Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@cheeringsection - sorry if it was mentioned before - what sport does he play?

Congratulations @Sophmore1 ! It is always nice to hear about hard work rewarded.

@texaspg my son’s friend will be playing soccer.

Well, so many stories being brought up that really bring home the harsh realities of life and how college is just a small part of the overall picture. In my neck of the woods we have a viral racist video from students at one high school that is sparking protests, and the arrest of a 2015 graduate for murder at another. The latter was a cross-country star at my S’s high school – S doesn’t know him personally but many of his friends do.

@crowlady Is that the Virginia Tech student?

@carolinamom2boys Yes, it is the VaTech student. A horrible tragedy. I tried to have a meaningful conversation with my son about racism in schools (he goes to a very diverse high school and I’m hoping the climate is better than the other nearby school) but he was too distracted by the Iowa caucuses and the murder.

I think the girl was from NC and only 14 years old.

I havent heard why they killed this 13-14 year old??

^^I don’t think anyone knows yet, but I read that the VT male student allegedly knew the girl.

I just read the Washington Post article; the Va. Tech student went to my wife’s HS.

A friend’s D goes to VT and knew the boy by sight, but wasn’t friends with him. Did not know the female involved. The situation reminds me a little of that couple in Canada who abducted and killed several young girls. How awful.

As far as realities hitting too close to home-D told me last night that the president of ASB had to reschedule the ASB meeting because he was unable to get to school-his family lost their apartment. They’re staying with relatives in the same area, so hopefully he will be able to get to school easily enough, but yesterday he had to help move the family. He’s a senior waiting on college acceptances. What a wrench thrown into the mix at this time!

He had been contacting her on social media, the girl that’s been arrested was an accomplice after the fact to dispose of the body. Reminds of that Texas case with the West Point cadet

Don’t want to ā€˜like’ that post, @sseamom, but do want to acknowledge the hardship and the fearful situation the young student must be in. Even when his college situation is settled, the anxiety of the impermanence his family probably often undergoes (across different aspects of living, such as for food or proper clothing each season, or the juggle of do-we-eat vs. pay-the-utilities) may make the hopefulness of turning the corner in his own life one fraught with conflicted feelings.

It is those kids that I would spin backwards around the Earth for.

In the best scenario I can think of, the VTech student lured the girl out for something her parents would not have approved of and she accidentally died (she was on serious meds). Then the college students tried to cover it up. But there are worse scenarios, too. My S said he has no friends he could call on to help cover up a murder and can’t imagine being asked by someone else (I guess I should be glad?). So sad for the girl and her family, and a reminder that bad decisions can ruin so many lives.

And then there are students who are homeless or hurting, for whatever reason. I will try to hug my children and appreciate all we have. I hope they can have some compassion for others in this period of their lives that can be so selfish.

@Waiting2exhale we are fortunate that the school already spins backwards if necessary to help all the kids as needed. The faculty and staff rallied to find a new home for a family that got burned out of their apartment last year and for awhile one of the staff was giving a homeless boy a ride to school every morning. I can’t say enough about the people at this school, they all go above and beyond. Since local kids are given first priority (it’s a public school) and the middle classrooms always have waiting lists, it was just luck that we visited when a rare vacancy opened up back when D was a 7th grader.

I hope things for D’s friend work out-he is the 2nd youngest in a huge family and they all seem to rally around each other. He’s a good kid with lots of promise. I hope he’s able to navigate everything. It’s easy to forget that not everyone has the advantages so many college-bound kids have before they even get to kindergarten.

Just got a notification from my AP app that the investigation shows the 13 year old Virginia girl died of stabbing on day she vanished.

So very sad.

I passed my Regents! I only got a 70 but I passed. And only 11 out of 50 did.

Congrats @readingclaygirl

@readingclaygirl Way to go!!

Thank you! @carolinamom2boys @CAMidwestMom @LKnomad I really appreciate everyone here cheering me on.
