Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

I am so sorry @Mysonsdad , but it might be too soon to tell. Mail delivery is unpredictable.

I can totally relate to the extra costs including hearing aid costs and that they are not covered by insurance. My husband needs them but they only help with certain decibels and therefore not worth the approximately $1,000 cost per ear of out of pocket (even with care credit which lets you break up the cost to 12 monthly interest free payments). Between the four of us, we have all kinds of medical issues which necessitate continual doctor visits and monthly prescription costs. A few of our doctors have stopped taking insurance all together and therefore their office visit costs are always out of pocket. They are super great doctors and definitely worth the expense but the fact that in order to get good medical care, it is necessary to go totally out of pocket! This entire insurance situation is ridiculous (for lack of a more descriptive adjective) and frustrating beyond comprehension. I am currently still trying to get some kind of resolution in place for my son’s Otolaryngologist visit that was supposed to happen in December in NY but was not allowed and now it has to happen in SC because he is back at Clemson. No supervisors will return my repeated phone calls!!! @LKnomad I could use a little divine intervention from your Dad maybe he can help this bureaucracy see logically and reasonably!

Oh, @Mysonsdad, that is a heart-breaking message. Hugs to you and your son.

@mysonsdad. I really feel bad for your son. Was this the scholarship application that has some delays? Could that be an issue?

@Mysonsdad so sorry! I am sure there will be good news in your future

@mysonsdad - thinking of you and your S and hoping for the best.

LKnomad - I was one of the original accutane users so 30+ years ago. It’s phenomenal stuff. I had horrific, cystic acne and nothing worked. One course of accutane and my skin was clear and remains clear. My parents had Kaiser so it was a covered drug and cost us almost nothing. Funny how a drug that is over 30 years old (if not older) is so expensive nowadays.

All these posts remind me of the great variability in health care costs for all of us. My S21 wears a hearing aid and has a personal FM system – but the public school picked up the cost of the FM system. I am so grateful.

@Mysonsdad, I understand the feeling, truly! Part of me wants to tell you and him that the time is never wasted and the intrinsic rewards are high-- but that’s not the point when your child is feeling low. Hugs to him, and to all the people who love him and hate to see him disappointed. Here’s hoping better days and good news are coming very quickly.

@Mysonsdad - still holding out hope for your son. Maybe a box will show up later on- they seem to be appearing out of nowhere.

Thanks @carolinamom2boys! Oops Sorry @mom2collegekids Sending all my Super Congrats your way…it is coming a bit circuitously but heartfelt none the less.

@carolinamom2boys we also have a family history of bipolar disorder and depression which is why I declined when my son had his initial dermatologist apt 3 months ago. In fact, I am severely bipolar. We decided to give at a try this time around but the dermatologist has required a release from my son’s developmental pediatrician who had been treating him for ADHD because of my history and my son’s other issues. It puts my son’s other doctor on notice so we have double checking for psychiatric issues. That specific issue is what troubles me most but we will watch carefully. I guess know what I am looking for better than most. So my son is very aware of this as a potential issue.

@LKnomad Ouch. My FM systems have been through the school district and thankfully my college will provide one for me. Otherwise we would have to apply for reimbursement through the state Vocational Services.

@Mysonsdad There’s still tomorrow and the next few days for the USC package to come in. It’s not time to lose hope yet.

@LKnomad
My son was dx as moderate to severe ADHD. He had reaction to Adderall that none of us caught on to- severe bad moods. Family Dr and we just concluded he needed to increase dosage because it worked well for him the first couple of years. Increasing the dosage made him worse. The really smart neurologist I took him to figured it out and gave him combination of two drugs, giving a low dose of each. The two drugs magnified the effectiveness of each other. However, he had minimal side effects because they were both low dose.s

I would recommend yearly consult with Neuro with follow-ups with family doctor.

@Mysonsdad so sorry no good news in the mail today. It is indeed a long and cruel process for the kids (and those who love them). Hoping for good news in the days to come for you.

@Mysonsdad so sorry you haven’t received any news. I am still holding out hope for him.

@collegemom2boys congrats on your good news.

@lvmjac1 Sorry about the stress your daughter has had with the cancelled interviews.

@Mysonsdad my heart aches for you both. We, too, remain box less. I will hold out hope for one more day, then move on.

No box doesn’t mean no admission in any case … and USC does promise to meet need.

Hoping great news is still to come for you and him, from this school … or the next.

@Mysonsdad It is so disappointing and hard to wait. It’s certainly frustrating and hurts to see our kids hurting. I’m sure everything will work out. Fingers and toes crossed that some notice shows up soon. I truly believe that the not knowing is the worst.

@MidwestMomTo2

Holding out hope here for you too. There’s still days left over for that box to come in

FAFSA is done! Now there is just New York’s Tution Assistance Program to apply for.
