Funny @Booajo - prom here is only for Seniors.
It is a toss up as to whether DS will go. If so, it would be with a group of friend.

My sonās group of friends are not quite prom people, more gamer nerds. I think Iām more upset that heās not going than he is.
@carolinamom2boys, I always tell kids to go, I tell them if they donāt have a good time then it is only a few hours of their lives, but if they have a great time it will be something they will always remember.
I agree, but DS16 is so shy, but he does have a few friends from academic team and science team that are dating , and one of the girls doesnāt have a date. Heās got a good friend , who is very direct , who I think may convince him to go with one of her friends. At least heās a boy, so it shouldnāt be too difficult to get a tux. Fingers crossed.
I find it so funny guys ask a couple weeks before- at my school your prom contract(with date) is turned in in May and prom this year is June 18, 4 days before graduation
S has a gf of nearly two years now. She graduated last year, so that was the prom they attended. He isnāt so much into such things, but went to go with her, and enjoyed the evening, I think. I seriously doubt heāll go this year. Itās just before AP exams, and a few weeks before her finals start, so if anything, he may go visit her for the weekend.
I have a couple of the wallet photos from the prom, but didnāt get around to ordering a few others before they timed out at the photographerās, I guess. Iām really glad he went, though.
DS went last year at the urging of his senior teammates, with a friend as a date. Had a good time. Is going to 2 proms this year since his GF is from a neighboring HS. I am glad he is going again. He may not be able to come home for his GFās senior prom so I am glad they are going to both. It will be pricey but the HSs are quite different from each other so I am sure the proms will be as well. Are there any prom scholarships?
No prom scholarships, but if they are different schools, couldnāt they wear the same thing?
@critter - welcome back and thank you!! Heās really looking forward to the YES-W program. And I hope to attend at least long enough to see Meg Urry.
@readingclaygirl - for my senior prom I also asked three boys; the third one did say yes. But we had little in common and I played chess with my friends while he played basketball with his, for most of the party. Donāt worry - whatever is upsetting in high school makes a great story for the rest of your life. And those boys missed out! I do encourage you to go with your sister or friends or whomever, though.
ETA:
@cheeringsection - at my DSās school there are prom scholarships. We qualified (he goes there due to my teaching, and our income is much lower than the median). Even after the scholarship that came automatically at our income, it was something like $60 for one ticket. We could have applied for more of a scholarship, but I didnāt want to do that. (Maybe the FAFSA people are in collusion with these financial aid for prom decisions, because I felt like our EFC from FAFSA was also on the high side.
)
Itās also the case that the tux rental place near DSās school offers a % off for those on free/reduced lunch.
@fretfulmother Iām definitely going. Just not with my sister, she has 3 friends sheāll go with-girls Iām not friends with. Besides I donāt want to be in the way. The guys I asked are all really nice- one is planning to ask a girl, one thinks he has a date, and the third isnāt going to prom. Cost wise- Im not sure what our prom tickets will come in at. But there is a policy that people who get free or reduced lunch get free prom tickets. I donāt know how I feel about that- I guess a reduced cost would be more reasonable especially since the class government has to cover the costs and prom is already expensive.
Just saw this on another part of CC, Berkeley is letting 2,000 applicants know if they got in on Feb. 12th. Although being the astute parents you all are, Iām probably last to know lol.

Love the idea of a prom scholarship @fretfulmom.
There are shops around here that offer prom dresses to teens who otherwise would not be able to afford to buy a new dress ā I think it is great that that is available. My D has not said whether or not she is going - she went last year with a very good friend and as part of a larger group, so sheās had the experience, but now that guy is off at college and I donāt know if she really wants to go. Last year she was on the prom committee as part of Stuco, and it was an interesting experience for her. Prom tickets are $40 and include dinner ā I think it is a great price.
@carlson2 Great price! Ours go from anywhere from $65 to $80 depending on the year.
@mysonsdad. This is for regents, right. I knew the day was coming but was not sure which day it was, so you are not alone.
Congratulations to your daugher @petrichor11
Congratulations to all on the acceptances and scholarships! Whew!
Welcome @3tallblonds !
My friendās daughter did a fundraiser at her HS and part of the money for was stuff like prom or other events when kids didnāt have the money. Itās too bad everyone doesnāt have prom scholarships!
I know proms are really expensive in most places. Our school actually only had a real prom for the first time last year. Itās only been around for 5 graduating classes. They kept locations to ones that were really affordable so that tickets were maybe $25 each? And I know they had scholarships. There are no limos or hotel room rentals, so a lot of the kids can manage to afford it. Dās best friend wore a dress sheād worn in a wedding and no one wore tuxes.
His junior year my brother was invited to 3 proms and went to all of them. My mother worked out a deal for the tux rental. My nephew-in-law was invited to the prom at the private school of a (Bill) Gates relative some years back. The girlās family paid for everything, even the tux rental. For that one, there WAS a limo!
That would be Dās friends. There are kids who go to our schoolās prom as just friends, but Dās group is not among them. Theyād rather be online, gaming or posting things to DeviantArt.
:thud: Thatās more than our tickets are without a scholarship. Itās interesting to see regional differences. Does your school include a dinner (ours doesnāt; last year the kids S went with ended up going for Chinese beforehand), or is it just the dance?
On the prom front- Iām curious if anyone has heard of girls having a group on Facebook where everyone posts dress pictures so no one gets the same dress. It goes on at my school and is very ridiculous in my mind. My mom wonāt let either of us participate in that madness because itās so ridiculous. I donāt see the big deal if two girls have the same dress. Itās a dress! If itās the one you like, you should get it
