I’m so sorry @DAPIStained
@readingclaygirl Thanks. It is OK for her bc she was accepted to U of Michigan already. Both school is different, but DD feels very similar between two schools.
@Mysonsdad I finally get to say congrats to your son!
Nothing at all in the mail today. There was a special guest speaker for the seniors at D’s school today, but they forgot to tell HER. She is not in class with most of them so is sometimes left out. This speaker is one of the Seattle Seahawks talking about his foundation. D was NOT happy. “They remember to tell me about a scholarship workshop, but a SEAHAWK? Noooo.”
@DAPIStained sorry about UVA. I can’t recall which parent posted the comment that schools admit those they feel they can most help to succeed. You daughter is a talented writer. Perhaps UVA did not feel up to the challenge of improving on what she brought to the table.
Congratulations @Mysonsdad That is great to have at least one in the bag at this point. Even a safety one.
@DAPIStained So sorry. Sometimes results are so unpredictable.
Biting my nails with you @MidwestMomTo2
Hoping for a happy surprise, @Ballerina016!
So sorry to hear that @DAPIStained. I’ve always wondered if a history like that from a school (bunches of admissions by no one goes) affects future admission chances for kids from that HS.
I’m so sorry, @DAPIStained UVa’s loss.
Congrats @Mysonsdad!
@MidwestMomTo2 @Ballerina016 Antsy over here too!
@BeeDAre I’m so sorry for the stress, but you are a great storyteller. I totally understood where you were coming from.
@MidwestMomTo2 @Ballerina016 & @happymochi – Fight On!
Sorry to hear that @DAPIStained. I’m a UVa alum, and sometimes their admissions decisions are just plain weird. It’s their loss, not hers.
Glad you’re getting the new furnace promptly @Booajo Our furnace died during the winter of DDs senior year. Nothing like freezing temps inside the house to add to the stress.
Thanks for all the condolences. I remember one parent in cc was complaining about U of Michigan result saying that his child was accepted to Stanford in EA but deferred from U of Michigan EA. I think this is how unpredictable college admission is and how important to have wide net to get reasonable acceptance.
I heard each year some school changed their mind how many student they accept from DD’s school. For example, Johns Hopkins accepted 32 students from 2012-2014. But generally 4 students matriculated to Johns Hopkins each year from DD’s school. Then, last year they accepted only 4 students instead of 10-11 students from her school and as a result, only one student matriculated. There seem some dynamics between hs and colleges which we have no control.
Sorry @DAPIStained Our HS usually has about 40 UVA acceptances with 20 attending and thus far we’ve only heard about 5. We have a pretty extensive Naviance for UVA and it seems like there are some high achieving students that don’t get in every year. Not sure what it is that UVA is looking for exactly.
Congrats mysonsdad, and condolences DapiStained. D got a letter for UT Dallas about their national merit finalist offer - sounds good, but she’s tapped out and not applying to any other schools (plus the deadline may already be passed).
@Carlson2 you might want to nudge her a bit for the UT Dallas if there is any chance of her going there. I did the math on their National Merit scholarship and for tuition, fees, room and board and books the out of pocket cost is less than $100 a semester!
@MidwestMomTo2 @Ballerina016 @happymochi @palm715 Good luck to all! Waiting over here too!
Sorry to hear about UVA @DAPIStained.
I’ve heard that OOS for UVA is more difficult.
S finally finished his scholarship essay for the local applications. Fortunately the same essay can be used for multiple applications. His executive admin (me) put together 9 applications last night. Now if he could only remember to turn them in to the GC today.
I have missed reading posts from a busy day at work and at home…so to cover all bases - Super Congrats to all receiving good news in the last day or so, fingers and toes crossed to those still waiting and in exam mode (and possibly stressing), virtual hugs and sweet indulgences for those who have received negative news, less than anticipated news, or dealing with frustration with schedules, interviews, furnaces (hope you all are able to remain warm and toasty until the new furnace is installed and operational), etc.
D received another deferral (second one) from on of her EA schools this morning…she is a little less salty about this one as…once again…the stats of the majority of the deferrals is phenomenal. The acceptances are truly the creme de la creme of all applicants and while my D’s application is very good there is always applicants that are better and that truly is life. This entire process has become so ultra competitive that it is no wonder that our kids are feeling the overwhelming pressure. D is handling this notification with much more poise and maturity than her previous. For that I am immensely proud of her and feel that she is definitely growing up and will absolutely be OK no matter where the chips may fall in the end.
I have to say I really like the use of the term “salty”. I’ve seen it a few times in this thread.
Ok, it’s Friday…TGIF. Buckle down for the storm, fellow Northeasterners…
@MidwestMomTo2, USC (So Cal) hopeful here…on some other threads there have been posts about SC sending notices late January to let students know where they stand in regards to scholarships. USC’s website says we should know by mid Feb. but from the other threads it says they are mailed out the end of January but because of distance some kids won’t get it until Feb.
@DAPIStained, sorry to hear about UVA. S and I have gone to their roadshow many times and never considered them until the last one we went to in the Fall. I read somewhere that the state of Virginia requires that 70% of the people who are accepted to UVa are from Virginia. I really need to start keeping track of where I read things.
The stress of Senior year is really getting to the kids in my class. Some have already been accepted to their #1 choices and want out, some are still waiting to hear and filling out scholarship forms and other things and want out.
Thanks for all the congrats for S
Yay @Mysonsdad
Stay warm @Booajo + those on the East Coast!
That unfortunate @DAPIStained
We’ve had a bad news, good news, bad news week so I will second the TGIF.
