Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

In between my hunger pains (in response to the yummy menu planning)…I was wondering if anyone here is familiar with University of Tulsa, or may know students who have attended there?

@4kids2graduate I know of two girls who are there now. I think one is a sophomore and one is a freshman. I can contact the parents if you have specific questions.

I’m nominating @carolinamom2boys to bring actual Carolina barbecue to this virtual feast. (Vinegar based pulled pork…mmm…though if you must, I’ll settle for low country mustard base).
I’ve got sweet tea and chocolate cake-- and some 25 year old Macallan I’ll trade for a good guacamole.

On the subject of essays: the “why us?” essays were the hardest at first, but S has gotten the hang of them. Just in time to have written his last one.

I really wish this were a real barbecue now.

@CAMidwestMom my S did some preliminary research on them and did apply…but we need to be efficient in choosing which schools are a priority to visit since we cannot visit all. Hoping to hear some insider insight, or a UTulsa parent perspective…I feel that is sometimes helpful to round out the research on schools. My S seems to know more about most of the other schools he is applying to than he knows about Tulsa for some reason.

A new wrinkle while we were at the beach: in-laws offered to pay enough to allow S to attend first choice school. He’d gotten a little better than half tuition, but that wasn’t going to be enough. I guess they figured they can’t take it with them.

@petrichor11, I’d much prefer the Carolina BBQ, but I’d settle for the mustard based sauce if necessary.

@4kids2graduate Would you like me to ask my friend with the sophomore how she’s liked it so far and maybe how she decided? I know she had a lot of options. Her Mom was my S18’s teacher in middle school and is super nice. I know she wouldn’t mind sharing.

@mstomper Wow…that adds a new layer to the decision making process for your son! He was probably just getting used to the fact he would not need winter boots or a parka!

@CAMidwestMom That would be helpful, so yes please! My son liked the idea that it is a smaller school with an in-house engineering program (approx. 4000 undergrads)…but it is bigger than most of the LACs (and most of those don’t have engineering programs). I would also be interested in their take on FA opportunities at Tulsa.

New wrinkle for sure! @mstomper That’s very generous for sure! My paternal grandfather on the other hand cannot comprehend why my sister is going to a culinary school and pulled away his graduation gift of a laptop for her! (He promised us that back in 8th grade-something for all 4 grandkids). Thankfully after some tense conversation my dad convinced him otherwise. But it still hurt my sister.

@petrichor11: Okay, not even gonna look up Macallan- sounds like scotch, so I’m gonna go with that. (I want some!)

I’m also going to push for ‘beyond virtual’ because you sound like you know what you’re doing.

On the subject of essays: Such a treat to read sometimes! I can really tell when this one has pushed past the prompt as external stimulus, and connected with the actual opportunity to communicate something new. At those times I figure she has heard something whisper to her, “Dig deep, young one, dig deep. Now, reveal.”

Enjoy this time.

@mstomper That’s awesome! I would love to be able to do that for one of my grand kids someday!

@4kids2graduate, he seldom wears more than a hoodie and Keens in DC, so I doubt he’ll wear more than that in Philly. @readingclaygirl, if someone has the aptitude for culinary school that’s great. Probably not that many people do.

It’ll be easier having him a couple of hours away for sure.

Last application for 2015 is in. Two more to go. One is due on 1/3 and another on 1/5.

I cannot stand your culinary discussion any more. All sounds delicious. We will have an entire family over tonight. I can contribute an Olivie salad to your virtual feast. In a best Eastern European traditions, no New Year celebration can be completed without one.

@Ballerina016 I don’t know exactly what that is, but by the name, I’m VERY interested in that salad!

@Ballerina016 I had to google Olivier Salad to learn what it was…and it sounds really good! Do they always have dill pickles in the recipe?

@LKnomad : There was no speculation on my part of what prompt your son had responded to, just pulling from the idea of prompts in general, and with no particular slant to my comment. Whatever the subject, or essay prompt, there is the possibility for an unexpected and opposite reaction to the ideas being delved into and developed throughout the essay.

Sorry if that appeared to suggest I thought such of your child.

In a world where it was possible for someone to reach beyond ideas of wit as being snide or too-cheeky-for-this-context, I would think your son’s proposed and discarded encapsulation of the moment and the subsequent follow-up for verification quite winning.

@readingclaygirl: Oh, no!

@4kids2graduate Yes, it is mandatory part of the recipe .
@CAMidwestMom Virtually sending your way!

Oh, @readingclaygirl, give your sister a hug from me. And a frown thrown in the direction of grandpa.

I am very pleased that I invited everyone over…to someone else’s house. This virtual feast sounds better and better.
