I think both your child and one parent should get their FSA IDs. Your child uses her/his ID to complete the FAFSA (actually you end up doing it since they donât know the numbers!) and then you use your ID to sign/finalize their application. We did ours on Jan 1st and it took about 2 hours since we ended up doing our estimated taxes using the last pay stub as well.
Hi All, Happy New Year! I have been absent for a few days and have missed more than 20 pages of posts (which may take some time to get caught up on). I am sorry that I missed so much but it was unavoidable and unfortunately not pleasant.
Welcome to the new members of this thread, Super Congrats to all good news received in my absence and Hugs and sweet indulgences to those that may have received unexpected or less than happy news.
D had her first alumni interview at one of her super reaches this morning! We have been exhausted with family drama / difficulties that have prevented me from even the most limited internet activity, so on the upside there has been little time for her to obsess and worry about it. Thankfully, S14 is still home (hubby is driving him back to Tiger Town tomorrow morning) to help her deal with her nerves. He has been super supportive of her throughout this entire process. Thankfully also that the alumni interviewer seemed like a very easy going person from their initial telephone conversation and therefore her 9:00 am interview time went wonderfully. D said it was an enjoyable and very easy going interview and the interviewer said that if it was up to him, she would be in! Fingers crossed that the ad coms find her application shows enough merit to convince them that D is worth attending. After speaking to the interviewer about his experience there, this school (which she has not visited yet) has moved very high up on her list!
Good luck to your daughter @lvmjac1 . I hope things turn around for you.
Welcome @bookmom7 !!!
With the more, ahem, âaggressiveâ posters on CC, I find that many have knowledge that as a newbie I found to be invaluable, though I also quickly learned that many, and really there arenât that many of them, have real agendas that seem to draw them to threads either to advocate for or against, whether it is acting like the major recruiter for a certain school, or attacking another school or way of thinking. I find it somewhat humorous that some of the posters in question are the first to chomp down on any thread about how colleges limit diverse viewpoints through over political correctness or a slant to the left or right, while they are the ones who love to do the very same thing on CC in the name of their won cause or ideology. Ah, as someone said, must be the post-holiday/FAFSA blues making them so grumpy, and at least we all have this lovely haven of support and sanityâŠwell, I might be exaggerating the sanity part at least for the next few months, but it is quite enjoyable to lose our minds together (-:
@lvmjac1 That sounds like a great interview experience, and it is very true that all interviews are really two way streets, glad your D felt she did well, and equally glad that the interviewer re[resented their school so well to her! Good luck!
Thanks @carolinamom2boys! D is now very excited and hopeful! I too hope things turn around soon with some of the extended family drama / difficulties! Thankfully immediate family is all good as are most of the our extended family. Just a select few relatives are being ridiculous about recent perceived issues. It just caused a few days of discord and exhaustion through the holidaysâŠnothing that we will allow to get us down going further.
@lvmjac1 While both my parents and my husbandâs parents are deceased, we still have our share of family drama and misperceptions. Heâs the only boy with 5 sisters. That means I have 5 sister in laws, need I saw more?
No you donât @carolinamom2boys !
Being that we are talking about FAFSA, I have a question also. When figuring out income do you use the net pay or gross pay. I used net pay and as it turns out, my income is very, very close to last year. All-in-all, my accountant said he would do an estimate of my taxes, but if I could save the drive if would be easier.
Thanks @Skates76! He really did represent the school very well and seemed to understand how to relate to pre-college students.
@Mysonsdad Net pay. My income is very close to last year too. I used the last paystub and last yearâs W2 and did the same calculations using the new numbers. I ended up using the net pay.
@carolinamom2boys you have absolutely hit the nail on the head! We have so much going on and to look forward to we are not letting this needless melodrama bring us down. Another chance to give Kudos to this thread where all are happy and positive about our successful moments and understanding and supportive of our not so successful moments. Many family members just do not get it or do not want to get it. Makes for a lot of unnecessary tension.
Did you all hear the loud screaming and then a big THUD?!!!
That was us screaming as my son hit the submit button at 11:25 pm tonight on his 15th and final app! The THUD was me crashing over the finish line! Please excuse me while I crawl to bed, exhausted but smiling.
Iâll be back tomorrow to catch up on the hundreds of posts Iâve missed! I just had to share our triumphant moment with you all! <:-P
Yay for those final applications going in! Itâs a good thing I stayed up late to read CC-an email came through tonight after 10:30 announcing that school was delayed 2 hours tomorrow. We got about 2 inches of snow-thatâs like an apocalypse here. But what if Iâd gone to bed? H and D were long since asleep. What happened to the text alerts??
Feeling a bit put outâŠa mom in my online momâs group was worrying about her Dâs high test scores but low grades, and discussion turned to colleges. I shared our strategy and success without going after brand name schools (some believe that is their best and only option for low-cost college) and was basically told, âWe donât care.â Well, ok.
Itâs not the difference in college strategy that bugs me, itâs the âWe donât care.â Sheesh. Iâve been talking with these women for almost 20 years. I guess weâre not as close as I thought!
Night all-I get to unexpectedly sleep in tomorrow-the last weekday in awhile, I suspect.
Congratulations to @happymochi and any others completing applications. I have no idea if my DS finished those last 2 scholarship applications or not. I got tired of being told he had it under control and stopped asking. These last two are comparatively small and would replace our requirement that he have a part-time campus job since both have a service component. I am leaving it up to him.
Welcome @bookmom7 and any others that have joined the thread. Always room for a few more at the 5/1 BBQ.
Good luck to all expecting news in January. May it make the time between now and 5/1 much less stressful!
Doing laundry this AMâŠ
One thing I will miss! DS16 made me a âpopsicle stick swordâ when he was a little boy in that phase, to reach where I canât get all the lint out otherwise.
One thing I will not miss! DS16 had a random cache of dirty laundry that appeared about twenty minutes after Iâd started the last load.
Welcome @bookmom7!
@sseamom - crazy re the snow day!! Itâs getting into a cold snap here, and I mused that itâs now the time of year when I can shop for any groceries I feel like on the way to work, and use the trunk as a refrigerator/freezer all day. Oh joy.
@happymochi Congrats on S hitting the final submit button and you crashing the finish line! From my own experience, I know how comforting it is to know that milestone is finally DONE. D also submitted 15 applications and the day she hit the final submit was monumental. She has one scholarship app that she needs to complete an was witching to me last night that she is done but I told her this is the last hurdle and she promised she would get this all done if she could do it her wayâŠthis timetable was her way so a promise is a promise and I am holding her to it.
@sseamom sorry your online momâs group were unappreciative of your inputâŠthe response you received was terrible but playing the devils advocate cardâŠmaybe they were too wrapped up in their situation to hear the caring through the wordsâŠjust maybeâŠI try to give each situation a mulligan or do over before letting the negative effect totally take me over.
Hi @Cheeringsection, I missed the discussion on the 5/1 BBQ (because of family drama)âŠI would imagine it is a virtual eventâŠis it an open inviteâŠLOL?
Yes, @lvmjac1 the BBQ is virtual and open to all. Several have already volunteered what they will bring. I am sure it is going to be quite a party!
