Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@crowlady About 500 Semi-finalist

I agree with you. The number of parents of Semi-finalists speaks loud as to the academic caliber of the CC community.

I do believe it is:
around 4,000 Candidates------
around 800 Semifinalist ------
up to 161 Finalist/Scholars.
:slight_smile:

Wow, so many kids get perfect scores in M+R! My District, one of the largest in the nation, had around 5 students based on academics, the others were for the Arts. Tons of smart kiddos out there *-:slight_smile:

Hoping your D’s interviews went well! @palm715

@palm715 The funny thing is that I inserted the word in my mind and didn’t even realize it until I saw your last post. LOL!

Congratulations @mstomper ! Can’t wait to be in those shoes soon.

@mysonsdad Crossing my fingers and toes for your S!

@happymochi Don’t forget to update the Acceptance List!

Congrats to those with happy acceptances and scholars listings! I feel so unworthy, lol.

D is off on her first in-car driving lesson with the driving school. Kind of a let down as she’s already been driving with me for a couple of months, but it’s required, so. Later today she meets with the student group she’s in to work on their chosen charity.It’s a mix of kids from around the area and they choose cause and a budget that goes to a specific group they pick after ā€œinterviewingā€ them for several weeks. It’s quite interesting.

H and I will sit down tonight and I’ll be showing him all the info I’ve gathering on all the colleges and discuss numbers. He’s really trusting me to get everything together. Yikes.

@4kids2graduate There was a general congrats email and then a follow up email a few hours later with specifics on interview date and time.

I should be in bed but am too wired after tonight. I’m not sure if we were nuts or not, but we did our taxes, immediately followed by the FAFSA, started earlier today. The good news is we’re getting a bit more back this year in taxes and the FAFSA EFC is about what I figured it would be. I explained to H about D’s schools’ costs and where the scholarships so far place each one on the affordability list, what the EFC means, and what D would need to do to make each one work. Turns out that we are exactly on the same page as to what we can afford/are willing to pay. Now we wait for the processing and for the darn honors colleges and scholarships to either come through or not. And #1 school STILL has not responded on paper.

@sseamom Hope all the info you need comes through soon, so you can make those important decisions .

@sseamom Hoping you get all the information you need soon, especially from school #1.

Hi All, been really busy with work and the SNOW that I have been trying to catch up with all the news happening in the interim.

Super Congrats to all the acceptances, scholarship notifications, Presidential Scholars, positive interviews, and any other good news that I may have missed! Patience to those who are still waiting on decisions and virtual hugs and sweet indulgences to those who have received negative or less than expected or hoped for news, frustrations with college board or any other entity, FAFSA, CSS Profile, etc. I am so thrilled for everyone who is receiving all this great news and I can totally relate to those that are still waiting or not receiving such great news (as we are in that boat right now). I hope I did not forget anyone.

Not sure where I left off with last post but D’s alumni interview (for super selective lottery school) in the city was cancelled as a result of weather and is rescheduled for 2 weeks from now. D just received yesterday an email to schedule another alumni interview (for another super selective lottery school) for next week but at least this one is only 10 minutes away! Having the weather postpone her interview from Saturday has just led to more stress and now add on another one right before and she is once again feeling the pressure of it all. She confided in me last night that what if she goes through all these ā€œhoopsā€ sort of speak and nothing comes of it…it would have all been a waste of time. I reminded her that you never know how high you can reach if you do not try. And no matter what, this experience has helped you grow in so many important ways. It is definitely not for naught no matter what the outcomes are! Right now she is feeling very insecure but that I feel is very normal under the circumstances.

@palm715, so glad you have a S21, since I have a D21, and we can do this all again with more virtual parties on your lanai…since what would be my lanai is covered with snow! (When do we start the 21 list?)

Good luck to @lvmjac1 and everyone else’s kids who are doing their interviews…

@EastGrad and @palm715 since we just started the new 20 list, you may have to wait a little while longer!

One more lottery school interview tomorrow and then DD is planning to experiment with her hair. Just to be on a safe side she wants to wait for all interviews to be done.

Best of luck with the interviews and the stress @Ballerina016 and @lvmjac1 D’s!

@Ballerina016
Wishing your d good luck with her interviews and additional scholarship $ at USC. USC is a great option for NMFs- Unfortunately we did not consider due to distance…

@lvmjac1
Wishing your d luck with her interviews also. And, you are right that the process, regardless of outcome, is beneficial. Doing all those interviews will help with her with job interviews in the future!

Sitting at the doctor’s office with S20. Anyone ever use Accutain for acne? Just wondering if anyone has had experience. I figured a message board with parents of teens would be the best place to ask.

@sseamom so glad to hear that you and your DH are in agreement about the financial side of all this. There is enough stress in this process without adding financial disagreement. May all the info you need come sooner rather than later!

I finally have stared a spreadsheet to compare the COA of The schools that have accepted DS. It was enlightening to see how much room and board can vary from one year to the next. One campus has dorms traditionally populated by each class (freshmen vs sophomores vs juniors). They also have minimum meal plans by class. Glad I saw that now so we can plan for it. I used a simple 5% increase per year for costs. Has anyone else done a comparison and what costs did you include besides the ones the school included in COA?

Thanks everyone for the congrats on my d making candidate for US Presidential Scholar. However, for the sake of providing accurate and helpful info to future cc readers, I must clarify that my dd did not get a perfect SAT math + CR score. We are in Indiana and she received a 1580. I believe that is likely the girl’s cutoff score for this state.

I am surprised that she made it. She had a difficult time balancing the demands of competitive dance team with academics. It is so competitive where she dances that if a dancer misses a Saturday rehearsal they are likely to be taken completely out of that part or moved to the back. I scheduled and re-scheduled the ACT three times because d begged me to move it so she could keep her spot in the dances. I wanted her to take the ACT because she did extremely well taking it through Duke’s gifted program in middle school. However, in the back of my mind was the thought that I wanted her in the dances since we pay approx. $12,000/ yr for this activity. Hence, the multiple re-schedule dates.

Well, she never did take the ACT in high school. She took the SAT once and got the 1580. We decided to just let it ride since it was a decent score. TBH, since she was not able to pursue perfection with her test scores, I would have thought her more likely to make it as a Presidential Scholar for the Arts program/ dance.
