@Mysonsdad we still didn’t receive that postcard from UCSB. Isn’t it funny how UC admission works?

What? It’s their loss, your daughter has better options. I am surprised because a top student in my class didn’t get one either.

Congratulations @happymochi

Just dropped off S at his DE class. I had to pay $140 just for the textbook. Ten minutes after he entered class he texted me and told me he needs the actual text book. I had only got him the workbook. I can only imagine how much the book is. Oh well, tuition was only $10.

@Mysonsdad why don’t you just rent a textbook from many textbook rental places online? I rented textbooks when DD was taking DE classes.

You’re Lucky @Mysonsdad here if you take one of the classes off the “approved list” you pay $150 a class. I found out D’s DE CAL III class is not on the approved list and had to pay $1200 for the class!

We are really lucky with DE apparently–when you enroll with HS permission, tuition and books are free! I was shocked on our recent tour how expensive books were.

And not only do I fantasize about all the schools that get posted here, I have already added a few to my growing list for S18. Lucky him!

@mysonsdad I just returned my sons DE textbook which was $137. I found a version on Amazon to rent for $15. We lucked out. For some reason our local city college gets books that are specifically made for the college, in other words a common enough book, that has a Long Beach City College version and cannot be bought anywhere else. This specific teacher said to use the real version. $15! The other classes are using the specialty book.

The worst was last semester for Calc 2. The calc book was the CA version for almost $300. Who needs a CA version for Calculus???

Students from our city schools can attend DE at the local college for free!

I am going to look online, but he needs it by Monday. I did find out that the workbook and the textbook were together, so I didn’t have to spend anymore money.

Ok, what’s DE???

Dual Enrollment. Classes at local community college.

We are lucky that we don’t have to pay for our DE Multi-Var and Matrix Algebra classes unless you want a college transcript in addition to the HS credit. They do charge $500 per semester for the full college credit though. Wehave had to pay for all the others though.

DE=Dual Enrollment. It doesn’t seem to be a big thing at our school, or at least I’m not aware of it. Instead we pile on all the AP classes we can :-p

My S16 has informed me that he sees no reason why he can’t just wear S14’s tassel with 2014 on it, given that he’s also going to wear his brother’s cap and gown. “And what’s the deal with the ridiculous hat?”

Dual enrollment. Here it was only accepted by one school when DS was a freshman so he did not participate. The program has changed so I will have to learn how it works for DD20 to make her own decision. None of the credit would have transferred for DS so I am glad her focused on AP.

D has taken almost all her classes DE this year. No deal for tuition or books here, drats! But the expense was a nice write off for taxes, so small silver lining.

I’m guessing DE= dual enrollment.

Here the juniors and seniors can take dual enrollment classes. My D just took an English composition class because AP lang was not offered at her hs. They give a discount but even then it was $900.
They did not need a textbook though.

For first semester D spent about $700 for books, German was the most expensive at over $300. But all the books are good for two semesters which is nice. She rented one, but then had to purchase online access code. The third one was cheaper new with the access code.

But we got this money back with the American Opportunity tax credit.

Speaking of taxes. This is the first year DD has to file her own tax return and pay taxes on her earnings. Giving the fact that she also has to pay self employed tax should I mention that she finds the taxation system outrageous?

DE isn’t done much here either. The most serious students are in the IB program or loaded up on AP classes.
