Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Rip Glenn Frey. I think Take it Easy is my fave.

There is a decent youtube video of the Eagles Farewell Tour from their concert in Australia- 2:45 hours of magic!
One of my favorites that was never on an album is ‘Seven Bridges Road’ - they should could harmonize!

I got to see the Eagles twice , and both times they were amazing . I would’ve thought Walsh would’ve gone before Frey. So sad.

@bookmom7 Seven Bridges Road is the best. Will definitely look for that video.

@carolinamom2boys - envious! I only saw Don Henley solo.
Understand what you mean about Walsh- lol.

Back in the day people could afford to go to concerts. My kids won’t have that luxury.

Saw Billy Joel , Heart and the Doobie Brothers twice too. The best concert I’ve ever been to was my first one: Elvis

I was never a huge Eagles fan, but I followed Glenn Frey. I thought that “Smugglers Blues” was the perfect video song-told a complete story with a plot, bad guy, retribution, etc.

I was lucky enough to go to college close to NYC, live close to Boston, and go to a college that was large enough to bring in major stars for shows at student rates.

At college I saw Pete Seeger and Marcel Marceau, America, Harry Chapin; in NY or CT: Billy Joel (2X), CSN; in Boston: John Mellencamp, Cyndi Lauper, Simon and Garfunkel, Gordon Lightfoot, Dan Fogelberg, Huey Lewis, Neil Young (in my hometown in NH). My sister has never forgiven me for not buying us tickets to see Elton John and Billy Joel together back in the 80’s. That would have been something, huh?

D has had a never-ending day. She worked at the museum all day, had about 90 minutes after that to eat dinner and relax, then was off to driver’s ed. They got the dates wrong when she was supposed to start in the fall, so she ended up having to start today. She already made her lunch so she can just fall into bed so she’ll be rested for school tomorrow. She got an email from one of her colleges today saying that they are done reviewing her application and are now reviewing the short answer essays that we sent out after the app was submitted. We don’t expect to hear a final decision from them until March or even April, but it’s nice to know it’s moving along.

@sseamom, good luck to your daughter with driver’s ed! I think learning to drive in Seattle would be quite the challenge, but you could probably drive just about anywhere after that. I learned in Atlanta, and am not easily intimidated on the roads  My daughter does not have much intense highway experience, and no real way to get it up here, unfortunately. But she can do ice and snow

@sseamom when DS16 was learning to drive, I was a nervous wreck, but now I’ve become so spoiled because he drives DS19 and himself to school everyday. It’s going to be quite the eye opener next year when I have to become chauffeur again.

D16 got her license in August 2014 and has been driving herself and D19 to school everyday.

I’m a natural worrier so I check the weather everyday to ensure it’s still ok to drive to school. If the weather is bad, then I have her use my SUV. If the weather is good, then she can use her Jeep Wrangler. It’s a 5-speed manual and it took her only 2 weeks to learn to drive that Jeep.

She drove herself for the first time in April 2015. I followed her in my car.

D16 won’t have a vehicle in college though so that’ll help with my sanity and wallet.

Same as @carolinamom2boys we will miss having her help out with driving siblings to places. We don’t project D19 to have her license until summer 2018.

As we get more serious about specific schools the reality of the commute has been sinking in. However, once I remember that DS will likely take his car to campus as a sophomore I get a little sad. I could have as little as a half dozen trips to campus left!

Ahh, the Eagles. I too grew up with them. I have almost all of their music. Taking it easy is my favorite.

Is my S16 the only 17 year old in the world that doesn’t want to get a drivers license? D18 might be driving before he does. At this point, I just want him to get it so he has it. If his permit expires before he gets his license, he will have to repeat the written test.

My 17yo is in no rush to learn to drive and we’ve just resigned to her waiting for another year or two for learning. What stresses me out is that she might need a job that would require her to drive and she’d have to bow out. Oh, well.

My D16 couldn’t wait to get her permit at 15 and license at 16. A lot of her friends waited and then ultimately regretted it. My daughter was a chauffeur for a while (but I didn’t allow her to drive friends for 4 months). I have another D17 who is 16 so I have 2 kids driving. I make them share the car because in less than a year one will be gone and she won’t be taking the car to college (at least not freshman year). I don’t miss taking them to school at 6:45 but I still make their lunch so I can hold on to my babies for a little while longer.

I never use hand warmers here in Chicago-ish. My husband does occasionally when he goes out with his astronomy club all night
 .
Layers, and made with the right fabrics - polypropylene glove and sock liners work wonders. A good warm hat lined with fleece, and yes, a scarf helps a lot with keeping warm. Also good warm shoes and boots.

My husband always says - There s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing choices.

Our S16 isn’t in a hurry to get his license, but hopefully he’ll be ready to take the road test by spring break. Since public transit is good here it’s not a huge deal. He’s also probably going to college in Philadelphia, so he won’t need a car there.

D16 got her permit and license at the earliest possible time. She couldn’t wait to drive. S19 is only 14 and is already itching to drive. We live in a small town where there is nothing in walking distance, no public transportation and even biking is dangerous due to narrow winding roads. Driving gives them their freedom. D16 is driving S19 to school everyday. Once she leaves he will have to take the bus, though that means getting up 30 minutes earlier. The high school bus here picks up at 6:25. Uggh.
