A year ago Labor Day, my former neighbors and friend’s lost their 19 year old daughter in a car accident where she was ejected from a vehicle after hitting a tree and not wearing her seatbelt . We were not extremely close at the time, but we often spent holidays with this family and I remembered this girl as a child. 6 months later her brother committed suicide by overdosing . I felt physically ill. My heart went out to my friends, but mostly for their other two children who were just 16 and 12. It still upsets me to think about it.
Addicts- yeah there are definitely those at my school.Even in my own middle class, good neighborhood. One guy whose family has always been a little strange dropped out last year. Another one who I was actually friends with ended up suspended a good part of 10th grade for drugs but is clean now as far as I know. That’s the one that hit me the most because he was such a good, smart kid.
love your attitude, @petrichor11 !
So sorry to hear about your son’s loss @CAMidwestMom.
@petrichor11 I am glad that you have moved on from that employer.
@LKnomad I hope your DS is better soon. My DS has had walking pneumonia in the past and it was quite a long recovery. He really had to force himself to slow down and allow himself to heal.
I just booked the last sport-related trip with DS. It is truly odd to think that something we have done for so many years is ending. I intend to enjoy every minute of the upcoming season but I keep having flashbacks of past “final game” nights. The boys just hang out for a VERY long time afterwards as if they can stretch out their season just a bit longer. One Mom told me that when her son was a senior, he and the other boys stayed long past dark throwing the ball around and remembering good times. I will not make it home that night without tears but I will still go home grateful for the memories.
Sorry for your situation @petrichor11 but I’m glad you’re husband no longer works there.
Wow @carolinamom2boys, that is truly horrendous. That poor family. I guess we must always attempt to appreciate the good times when they happen.
@CAMidwestMom It was horrendous , but it sure keeps things in perspective. What amazes me is how the family has survived this tremendous loss.
Hate crimes, pregnancies and drug overdoses, it is overwhelming.
Our biggest frustration today was D16’s EA deferral to regular admission for Ithaca College BS/DPT program.
So sorry to hear about the deferral @labegg !
@carolinamom2boys, what a tragic story, I feel so bad for that family.
@petrichor11, I got nailed in taxes also, so you’re not alone, but mine was my own fault.
@labegg, I keep telling S that isn’t it nice to know that his biggest problem right now is he may end up at a super safety school. One of his friends is worried that his mom won’t live long enough to make it to graduation. Like @carolinamom2boys said, “It’s all about perspective.”
@Mysonsdad
I am so sorry to here this one as well it is particularly hard to lose one’s mom- especially at that age, around graduation time
@carolinamom2boys
I am also sorry to hear of the loss that you have shared with your friends.
I hope we hear some better news some time later this week. My brother died in car accident at 18 the second week of February. Ever since, I have always thought this time of winter is such a dreary time- especially in cold weather areas where it seems like winter has lasted forever by February. We are just around the corner from spring. Looking forward to that.
@MidwestMomTo2, I like your (relatively) new profile pic!
Welcome @3tallblonds, @nubble16.
Laughed (in sympathy) at your crying at the cash register, @labegg! @critter, for sure I remember you! Howdy!
@labegg and @petrichor11 and others, my brother is a creative director for Assassin’s Creed. I will pass along all these comments and he will love them. D16 is a gamer when she’s not doing her million + 1 ECs (and I’ve grown to love the time she spends gaming in our basement because I can catch up on CC!).
Our high school (which has a very economically diverse student body) has a Cinderella’s Closet, where kids can “shop” and borrow suits and dresses. A good solution for kids who simply can’t buy prom duds.
Hugs to @kandcsmom and @CAMidwestMom–super sad news.
So we’re trending a little sad right now, but I missed the weekend party, and what a party it was, so congrats to @carolinamom2boys, @petrichor11, @sseamom, @fretfulmother, @collegemom2boys, @kittymom1102, @Ballerina016, @SouthFloridaMom9, @dcplanner, @LKnomad, @PAO2008, @crowlady, @lvmjac1, @Mom2jl, AWW HECK, CONGRATS to the WHOLE DARN THREAD and all the great kids and parents!!!
@labegg, boo, sorry to hear about the deferral. More waiting. :-/
Sorry about D’s deferral @labegg @Mysonsdad there is a girl in my grade worried about the same thing. So sad. It’s just sad to know 4 of my classmates have lost a parent since seventh grade. That’s 4 too many
We have the same program, as well as girls who just trade around dresses. And several thrift shops in the area, utilised by the people whose economic realities make it practical and those who just think it’s fun. My D has her favorite and would buy all her clothes there. S buys a lot of dress shirts second-hand. He has to wear white ones with his band uniform, and having six of them means I don’t have to do emergency laundry! So thank God for the hipsters, the cosplayers, and the relentlessly practical, who blur the lines of economic realities.
Also, awesome about the Assassin’s Creed connection. S would be tickled…after he rolled his eyes about my invisible friends.
I’m getting misty just reading this. S’s last competition this year (for an EC he’s been involved in since sixth grade) is at our hometown community center. It’s the last time I’ll see him (or the other seniors, many of whom I’ve known since early elementary) in that uniform, in all likelihood. One is heading off to the Marines; two to out of state colleges. I can imagine our kids stretching it out as well.
@carolinamom2boys That’s the kind of situation that makes the whole financial thing jump right into perspective. Life could be so, so much harder. I’m (and of course this goes without saying) gratified that it is not, and while my hert aches for your friends, I’m glad of the reminder.
Also, I just opened my mail to find another acceptance for D…from FAMU. Yes, she already got one. And she also already got an email before that telling her she couldn’t be admitted unless she retook her ACT and scored higher, which she declined to do.
I’d heard their admission office was a little disorganized, but this is weird.
One of DS’s best friends shared with him that he is committing to a school to play the sport they played together since middle school. DS is thrilled for him but also a little disappointed that this means they will not be at the same school. There was a good chance that they would and had talked about being roomies, unless athletes had separate housing. Sadly, the offer to play never came from that school so he has selected one from his other offers. This is becoming more real for my DS every day.
@Cheeringsection I’m sorry for your son. It’s becoming more real for all of our kids everyday even though many of them have major decisions looming.
Im sorry to hear about all these kids going thru so much.
@petrichor11 that is bad news.
@CAMidwestMom I am so sorry for the loss of your sons friend sister. We have had a similar loss.
Good news last evening, daughter received another outside scholarship and was notified that she is a semi finalist in another one. She has spent so much time applying I am glad she is getting results.
