Congratulations, everyone, on finishing applications, exams, FAFSA, and on just surviving what has thus far been a really stressful week.
S has a Starbucks interview with one of his reachiest schools today, and another interview (via Skype) on Sunday. Meantime, he also got an email from the admissions guy at Deferral School asking him for an informal essay detailing what he’s been up to this semester. So it sounds like he may actually be still in the running, however minimally. :crossing fingers:
We are so far behind everyone schedule wise. Midterms start on Jan 25. We won’t get first semester grades until sometime in Feb. D is still being very good about doing homework. Our school allows seniors with an A in a course to skip the finals so that is her goal. She doesn’t want to be taking any finals the week before graduation.
@carolinamom2boys what a relief the semester is finally over. My DD just finished yesterday too and will enjoy a long 4 day weeken. She can finally send her 1st semester transcripts and be finished with everything and just wait now.
Good luck everyone still dealing with interviews. My DD had 2 this week. She cried the other day from all the stress and worrying she won’t get in anywhere. Fingers crossed we all hear good news over the next couple of months.
@petrichor11 Crossing fingers for your S’s upcoming interviews and the chance to do an informal essay for the deferral school - that sounds promising! My S would be able to write an amazing informal essay…about writing endless essays this semester (for college apps, scholarships, honors programs, etc)!
All of the our interviews were for merit and required except our interviews with the Dean of CS and the Honors college. I think it did help to show interest .
It seems all our DC16s will be trained about Title IX as part of orientation for college next year. Apparently the major problem is the boys and girls have very little accurate understanding of what “consent” in sexual relations means. Heavy, heavy stuff.
DD has one interview today for one of the reach schools. Out of all interviewers she had so far, this might be the most challenging one since the person did not sound on the phone like he really wants to do it.
As far as interviewing in general, she always try to get interview, even for interview optional schools. I think it shows interest and adds personally to the application.
@4kids2graduate Thanks for your comment about the handwritten letter. It made me get it out of the file and read it closely. It is, actually, a hand written, front and back. addressed to S. That being said, it is from one of his safety schools, which, being a safety, we already expect him to be admitted to. But, I hope that this contact will encourage S to seriously consider the school and and its offerings once he gets his acceptance. It is the largest school he is applying to and while I do still think he would thrive at a smaller school, the larger ones have some honor programs that could help with that small feel environment if the fit is otherwise good. We shall see. Part of me thinks it is not good that February has an extra day this year - we need to get right to March so we (meaning everyone on this forum) know what the options are.
Both of DD’s interviews have been with schools that really want applicants for acceptance and merit to show demonstrable interest. One is also supposed to be a very two way interview with a more distant school she hasn’t visited, so she has a set of questions to ask ready for that one.
On the handwritten letter or note, it is pretty amazing that effect that has after you have been inundated with a billion form letters, emails, packets and books from schools. She received an acceptance from one school with some hand written notes about one of her essay topics and it really struck home with her.
I am hoping D16 will be back in our town some time after college–maybe not right away. I live close to my parents, and we see them often, and I hope our kids have seen the benefits from this. Also, D16 looked toward the horizon and said to me just yesterday, “I’m really going to miss these mountains!”
Yes, @Sophmore1, especially since this is my child who has some serious sass most of the time…50 pages ago or so, weren’t we all talking how it’s hitting home to the kids that they’ll be leaving?
@eastgrad yes it is hitting home for my daughter. Everyday she makes a comment that stops me in my tracks. I sure am going to miss her being around every day.
