Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

DD has another interview today. One school has not contacted her for an interview yet and another school does not provide an alum interview. So she’s mostly done. 1st semester will end next week and there will be no changes in her academics. Her school does not rank nor release GPA to colleges, not even average GPA. Her school officially does not calculate GPA but the school use it for naviance.

Got an e-mail saying W-2 is ready. So it is time to fill out FAFSA and CSS profile.

Sorry for those with kiddos that are stressed and struggling. I have tried to explain to my son that the uncertainty is just part of the process and it’s OK to feel that way, but I am not sure it’s helping. If only they could see how much great stuff is ahead.

I updated and sent out the CSS profile last night. Next on the task list- record all the tax form/ IDOC due dates.

@Waiting2exhale if your younger “waiters” have any interest in HBCU’s at all and there is a black college fair near you, I would recommend that you go. They’re nothing like the huge cattle call ones that take up entire convention centers. We’ve been able to meet the actual directors of admissions at more than one, and sometimes they can make on-the-spot admission decisions. I would also be happy to tell you D’s impressions (or ours) of any of the schools she/we toured.

@me29034 I feel for your D. I’ve been in her shoes. If she wants to talk to someone who gets it, PM me.

Congrats on the good news @bookmom7 @MidwestMomTo2

We just recieved the National Society of High School Scholars invite for the low low price of $60!

We received that last week.

@LKnomad That was one of my D’s many pieces of mail yesterday! I say, if you have to pay for the honor, it isn’t much of an honor.

Sorry to hear so many kids are stressed. I’ve been surprised at how well my D has done with this. She can be an anxious kid, but not over this (at least not most of the time.) Of course, we haven’t really made any decisions yet either.

This was the only DD’s piece of mail yesterday. Don’t they know we need to see large envelopes! The more the better.

We received that NSHSS last year and did not join.

We got the National Society of High School Scholars mailing today. Only one kid, though. S will just have to remain unrecognised, poor oppressed child. He’ll be crushed.
/sarcasm

Didn’t even share the letter from NSHSS to DS. Went straight to the recycle bin.

I got that letter last year. Are any of your D’s obsessing over the High School Musical reunion? I never watched it and therefore don’t care but I have several friends that are. And I think it’s really hitting home to them how old we are.

Good news today-D got into one more college-the one we hadn’t heard from since late Oct. or early Nov. despite it being a rolling admission school. She’s now 7 for 7. The top choice has still not come through-still waiting.

@readingclaygirl YES! She was just telling me that she is taping it, along with old episodes of Suite Life and Raven. The 3rd (?) HSM came out when my older D was away and college and I took D to see it in the theater-we both cried as they all left for college. Doesn’t seem like it was that long ago.

D just came back from a meeting at the school down the street to do some of her senior project in a real elementary classroom. The teacher she met with turned out to be the mom of a former classmate, another teacher once taught at her former middle school, and she saw two former students in the summer program where she is a teacher’s assistant. Sounds like it will be a very comfortable place for her to work.

@sseamom Yay! Congrats to your D! <:-P

Congrats @sseamom . It sounds very promising.

@sseamom: I think I’ll lay the seeds over here with the next two. They are never exposed to the idea of anything with a capital B in it except for me, and I really didn’t see that happening until I did.

I toured Spelman, and was interested in Xavier years and years ago, but felt radically out of place at Spelman at the time, and never made it past a paper interest in Xavier, though now that I think about it, I really thought about going. I know exactly one person who graduated from an HBCU, a classmate who attended Wilberforce, and had absolutely nothing but love for it.

I know where to reach you…thanks.

I once read that if you have to pay for scholarships then it is a scam. No NSHSS for us, it’s in the trash.
Congratulations @sseamom.
