After mine was processed, I emailed several schools to be sure they received it. One responded and said they don’t download them until after January 31st.
@Undercovermom1 Sorry to be the bearer of bad news! This wouldn’t be an issue for most of us if FAFSA allowed up to 20 schools on their darn form!
@Justathought1 Do you have more than 10 schools? If so, will you just wait until February to add more?
@Undercovermom1 @happymochi We did the same with more than 10 schools. From another thread that I read, the information for the first 10 schools are in FAFSA server (somewhere!!). Then when you delete and added the other schools, it makes 2 files for schools and all schools including the first 10 will have access to the file anytime the want. At least that is what I thought after reading those posts I read earlier. It is possible that the FAFSA person on the phone is not familiar with the process!
Here is what I saw in another thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/455586-fafsa-more-than-10-schools-avoid-my-mistake-p7.html
"I called up fafsa cust. service today to clarify how to make sure if the schools have downloaded my fafsa info. He said once fafsa submitted, the information is loaded into school’s databse but the school may not view it right away. They can download it into their system whenever fin-aid office wants to. That tells me even if we delete first set of schools to accommodate next set, the first set of schools do have fafsa information in their database, even if they download after a month. Hence option 1 seem reliable. "
Seeing as the instructions on how to submit to more than 10 schools came directly off the FAFSA website, I would think we’d be ok.
@lonetreegrad @Undercovermom1 I sure hope so.
I saw this thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1847557-fafsa-for-15-schools-p2.html
And a poster (#18) said:
"I’m concerned because I just deleted our first 10 schools to add 2 more. One is Harvard. When on their site to get their ID#, I saw this: “The FAFSA will only let you have 10 schools listed at one time. If you are applying to more than 10 schools, you may want to call around to see if they have already received your FAFSA and you can remove their FAFSA code. Since we at Harvard don’t download FAFSAs until students are admitted, it’s not a good idea to remove Harvard’s FAFSA code.” !!!
https://fafsa.ed.gov/help/fotwfaq14.htm
these instructions offer additional ways to add more schools
Ugh!! We added the first 10 (mostly selective schools, D’s top 5), then deleted and added the 3 safety schools. Based on the post you have, these selective schools don’t see it after we removed their codes. Maybe I will wait to file our taxes with the 3 schools, then after processing, add the 10 back so that the selective schools would be able to download the FAFSA anytime they want!
This is crazy that FAFSA tells you one thing and the schools tell you another!
What a hot FAFSA mess.
My sister finally got her FAFSA signed after a 30 minute phone call. Apparently the system didn’t recognize her ID or something wacky like that! Hope all FAFSA issues are resolved soon!
Interesting read about college confidential from Georgia Tech admission blog:
http://pwp.gatech.edu/admission-blog/2016/01/14/holistic-admission-the-struggle-is-real-part-2-of-3/
And that’s why the whole “Chance me” thread from College Confidential is basically pointless. College Confidential is an online forum where students discuss the admission process, pose questions to other commenters, and share their experiences with particular schools. There are some helpful threads on subjects and occasional experts who provide facilitation of topical discussion. But largely, at least at this time of year, there are long exchanges between students and parents that have come to be known as “chance me.” In these threads parents, I mean students… well, let’s call a spade a spade, parents pretending to be students, post stats such as GPA, test scores, extracurricular involvement, essay topics, and other demographic descriptors. Then other forum members provide their thoughts, speculation, and odds of that person being admitted to a particular school. In reading those strings, I am reminded of the quote “most advice is sound- but it’s rarely sound advice.”
@sunbeams I never got the whole idea of “chance me” threads. They always seemed pointless- they would either get your hopes up or down. But I do like CC for the community especially on this thread. Much more interesting than the high school class of 2016 thread.
I agree about the Chance Me threads. Perhaps it might help someone if their expectations were truly out of line, but there are so many resources like the Common Data Set, etc., that I think it’s better if people actually look at those since they are more accurate. I do think this community is very helpful though. Look at what’s happening just now with the FAFSA issues. There are so many things to keep on top of! This is also a good place for support too!
Interesting @sunbeams. Thanks for sharing
@sunbeams the interesting theme to me was the assumption parents are pretending to be students. Some chance me and other threads are so over-the-top in terms of the student’s perfection it seems of like an elaborate defense, not offense. (i.e. “I’m much better than you, you don’t have a chance, don’t bother applying because I (or my kid) am vastly superior to you.”) Icky!
Well before I’d heard of CC, a friend of mine had gone to an informational night about a college in her state and this couple came up to her and said, “Want us to chance you? Than you can chance us back!” She had no idea what they meant, and was completely put off by the idea. Then I found CC and saw the “chance me” forum and realized that might be where these parents had gotten the idea. It amazes me that people think it means anything.
On an unrelated note, is anyone else wishing mail came 2 or maybe 3 times a day? I practically sprint down to the mailbox after the mailman comes, and when there is nothing for D, I find myself rather put off that I’ll have to wait another 24 hours. He comes right before I need to leave to pick D up from school most days. I want to know what her top school is going to tell her! I think she’s getting antsy too-she’s taken to forwarding the emails she’s getting in response to any questions she’s send out.
D16 was accepted to Marquette University today. She was accepted to the School of Health Science and will hear about admission to the direct entry DPT program by mid-February.
Still waiting on Ithaca which she should hear from before the end of January and then she will be ready to make a decision!
Just the other day I went back to review D16’s supplemental essay for the Marquette DPT program and noticed a typo in the very first sentence. An “a” used twice that we must have overlooked when she revised the essay at some point. I have been obsessing about this typo. One of D16’s classmates had received her acceptance from Marquette last Saturday and I saw that others on CC had already received their letters, I was convinced that the typo had been the downfall of D16’s application. (Marquette repeatedly told us that acceptances were sent out via regular mail and would not come email or via a change on the application portal, all letters would be mailed on the same day, so we were absolutely convinced she was denied) Then today D16 received an email that read congratulations again on your acceptance to the university. Hold up, what acceptance? Then I noticed in the first sentence of the second paragraph of her Marquette acceptance, an error… “The selection committee the direct entry Doctorate in Physical Therapy program will meet to review physical therapy applications.” Feel so much better about the typo.
This is the second acceptance letter that has gone missing or has been delayed by the USPS.
D18 is convinced that her sister has used up all of our family’s “acceptance luck” and will be staring at a big stack of denials when her turn comes.
Well exams are done and the boys have a long weekend off of school. DS16 will spend it finishing up scholarship essays. He took a rigorous course load this year, and did very well on all of his exams. For that we are grateful. DS19 also did very well so it’s been a good day at our house .
Congrats @labegg on the acceptance and to @carolinamom2boys on the finished exams.
D had a phone interview today and submitted her last college application tonight.
Big sighs of relief! Now we wait until Spring …
DS hit submit on his 12th and final application!!! YAY!!! This weekend it is the FAFSA and Profile - oh, and that stupid verification.
