Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

I posted this on the USC board and did not get any replies. I think students are mainly posting there. I’m hoping someone can help me here. We missed the 12/1 deadline because I thought it was for the cinematic arts school and my daughter was not ready to submit application. Her stats are good but not as high as everyone’s here so not sure any scholarship would have been applicable. Does USC favor those who apply by 12/1? Does she have any chance for RD? If she is fortunate to get accepted and attend can she apply for scholarships her sophomore year (question for current/past USD students). We’re so disappointed we were not on the ball earlier. Thank you.

@mom2one98 If someone does not apply by Dec 1 then they can apply for regular decision. So yes, she has a chance for regular decision. There are Dorns life scholarships after freshman year, but these are smaller. I think there are also department scholarships. I would imagine that USC does favor those who apply for scholarships because of higher stats and that is why money is thrown at them, but, in my opinion, regular decision is its own thing.

Thank you everyone for the kind words of encouragement.

Thank you everyone! DD is off for her alumni interview now, but I am with @Mysonsdad I think we are almost done too. There is only one school that might overpower this admission, but one needs to be incredibly lucky to get in. Everything else, including Ivys, will be on the opposite coast and difficult financially.

@Mysonsdad - I hope the hours fly by for you and that your D (and you) get great news tomorrow.

@mom2one98 my impression was the Dec. 1 was the deadline for merit scholarships, although USC says they meet all need (as they define it) if your D gets in. Good luck.

@Ballerina016, hooray! It’s wonderful to see the probable final destination in sight!

Thanks for the earthquake comisseration. We are actually out of town for a ski event, staying at a hotel surrounded by water about 50 miles from the epicenter, so tsunami was a concern. I didn’t realize it was that strong until I read my Facebook feed this morning though, lol

I’m another parent who was unaware that the Dec. 1 deadline for USC also meant early acceptance. Although I strongly suggested it - D16 did not apply for the Dec. 1 deadline. She did apply on January 15 though and as I predicted - after I dragged her through the process and pointed out the dual programs she could participate in, she’s really excited about USC. Face palm. I really do think that it is one of the two or three schools she’s applied to that is a best fit.

The good news is that S16 is done; we’re waiting to see if his appeal for a bigger scholarship is successful, but his decision is made. However, we get to start over with S18 soon.

What a great feeling @mstomper ! Congrats to your son on his decision.

@Mysonsdad , I hope you get an answer soon. The uncertainty is awful. @mstomper, glad to hear your journey is coming to an end (for now)

@mstomper it feels good to make a decision, hoping he gets the higher scholarship

My D16 has asked for one thing as her graduation present: a dinner of a burrito at the Costa Rican place followed by a sundae at the soda fountain place near the school. But the graduation and reception at school is scheduled for the dinner hours (who does that??). Well, if the seniors are off that day, maybe we can make her treat a very late lunch or very early dinner, instead. It’d be just us parents and her. Godparents are invited to the graduation, but unsure if they can save the date. There are no friends, for all intents and purposes, in her unique/unusual life. For D16, a normal life starts in college, we expect. Can’t wait. (Keeping fingers crossed DH transitions, too, to a permanent staff job soon and leaves behind these precarious years of contract/temp professional work, of which his industry is increasingly enamoured). This future would be so refreshing.

@bouders I’m in the same boat. As my daughter was doing the USC essays (after the 12/1 deadline) she fell more more in love with USC and now it’s her first choice. I’m just so bummed. I know everything happens for a reason but argh. She is going to be so disappointed.

I am so grateful to come here so I can feel some sense of involvement. My D keeps everything close to the vest. We came home from S21’s basketball game yesterday as D was walking out the door. “Off to the coffee shop?” (her favorite study spot) “Yep.” Because she was a little more dressed up than usual, “Meeting anyone?” “Yeah, my interviewer for XZY lottery school. Bye!” Two hours later, I text “Have you been kidnapped?” Nope. Just a really good conversation. The most interesting tidbit I got after the fact, when they were discussing where to meet, the interviewer offered to travel across island for her instead of visa-versa, and she took him up on it. I would never have the cajones to pick the more convenient option for me instead of the more convenient to the person in power.

Today’s XYZ east coast lottery school interview via Skye is happening right now on the lanai. “No ease-dropping, Mom!” This may be even more daring, showing off our blue-sky, palm-swaying, 80 degree weather to someone buried under two plus feet of snow.

^^^ Oh my, the first time I’ve had this website star-out my word choice. I didn’t think it was THAT bad!

Ok @palm715 now I really need to know what was under ****

Haha, Spanish slang for a body part.

Thanks @greeny8 for fixing my mistake on @georginac’s D in the List of Acceptances.

And congrats to those on the Presidential Scolar nominations list. I’m very impressed and only a little surprised that out of the top ~5000 students in the country so many of them have parents in this forum!

bet I can figure it out ****…

@crowlady ~5,000? I don’t think there are 5K Presidential Scholars :slight_smile: I think it’s something around 500 :slight_smile:
