Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

So @happymochi - This kind of disproves the whole homeschoolers can’t get into the CSUs and UCs myth. When you can catch your breath sometime I would love to know that path that your son took to get to where he is. Did you do a lot of dual enrollment, coops, individual curriculum, SAT subject tests, self made AP classes, self study AP tests, classical ed, etc etc etc etc. Inquiring homeschoolers want to know! Since you are in CA and in the same area as we are, your experiences are especially enlightening.

@Ballerina016 & @happymochi Cal Poly SLO has such a great campus and town, although D’s friends there give low marks for the freshman dorms and dining. D would have applied in a heartbeat if we were in-state, and I would have being visiting all the time. Congrats!

Thank you, everyone!

@LKnomad We know many homeschoolers who have gotten admitted to UCs and CSUs, especially the higher tier ones (which look at apps more holistically). I think they are slowly catching up with the privates in figuring out how to assess us unconventional folks, now that we’re much more mainstream than in the past. Please PM me your email address, and we can chat more.

Congrats @happymochi and @Ballerina016 !

Congrats to all the Cal Poly admits!

Gone for a day, and forum is buzzing. Congrats to all.

In our situation, indeed, the scholarship is renewable for “up to 8 semesters”. And it covers full tuition plus room (she’ll have to pay to eat I guess!) I’m excited, but she seems blase. I think she is holding out hope for another full ride she’s applied for. I think that one is much less like (more competitive, well known school). But who knows.

@Ballerina016 and @happymochi congrats!
@Booajo that is a great scholarship offer! Good luck on the full ride application your daughter is hoping for hopefully she will have many great offers to choose from.

Congrats to the Cal Poly SLO admits. I went to a two week journalism camp there the summer before my senior year. It was one of the most memorable experiences of high school and the campus was so nice. It sure would be a gorgeous place to hang out for four years!

Congratulations to all the Cal Poly SLO admits and scholarships

My screen name is a tribute to pro wrestling legend the Mongolian Stomper (actually from Alberta). I can see why folks would focus on the “ms” part.

Congrats @happymochi and @Ballerina016 . Not to rain on scholarship parades, but many people are not aware that only the tuition, fees and books portion of a scholarship is tax free. Room and board is taxable . Just wanted to pass this on so people can plan accordingly .

Thanks @Justathought1 I’m terrible at linking things .

Well, D didn’t get a university-wide scholarship for the school she will attend this fall. We didn’t expect it because it was a reach school and her stats were very average/below average to those they admit. I asked D before she applied ED if she was sure she wanted to go to a school where she wouldn’t be the brainiac anymore and where more than 90%+ of the incoming class graduated in the 10% of their class. She said she wanted to go anyway because she absolutely loved everything about the school.

To help cushion the below, she did ask a boy to her school’s Sadie Hawkins dance and he said yes. It’s sort of mixed for me- glad a boy liked her enough to say yes, but nervous in that she’s liking boys (and a boy likes her). This stuff wasn’t supposed to happen until after grad school.

@ChicagoSportsFn Sorry about the scholarship but yay about the boy! <:-P

@ChicagoSportsFn It sounds like your DD will make her first-choice school her own! Love that attitude.

First of all…congrats to ALL who have heard good news recently on admissions or scholarships! I am not organized enough to list each person and acknowledge personally - so sorry! Love, love, love to hear the great news…and also hate, hate hate to hear that others are still waiting (or have heard bad news). The bad news breaks my heart…because all the kiddos here represented by you parents seem to be amazing and destined for great things.

I have to admit (rather sheepishly!) that when folks on here list acceptances and rave about a school, I often go “look” at that school online and secretly wish perhaps my S16 would have applied there (because so many sound fabulous). If application deadlines were not already past… I would have added at least 20 or 30 more schools to my S’s list just because so many on here are so excited about particular schools!!!

Am I weird or what…

@ChicagoSportsFn My D14 brainiac was really motivated to attend a school where many (or most) were smarter than her…she felt she would fit in better, AND she was tired of being the “smart one” with not much in common with her high school peers.

She is THRIVING at the school she picked…where everyone is as smart or smarter than her!

@4kids2graduate not weird at all. I feel the same.

I end up googling all the schools I hear about on here.
