@critter We have never visited. The campus looks beautiful and the programs wonderful. S is interested in Mechanical Engineering or Math or Physics.

I think that the only minus he sees in the school is the location - TN. Right now he has a good offer from NEU, which has the advantage of being located in Boston. In addition, NEU is offering full tuition. So, two pluses …

Let’s see what happens. There are many more schools he needs to hear from.

Congrats @kittymom1102 and welcome @morningside95

@kittymom1102 - Cross-posted! See above^^^

I don’t think they cover much of the airfare these days. Maybe $100 for MOSAIC? The financial aid is great at Vandy. Not many places even match it, especially with the no-loan policy. I know for us Yale was better the first year, and I think Harvard too, but that’s about it. They are very generous. And I know what you mean about the price tag!

@kittymom1102 Congrats!!!

Update: got more than full tuition, but less than full ride. Cost would be totally manageable–less than I spent for preschool 15 years ago. Still slightly disappointing (because full ride would have been awesome!)

Only confusion is letter just talks about 1st year. But we need this to continue obviously. I have not seen letter–just basing off D’s report.

@kittymom1102, how wonderful!!

Hoping it all works out in D’s favor @Booajo

Back from our visit to chilly WI for D16’s accepted student/scholarship competition. D16 did decide to sit for the scholarship exam and she actually turned it in! Don’t think it will amount to anything but she is glad she gave it a go. She was happy with the rest of the visit and the school has moved in to the #1 choice spot. It wasn’t a ā€œWOW, this is the placeā€ kind of weekend more of a satisfied ā€œYeah, this would be goodā€.

Just have 2 more accepted student visits in mid-March and she has set herself the goal of deciding by the end of March…fingers crossed she will be able to take the plunge and commit. Still waiting to hear on 1 outstanding EA deferral.

We also managed to squeeze in independent walk around campus visits for D18 to Loyola and DePaul this weekend too!

Glad your weekend went well @labegg Good for your D for actually sitting for the exam-I know there was a lot of anxiety surrounding it. No matter what happens from the results, she has to be proud of herself for doing it

I’ve missed a couple of days for our visit & lots happened!

Congrats to all- acceptances, scholarships & visits!!
Welcome aboard @morningside95 / welcome back @AsleepAtTheWheel
Sorry for the problems @LKnomad

We had a great visit to the 2 honors programs for DS. Hope this seals the deal!

Wow! @kittymom1102 Congratulations to your son!

To all the parents whose kids are getting invited to visit schools so early, and flown out to boot, your kids must be amazing students and people! One of my favorite parts of our college visits these past 2 years have been the amazing kids we met on the tours. From all over, and so accomplished. I don’t know how they fit all they do into 24 hours a day. So excited for all the great kids my S16 will meet at Grinnell. 17%, on avg are international students. Only about 20% are from the Midwest, so DS is really excited for all the new people he’ll meet. Esp. after 13 years in the same school district.

Thanks for the warm welcome @happymochi & @ChicagoSportsFn !

And, from one Midwest transplant from CA to another, good to connect with you again, @CAMidwestMom ! (Are you saying you are not only from a family of 6, but actually ~have~ six children? Yikes! I mean, congratulations! I bow down to you! I started too late to have more than 2, but did have an interesting dream last year, that I was having baby no. 3. I was excited at first, in my dream, but then remembered that I’m 53! ) :open_mouth:

Thank you @DAPIStained @GoodGrief16 @morningside95

In case I missed someone, Thanks Everyone!

I just arrived home and realized something … S won’t be able to attend the Mosaic Weekend at Vandy because Scholars Weekend at NEU takes place that same weekend.

He already booked his trip for NEU, which the university paid, and is looking forward to Boston :slight_smile:

He’ll have to let Vandy know that he is already book with some other commitment. Hopefully this won’t have any impact on his Financial Aid.

@morningside95 hello fellow transplant! We left Calif shortly after our marriage and landed in St Louis in 99. We’ve been very happy here and it’s been a great place to raise our kids. Yes, there are six. S16 is number three, so we are still in the thick of it. Our oldest two are fully self-supporting now, which is awesome. I hit the big 50 last year so no more babies here either, but my sister has a brand new baby that I’ve enjoyed snuggling with immensely.

Woo hoo! Congrats on the acceptances and scholarship offers! Sounds like lots of ppl were traveling. I hope your visits bring your DC closer to their final decisions. Welcome @morningside95!

And thanks for the welcome, @bookmom7 too! Good luck making a decision. Did you travel far for your DS’s visits? (Sorry, you may have said already but being new, I am not up on all the recent posts.)

Too bad, @kittymom1102. A good friend’s S15, here in MN, is attending NEU and really loving it. He went on a special program, to study abroad in Ireland, with several of his classmates during his very first semester. I’d never heard of that before. At least, being from MN, he is adjusting easily to the Boston winter weather. MA/Boston is a popular destination for the graduates from our HS.

@CAMidwestMom - Jealous of your snuggling time! We’ve been in Mpls, MN since 1995 and love it here, but stilll make it back to CA, often to spend time w/ my "old’ LMU friends, once a year. (Can you tell I’m fond of my Alma mater!)

@labegg - Our nephew (class of '14) is at Marquette and very happy. He was raised all over the country, as the son of an Army Officer, and found WI to be his favorite place to be. Milwaukee is a smaller city, but has a lot to offer. And it is nice to be somewhat close the water. Good luck w/ your D16’s decisions. Sounds like she has a lot of schools to chose from. We will definitely be taking advantage of EA applications w/ our DS17.

Connecting with all of you is addictive… I’ve got to get back to work, then get to S17’s Speech team meeting! (And I found the ā€œParent of HS Class of 2017ā€ too!)

Welcome morningside95, welcome back asleepatthewheel, and congrats to all on the good news. My D’s NMF letter came today, but there was no mention of a certificate from her HS (sigh). There is scholarship essay writing ongoing in our house, which makes for a somewhat grumpy D.

@kittymom1102 Congrats!
@morningside95 Congrats to your S!

@LKnomad Sorry the teacher is being ridiculous. I would definitely take this up the flagpole at the school. Nonsensical behavior like this by teachers makes me crazy. Still dealing with the horrible BC Calculus situation - I’m learning more and more kids (including at least one who got into an ivy ED) did poorly on the mid term. I’m digressing but I don’t understand how teachers can be this way, especially with AP classes. Don’t they get that the kids that take these classes are electing to do so and therefore provide the teachers with the ability to teach the most motivated students? I hope you get things resolved for your S. If not, I can email the principal for you. :wink:

I will say that when my D was a junior at WashU, she got very sick with mono about 4 weeks into the semester. All of her professors were very supportive and flexible with her. In the beginning, she was sleeping at least 16 hours a day and could not go to classes for several weeks. It lasted most of the semester. She ended up dropping a dance class but kept all of her academic classes including a very upper level course that required a 25 page paper. The professors were extremely understanding and often let D turn things in a week late.They would email her information too. She just could not keep up. Anyway, they trusted that she was doing the best she could under the circumstance and tried to work with her. For a high school kid like your S, who probably was rarely out of school and usually does all of his work, he should be given the benefit of the doubt in this situation.
