re: homework… our schools are changing over to “grading for learning” which bases grades only on demonstrated knowledge and competency. Homework assignments don’t count. D’s math and science teachers all use this approach- performance on tests is the only determinant of final course grades. However, part of this grading philosophy is that students get a chance to re-test as competency develops, so if you screw up a test- you do some additional work and studying- then have an opportunity to re-test. My D loves this approach-- she decides if the practice problems will help her or not. But it’s quite a challenge for the kids who have always relied on homework grades to bring up their course grade.
@ChicagoSportsFn LOL. That is a great idea but unfortunately, I already changed mine.
@DAPIStained My condolences on the discovery. The other day I posted something about my S16 on FB (he’s not on FB himself). I am friends with one of his friends, who sent a screenshot of my post to my son. Luckily it wasn’t too embarassing. He knows I’m on CC and I’ve shown him some of my posts. He’s come to terms with it.
@LKnomad My S got only leadership. We didn’t apply for FA.
welcome @dapistained :-"
@lknomad D only received leadership. I looked at the webpage out of curiosity and the other two scholarships both had a financial need component.
@crowlady Thanks. I don’t think DD tries actively to find my postings but I would like not to be found.
An interview season for my DD just started. She applied 7 RD schools and 6 interviews plus NSLI-y and CBYX interviews in a few weeks.
With all of the talk about email usage by our DC’s this week, I found it amusing that D16 was more perplexed by using snail mail than she is by some of her AP courses. Her last known (and hopefully truly last) honor/scholarship application had to be completed on paper and mailed in, not emailed or submitted electronically. It ended up being several pages plus some attachments, more than typical one stamp postage and she wanted to mail it in a larger envelope so that she didn’t have to fold it and make it look ‘messy’. The look on her face was priceless when I told her she should take it to the actual post office to have them determine the proper postage (I had offered just to toss a bunch of stamps on there, but she didn’t like that idea, thrifty gal that she is).
I just checked with her yesterday and to my slight surprise she had already gone out and gotten it done, despite the deadline not really looming yet. She is now post office proficient, just another small step towards independence (-:
Thanks for your help on the acceptances thread @crowlady! I put them up twice and neither stuck but yours seems to still be there.
@oneundecided Curious about this new method of grading, when they retest is it the same test?
no…that’s the part the teachers are unhappy with… they come up with a different version for each re-test; and they typically schedule the retakes before/after school or during lunch/free period. And… if your score decreases you are stuck with the most recent score.
I changed mine pretty quickly into the process. My son used to roll his eyes a lot about CC, but he has realized that I have a lot of good info from it now. I doubt he would go looking for my posts, but he could pretty easily figure me out if he wanted.
My son could find me in a second since this is my common user name online. He also knows I am here. He has his own user name but doesn’t post much. He pretty much used the SAT and AP forums and said I am not allowed to post on the thread where seniors give their final results. He said he is planning to do that.
I don’t think DD is stalking me or digging into what I wrote. But she talked about few CC posts which I read too.
@Skates76 I too had to explain the snail mail concept to my kids and had to emphasize that for important must be there by a certain deadline mailings they need to get tracking put on the envelope.
My D knows I am here but isn’t interested in reading anything. When someone offers information that might be helpful, though, I do pass it on.
With all the snafus we’ve encountered with things getting to their destinations on time, D has become proficient in snail mail, screen shots sent via email, faxing and copying. Yesterday she was in her school’s office and one of the kids needed something copied that was not just a quick B & W one and done. The administrative assistant was busy with a parent, so asked D to just do it for them. I have a postage scale at work, so for larger envelopes, I’ve brought them here to check on the weight. Our local post office always has a line out the door.
Welcom @DAPIStained ! ;))
Whew, I’ve finally caught up on posts while waiting for my D at the dentist. Welcome to the new folks! Congratulations on acceptances! Hugs to those who are frustrated/disappointed/discovered.
My S also received the Berkeley alumni scholarship email, but not the other one.
I got a kick out of the discussion on phone & email aversion. A couple years ago, my S and I were on a 3-way phone call with a friend. I was upstairs on one phone, and my S was downstairs on another phone. At one point, our friend asked him a question. I could hear him from upstairs and it seemed he was speaking normally, but over the phone his voice was very faint. I went to the top of the stairs and called out to him, “Hey, are you talking? We can barely hear you!”
A pause. Then, we both heard him say sheepishly, “Oh…umm…I was speaking into the wrong end of the phone!”
=))
Just when I thought I was out… S decided to reactivate his App to our state flagship, so I sent the SAT scores the other day. Yesterday it said they were sent. Wow, was I surprised. I thought maybe since the 11/1 rush was over, things were moving faster. Silly me. Now it’s back to pending. At least I learned my lesson before and checked again. They seriously need a technology upgrade.
Oh no, FAFSA conundrum! :((
We were told to submit FAFSA to S’s first 10 schools, especially paying attention to list state schools first. Wait to receive word that it was processed, then go back in, delete schools, and resubmit with remaining schools. We did everything as advised. Smooth sailing, or so we thought.
This morning, my S and I did a sweep through every school’s portal just in case we missed anything. One school’s portal says that the FAFSA was “not received.” Strange, I thought…wasn’t that one of the schools in the first batch? Checked notes, yes it was. Read a concerning post on the Fin Aid forum, then placed a phone call to FAFSA (talking into the right side of the phone).
Well, it turns out that just because you receive an email saying FAFSA was processed doesn’t mean that the school has accessed the info! The FAFSA rep said that once we submit it, we need to contact all the schools to see if they’ve downloaded it. And if they haven’t, don’t delete that school’s name yet!
So I went through all the school portals (again) and only two schools show that they’ve received FAFSA. Two schools, including S’s first choice, have not! And the rest of the schools don’t even display any info at all about financial aid docs.
Berkeley’s Financial Aid office was closed, so I called UC Irvine. I explained the situation, and the rep said, "There’s no way to check your status because we don’t even access FAFSA until beginning of February. What??!! :((
Not sure how to proceed from here, but I think I will call the privates tomorrow to see who has the FAFSA and who does not.
Ugh! This is distressing @happymochi! I did the submit and delete and submit again. D and I will have to check. ~X(
