@mom23travelers, that is hilarious. I was thinking the only jacket I have is a sweat jacket and a hoody.
For those of you who will have kids applying to college in the near future, you might find this interesting.

@Justathought1 There was a related article in the NY Times too: http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/01/20/opinion/rethinking-college-admissions.html
Pittās streamlined application process came up in here a few weeks ago. We were so impressed with their no nonsense and rolling admissions application. It was practically stress free! Why canāt more schools have a similar approach?
I agree. Pitt was the first app for S, his only rolling school. He got his admission to the Honors College in about two weeks time, back in September. Seems so long ago now. I also think it is over the top what schools require for extra essays. When my D applied, in 2009/2010, most schools had 3 supplemental essays. It was crazy. Surprisingly, WUSTL, only required the common app essay and they are still that way. Wasnāt the common app supposed to eliminate all the extra essays??? I can understand some short answer type questions but I canāt imagine all the schools spending much time reading 3 or 4 essays per applicant yet the kids spend hours on them. Okay, the essays have been finished for about a month, so I will stop my complaining now.
@BeeDAre I completely sympathise with your daughterās schedule woes. As I type, S is finishing his second rehearsal today and heading toward his third. Heāll be home around 9:30 to start homework, and gets up at 5:30 to catch a 6:25 school bus.
Lather rinse repeat every Tuesday and Thursday.
Mondays and Wednesdays heās home by 4:30, after a single rehearsal. And of course, the nights he has homework are always Tuesdays and Thursdays. Weekends are for band performances and/or competitions, for one band or another.
No wonder band kids all date other band kids. Thatās all they have time for.
Gotta say one thing though-- band kids definitely learn time management!
They just called school off for tomorrow due to pending icy weather. Boys are extremely excited.
Iām wondering again if we did the FAFSA correction procedure correctly. D16 has more than 10 schools, so we sent it to the first ten (the most important ones, actually), waited we had an e mail confirming processing and the SAR, then did a correction to send it to the last few schools. We did the CSS profile the same day. Iām seeing on several schools sites that her CSS profile was received, but the FAFSA isnāt noted. She sent an e mail to a couple of schools, but really hoping we didnāt mess that up.
Also noticed a subject test missing on oneās schoolās applicant info page too. Hopefully can get that corrected.
Yay, getting out of school for weather! But - boo to ice! We had a rare ice storm here in northern IL a month ago. Yikes, that is nasty stuff. And HEAVY. That was when my husband was still recovering from surgery and it took my D and I two days to shovel our drive and walk, the slush was so heavy. So be careful!
The predictions are all over the board here 1/4 of ice with 1-4 inches of snow up to a foot of snow depending on the track. Iām just glad I donāt need to worry about the boys going to school.
@petrichor11 , yes, it seems the band kids all have a special bond with one another because they spend so such time together⦠Their second family is the theater kids, because often the two groups work together.
Hereās a new one: The phone rings my mom answers it and the caller asks for my sister. My mom asks who it is the person says they are from Lewiston College. My mom says āare you trying to recruit her?ā āYesā āsorry sheās going to the Culinary Institute of America.ā Never got a college phone call before- wondering how they even have our number. This was a completely random college.
I saw 3 pieces of college mail today and thought it was late in the game for S16 to get that many in one day. Turned out they were all for S18. He seemed a little excited at first, but they all wound up in recycling.
@Booajo you may not all be asleep but you sure have an excuse for letting the furnace guy in and then going right back to bed and staying under the blankets! Sending hot beverages your way. ~O)
S just got his first official acceptance. This is the super safety school that basically admitted him last year gave him a scholarship.
Congrats @Mysonsdad
Congratulations @Mysonsdad ! I hope the scholarship is substantial.
DS received a scholarship offer from one of his acceptances today. It is not enough to pull that school back into the short list. He could go there to compete for more but is not interested enough to go do so. That school is officially out of the running.
Yay Congrats @Mysonsdad ! <:-P Sorry financial concerns had to pull one out of the race, @Cheeringsection but atleast the list is narrowing.
@Mysonsdad congrats on both scholarship and acceptance!
@BeeDAre hope the stress lessens.
@Booajo sorry about furnace. No fun to spend the money on that sort of thing.
@mstomper Iām there with you. My D19 got three today, one yesterday. (Her school has students take PSAT as freshmen so she has ended up on lists.)
Weāre just in the loooong wait for D16. There is a very slight chance she could get good news next week on a scholarship/admittance. Super long shot.
Do we have any other USC hopefuls here? The idea of waiting for an answer until the last week of March, when she applied before Dec. 1, is mind-bending.
DD was rejected from U of Virginia. I checked naviance and it seems she is the highest stat student at her school who was rejected from U of Virginia last 5 years. I am not sure U of Virginia move more holistic admission process or they decided not to admit many students from DDās high school. U of Virginia accepted more than 10 students from DDās school each year but generally no student matriculated U of Virginia. So⦠who knows.
