Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Okay, so here’s a question: why does CC think I’ve started three threads when it only lists one in “my threads”? The one listed is the only one I ever started.

It’s 19 feels like 6 here in upstate NY but I’m pretty used to it- the last two winters were colder than this one. But yeah I can totally imagine the shock for someone from a warmer climate. I have 3rd cousins that live in FL and when they came to CT for a wedding last March they saw snow for the first time at 16 and 12 and froze!

This Southern girl remembers being at school up north (waaay up north) and showering right before my first class, then walking across campus in negative temperatures. Icicles just do wonders for curly hair, believe me!

I attended UF as an undergraduate (a million years ago!)…which also had some cold snaps where it would get below freezing, even though that was the exception to the rule. But the day it actually snowed, the campus buses stopped so that all the students could get off to “stand in the snow”, students scraped the thin dusting off of cars and made snowballs, they cancelled afternoon classes - it was quite the event! The flurries only lasted a couple of hours, but was talked about for a long time!

So, for those of you looking toward the south for college, even Florida can have some ccccold moments!

Kudos to the colleges that provide hand warmers for touring prospective students!

D has three colleges with a “pretty good chance” she will be invited to visit in February or March and the school will help with travel costs. She has one jacket I picked up at a thrift store. I’ve had some winter boots for her in my Amazon cart for months, maybe I should pull the trigger. Beyond that, I guess a hat and gloves and maybe the hand warmers you guys have mentioned. Real winter is going to be a shock, not being properly dressed could make it miserable.

Also, it is probably best you can’t post pictures on here. Last night was a beach picnic with S21s friends and their families. @bouders if you need any move to Hawaii tips, let me know.

I didn’t waste my luck playing powerball last week so hopefully DD will get into her first choice in California since the odds are about the same. She has seen snow only once at the Palm Spring Aerial Tramway so if she gets into her East Coast schools it will be interesting.

Well, D16 confirms what I have always suspected, Wooster is too small. “If they would just pick up and move to the city they would definitely be a contender.” and it doesn’t matter how many times I say, but they wear kilts, play the bagpipes and tartan is the school color…

PS. She says the cold isn’t too bad.

@palm715 I’d recommend wool socks as well as a good fleece jacket or pullover to wear alone or as an extra layer.

We were married in Maui almost 20 years ago - before destination weddings were a big thing. We haven’t made it back yet, but I hope to someday.

Maybe Wooster should be a contender for your son @petrichor11 . Sounds right up his alley .

@petrichor11 I have 4 threads, even though I have only started 2. I noticed an extra popped up right after I flagged a post. I think flagging might count as a thread. Have you flagged anyone?

@palm715 It is all about layers. I am at work (school cancelled today because wind chills were colder than -30 at bus time BTW) and I just took off my sweater because it is so hot in the building. Warm socks, hat and mittens are key for being outside. I’ve never had the hand warmers personally–I just carry a big insulated cup of coffee with me to warm my hands more!

No, I don’t believe I have, @LKnomad- if I did it was purely accidental.

:THUD:

@DAPIStained , I hope you have a wonderful time with your wife in Hanover. Sounds like lovely memories there!

My daughter is more concerned with too hot than too cold, I think. It does sound like many places in the US are significantly colder than our subarctic location at the moment! We are actually wishing for more snow. I sadly left my coat in the car at airport dropoff for last week’s college visit whirlwind tour. No problem in L.A. (though I had to smile to see a couple of people thoroughly bundled in winter coats at 60 degrees), but temps at the PA school were in the twenties, with wind, and there was quite a bit of outdoor walking to be done.

I know this is OT but, RIP Glenn Frey :frowning:

Could probably sing along with just about any Eagles song… Anyone else?

Yup @bookmom7! This year has certainly gotten off to a rocky start. Enough is enough.

@bookmom7

I looked on my iTunes account and realized I had only a couple songs from The Eagles.

I downloaded a bunch from from them and from Glenn Fry from his time as a solo artist.

I’m shocked I didn’t have more songs from them already.

Sad day.

@bookmom7
Listening to 2 of my favorites tonight, Tequila Sunrise and New Kid in Town.

Glenn Frey is a big part of the soundtrack of my high school and college years. The parts I remember, anyway.

@petrichor11, I have 6 threads listed but only 4 when I click to list them, and I’ve wondered about this discrepancy too. @texaspg, can you shed any light on this?

It’s rainy, cold, and miserable here–and has ruined our evening plans. :frowning:
