Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Regarding the storm back east…I had an opportunity to go to DC this weekend for a conference and I was thinking of taking S so he could visit Georgetown. I had been going back and forth about whether we should go and the last few days kinda regretting missing the opportunity. Then last night I heard that there is going to be a blizzard in DC this weekend. My S with his shorts and me with my hoodie would have never survived

@Mysonsdad Congrats to your son on the acceptance and scholarship and good luck with USC. Rumor has it they are mailing out the scholarship letters today. Fingers crossed!

@lvmjac1 and @DAPIStained my sympathies to your kids. I continue to be amazed at the resilience of young people. Actually, after I watched “The Revenant” (S16 insisted), I’m just glad to be lucky enough to live in modern times with good, safe access to water, shelter and food! I know even today some are not as fortunate. When I get frustrated with homework, midterms, and college stuff I have to take a deep breath.

Just dropped off S14 at the airport to return to college as we brace for the big mid-Atlantic storm. Stay safe everyone.

@Mysonsdad Well, it would have been good practice!

My college kid was supposed to be heading home on today for the week between semesters but Amtrak has canceled all trains going through DC until Sunday. So she is stuck in NJ a couple more days. Good thing she signed up for intersession meals just in case.

The public school semester still isn’t over here. Exams start next Friday with the semester ending Feb 3.

Still having college board issues and trying not to cry.

If you live in the snowbelt this time, the supermarkets are a nightmare.

Reading about how little time band kids have made me miss marching band a little. Robotics is a time killer too. I think when these kids find something they love to do, they just do as much as they can of it. Unfortunately, they have to manage the rest of life at the same time.

I can’t wait for 2nd marking period to be over, semester grades to be sent, and for my girl to get into ‘relax and wait’ mode. She is in a serious ‘doubting herself’ mode and I’m having trouble helping her out of it.

You are much kinder and more patient than I @MuggleMom

@MuggleMom Sorry you have to jump true the hoops. That is so frustrating.

Mid-year grades are in with no damage to her GPA. It was not an easy sail this time, but it the result that counts. Yet to see how these 6 AP classes will move her rank.

@Ballerina016 Hopefully the 6APs will move her rank up, but we found very little movement with my son’s 5 APs because most of his peers were taking the same amount of classes. We just hope to stay where we started.

Didn’t have a chance to give my condolences @DAPIStained.

Thanks a lot for condolences and supports.

I checked naviance and talked with DD this morning while driving her to her school. There were 40 students accepted and 2 students attended from DD’s school last 4 years based on Naviance. No one in her stat region was rejected on scattergram. So it is a little bit puzzling. The school maybe changed their thought on DD’s school because almost no one is going there and now they want to give acceptances who is more likely to matriculate or DD missed something important.

DD showed her supplements to a couple of her friends how they think and it looked OK. My only thought is that she made her applicant account less than a week ago and U of Virginia might consider it as an interest. But still I doubt that public school is following any demonstrated interests. She might have some thought after finding out result from other students.

Anyway, it’s time to let it go and will focus other stuff.

Just got the news that my D was named a US President Scholars Candidate. I don’t think it will have any bearing on admission anywhere else, but I’m still proud of her.

@sseamom Sorry your D missed the speaker.

Congrats @carson2289

Is naviance only available for public high schools? DD is at private school and never heard of it. How do you access it?

I know the school district bought it, That’s how you get the log in information

@catholicmom3 My son goes to a Catholic HS and they have Naviance.

Ditto on the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program @carlson2 . Just when you thought the essay writing was over ~X(

Congratulations to your D @carlson2
