Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@mysonsdad. Just asked my son about the UCLA scholarship and apparently he got the invite but didn’t bother to tell me. Sigh.

@Ballerina2016, thanks for the information. I was at the gym when I saw your post about receiving an invitation (I read CC on my phone while on a stationary bike). I called S as soon as I left and he had already filled it out and sent it in. Like I have said before, my school gets a lot of kids into UCLA but no one has ever received an Alumni Scholarship. Good luck to your D. Between USC, UCLA and CSULB things sound like they are great for her lately.

Thank you @Mysonsdad let’s see how she will do at her reaches. She did do too well with her EA schools. Our school sends a lot of kids to UCB, but UCLA is a different story.

@readingclaygirl D16 has put down her enrollment and housing deposit at her 1st choice with a full-tuition grant. So, she secure with that. She was hoping to compete for a handfull of outside scholarships to help with books and some R&B.

@dyiu13 That’s good! <:-P where is she headed?

She’s keeping that under wraps, but it seems to have a lot in common with where you’re headed. Like you, she knows her own mind.

Best of luck to your S @LKnomad, is he feeling better?

@Ballerina2016, that’s odd, we don’t do as well with getting students into UCB.

Well I’m happy for her  @dyiu13

Hi everyone. Remember me? Probably not, I’ve been reading along for ages. It’s been a crazy year around here and I just haven’t taken the time to post for a while because I tend to ramble on and spend more time here than I should!

Congratulations to everyone on all of the exciting news!!! S '16 has been in the thick of things with a U Miami EA admit and scholarship as well, a couple of early OOS, state U acceptances and now two likelies he did not expect to hear from at all, let alone this early. More excitement to come for all of our kids, no doubt. Not sure how much more us parents can stand!

@fretfulmother- congrats on all of the good news. I just wanted to pop in here to say Yale was the most generous offer S '13 had (he had many nice offers, for sure) and the one that he used as a bargaining chip. He really enjoyed his visit-he missed the STEM fly-in because our semester grades go out so late, but they did fly him in for Bulldog Days and he loved it…a bit to his surprise. He really liked the residential system. Yale ended up finishing 2nd but he could have been very happy there, no doubt. Hope you son has a great visit. What wonderful choices!

When I attended Clemson 30 years ago (yes I just figured out I was there in 86!) there were only 6 or so ACC schools (no Miami, Florida State etc which joined a little later). Our master’s program in environmental engineering was doing an annual research presentation event with ACC schools. Back then we had GTech, VTech, Duke and UNC participated but UNC was a Environmental Health participant and not engineering. So these were the engineering power houses in ACC(I think NC State had engineering but not big on environmental back then).

The thing I remember most about VTech was that all of us were taken to the most popular student bar which had about 100 different choices of beers, unheard back then in those pre microbrewery era. These beers were from all over the world.

Welcome back, @critter !

@texaspg, you would have been at Clemson when Mr. Petrichor was there.

Re: prom dresses: D hasn’t said anything about going (not in a relationship, not interested in one). She didn’t go last year.

S has a girlfriend, so they’re making plans. Girlfriend has bought three dresses thus far, the main contender and two she’s keeping in reserve. I’m not sure what the rationale is but S says she’s a clearance rack shopper and has a huge wardrobe. Clotheshorse, meet Clotheshorse. They’re well suited in that respect. He’s already reserved his rental for the evening and has had a favorite florist since tenth grade. Most of his friends will wait until a couple of weeks (at most) before to ask anyone-- I’ve given them all the speech about girls needing time to find a dress, make arrangements, etc, but they just look at me like I’m speaking a foreign language. *How long does it take to buy a dress? * Seriously, someone asked that question.

Not a bunch known for the big promposals, either. S tried it once and got turned down by the girl, so he’s wary of the grand gestures- though assuming he and girlfriend don’t break up before April it’s sure bet this year.

Little chance of prom this year. DS16 would never ask someone, so unless he gets asked. I don’t see it happening .

Oddly most kids at D16’s school go in groups not really as “dates”. So her “group” is going. Several boys in the prom group asked several girls in the prom group to their military ball as well. As far as I can tell it’s not really a “date” thing in either instance, just a bunch of friends which is sort of nice because it really takes the pressure off.

Around here kids go to prom even if they don’t have dates. It is quite acceptable and common for kids to go with a group of friends. Luckily they have decreed that girls will not be wearing long dresses this year so shopping should be easier and cheaper than last year’s junior prom which was more traditional. This year’s just sounds like a big party.

I’m most likely going solo to prom! A lot of girls go with friends but all my friends have dates(either boyfriends or just friends). I asked 3 guys but they all turned me down and it is extremely unlikely a guy would ask me.Oh well. I’ve been in Student Council and have done a lot for prom,so I will enjoy it.

We still have that Sadie Hawkins dance thing to deal with sometime in Feb. D19 has her date, I think. D16 has a couple guys in mind to ask.

@readingclaygirl Well that’s too bad…for those 3 guys. They lost out. I’m sure you’ll still enjoy it just as much though whether it’s solo, with a group, or with a guy.

Go and enjoy yourself @readingclaygirl .
I’ve threatened to bring my OOS beautiful , smart and sassy goddaughter in for prom weekend to start some tongues wagging.

Speaking of proms, I am in charge of putting it together this year. The other day we (the prom committee and I) met with a DJ who also will decorate the place where we are holding prom. He told us to make a wish list of what we wanted him to do to the building and he would give us an estimate. We threw in everything we could think of and figured once the estimate came we would deduct what we could do without. As it turns out, his estimate was 1/2 of what we were expecting it to be.

@readingclaygirl, I actually like the idea of groups of friends going to prom instead of individual dates. There have been so many times that I have seen guys go out of there way to ask a girl to prom and the girl trying to avoid the guy so he can’t ask, or just settling going with him. I remember one prom where a girl went with a guy and he is posted on fb what a great date she was, while another guy posted a pic showing her sitting on his lap kissing him. I’ve also seen girls who didn’t go to prom because no one asked and thought it was sad. Go with your friends and have a blast, with groups there are no expectations.

At my school there is a girl who has been like a daughter to me, she and S are the leaders of their class, they already decided they are going together.

This just reminded me, I need mysonsmom to get a prom dress, she is chaperoning with me.

Here, prom is for juniors. don’t think D will go–only seniors who do are ones who are going out with juniors, pretty much. There is one more dance (in winter) that I think she will attend. I’m more intrigued that S18 may go (he has yet to attend any dances.)

D is on ASB and will be helping plan the prom, so of course, she will go, date or not. But they mostly go in groups anyway. And it’s for the whole school-even most of the teachers went last year. They haven’t even started talking about it yet, though. I know D has been looking at dresses online, but we’re nowhere close to buying one. She is very hard to fit-top and bottom halves are two entirely different sizes. We had good luck last year with one of those places where you send your exact measurements and get back a custom-made dress at a price no more than anything in the stores. And no tailoring needed. Amazon to the rescue-nothing she tried on locally fit at all.
