire mess with dates and times and several hundred blog comments. He also still has the poster board because, ā€œcoincidentallyā€, the day AFTER the science fair, the project mysteriously showed up! He does not want to think about it now, but he could do screen shots as well as links. At the same time, the principal at the time (who I believe had nothing to do with the project getting ā€œlostā€) is now retired and a FB friend so I can ask him for a letter. What a mess.

I hope it works out @LKnomad . What a pain. Was this email from particular UC or from UC system?

@Ballerina016 The UC system.

@readingclaygirl The school should have sent it, but now D tells me she has a copy (in a sealed envelope) that ā€œI don’t know where it came fromā€-- so I’m sending it out tomorrow from the main post office. It’ll mean an hour or so driving in morning rush hour, but at least it will be postmarked before the 1st.

@EskiesAndBoys I sure hope S’s dorm room is bigger on the inside! He’ll have a tough time fitting his clotheshorse self into one room, otherwise.

@palm715 Just hugs, and libation of choice. There have been plenty of times I’ve felt S is really not hearing me on various school-related subjects (especially financial aid). And if I want D to hear anything, someone else has to tell her.

@LKnomad: what a pain! Thank God for blogs. And what a story behind it!

@LKnomad, that’s the kind of thing that makes me crazy (and worried that the apps aren’t being carefully read!)

@palm715, someday she will be nostalgic for that ā€œboringā€ childhood in Hawaii! Isn’t it funny how the grass is always greener!
