Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

I ran into a man at the market and had a long discussion about Virginia Tech, about which I know nothing. This guy was such a booster for that school that I came home and asked my husband why we hadn’t looked at that school for W2exit. Seriously, he is devoted to the campus, the culture, the programs, the impact…He graduated from there, his oldest daughter, he’s got two nieces there now, and the teen in the market with him was wearing a sweat with the name on it.

We will be looking further into it, to be sure.

Hey guys, quick CSS question: When they ask if your student expects to receive an outside scholarship for the coming school year (the kid who is first time in 2016-2017), how have you chosen to answer that?

Makes sense to us to put “We don’t know,” or “We hope,” but, of course, that is not an option.

@readingclaygirl glad to hear the test is over, best of luck.
@sseamom @fretfulmother and @petrichor11@ballerina2016 @mom2collegekids @kittymom1102 CONGRATULATIONS to you and your kids
Congratulations LKNomad.
My niece and S best friend just got accepted to the super safety S got accepted to last week.

Thank you @Mysonsdad Regents always get graded that afternoon, so it’s obvious the test is graded but the teacher hasn’t posted the grades yet. So that’s annoying

@crowlady and others talking about FAFSA and 401(k) … yeah, i just discovered this today after i filed my taxes… it was an ugly discovery, for sure.

although there’s no rush, i would much prefer to do it sooner rather than later. it changed our EFC by a lot. it’s not a surprise i’d want to see later in the spring. better to know now…

(i was almost going to post about this earlier, but it was too depressing. we knew our income would be higher than last year because my H taught for a full year – instead of going to school for half and teaching for half – and tried to estimate it as best we could. we were off by a bit and owe a fair chunk to the IRS. that was the first bad thing. then i went to update the FAFSA and discovered i’d missed putting in my 401(k) when i did estimates earlier, which was dumb). i’m the bigger breadwinner, and that – along with the updated income numbers – knocked our EFC up by a whole bunch.) < hard to complain about more income, but like many of you, i’m now looking at an EFC that’s mind-boggling as opposed to just uncomfortable.

because my H had two years in school, with only partial income (and tuition expenses) over three years, it was hard to estimate our new numbers … this was his first year with FT job and apparently in the eyes of the FAFSA, we are now millionaires.

@dcplanner my 401(k) is down a LOT – enough that i will amend it, along with our new/final income/tax numbers for the CSS

It’s definitely scary when you hear that 3 black women were assaulted on a bus at a local state university(UAlbany). Real sad to hear. They are okay thankfully, and the College president seems really upset and ready to take action. It is said to be a racially motivated hate crime.

@Mysonsdad thank you!! :slight_smile: And congrats on the safety too!

@waitingtoexhale - I hope you mean for your next child since Virginia Tech deadline seems to have passed on January 15th.

It is indeed a very good school if your kids have an interest in STEM.

I think in Virginia, they made UVa their liberal arts flagship while VTech is their STEM flagship.

@texaspg:

Oh, yes, for 2020. He has his eyes set on MIT, but I believe it is simply because the sound of it swirls about his ears so often. I’ll cast a wide net, and I’d like to find something outside of the Boston area (have not fallen in love), but then I’m just the Mommy.

Need to make sure I can find something that prepares the immediate next for something in the realm of bioengineering/genetics, but not focusing in on any particular school yet. Kind of eyes wide open, though I know her interests.

Bought D16’s prom dress this afternoon and a formal dress for a military balls. I am pleased to say I was not crying like 2 other mothers in the store, although I did cry a little at the cash register.

Another extended VT family here . . . my wonderful sister (Pamplin) and her daughter who is in engineering. If DS doesn’t go to VT I think his grandparents will be heart-broken. :stuck_out_tongue: My sister is absolutely nuts about the place, and it’s the sweetest thing. It really says alot about the school. I’ve been there a few times through the years and always liked the atmosphere.

ETA: for the record, my DS is leaning in a certain direction that’s not VT. But it doesn’t help that we haven’t heard from VT yet. We will have to see what happens.

Yay! @labegg We bought my sister’s prom dress a couple weeks ago- and my mom shockingly did not cry. That same day we bought the fabric and pattern for my prom dress. I’m very picky and want something simple, soft and with straps so my mom who can sew very well(she made her own wedding dress) is making it!

@readingclaygirl: I have a feeling my next in line would find you simpatico.

So glad you finally have some good news @lvmjac1 ! I’m sorry that the ride has been so rough.

@Ballerina2016, my S received the invite for UCLA Alumni Scholarship.
@readingclaygirl, ugh, sometimes waiting for scores to be put in is agony

Yes it is! @Mysonsdad this teacher is notoriously slow @Waiting2exhale I’m glad your next in line would find me nice(if that’s what you were saying). How old are they?

@Mysonsdad I think it is a great news. From what I read on cc UCLA invites are more selective then UCB. They sent out 4,000 invites out of 112,000 applicants. The only thing is they are sent by Alumni association, not admission. But alumni association gets names of the top 10% and then makes a selection. Anyway, we should see. UCLA admission is completely unpredictable.

My D16 joined the “meltdown” roster last week. Dealing with some difficult people, trying to advance academically, and discovering there really aren’t any small, external scholarships that reward BWRK without spikes sent her over the edge. She had to stay home from school for a mental health day. She spent most of it sleeping, but I also stayed home from work and we had a relaxing day. She’s such a sweetheart and it just kills me to see her in emotional pain. I’m so glad senior year is half over. This kid needs to get on with life.

Wow! go away for a few days and get 100’s of posts behind!
Congratulations to all with good new and hugs and Girl Scout cookies for those with less happy news.

We just got back from D’s audition at the School of Music at OU and it went very well. I do need to send an email to clarify that she is still eligible for departmental scholarships in addition to National Merit, there seemed to be some confusion about that.

This was our second visit to OU and it was very brief! but D was happy with the programs offered by the School of Music. Her instrumental music department is much smaller than we thought. They had a several upperclassmen and a grad student graduate so next year there will only be two sophomores and DD and possibly one other freshman that is auditioning next week on her instrument. Her high school program is 3X this size!

The other thing that struck me about OU this visit is how much lower the cost of living is. We went for a quick lunch at a pub near campus and the bill for the two of us was less than $20 even though D had a soda (unusual for her) and I had a glass of wine and D had an up graded side. For the same meal near us It would have been $30+ and gas is so much less, gas here is $1.5X - $1.7X near and gas near OU was only $1.3X a gallon, I did see one station that had gas for $1.23 but it was an off brand and not sure if it was mistake or if it was a cash only price.

Huge Hugs to her @dyiu13 It is so mentally draining to be a high school senior. People always say how great it is, and it is but its also stressful. I hope everything improves for her soon, and she ends up at a college she is happy at(can’t remember if she has been accepted anywhere yet).
