Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

I didn’t realize UChicago was D’s first choice. I’m really not as upset as she is.

@ProbDeferred sorry about Chicago. You are not alone with your thoughts. My sister in law works in admissions for a top university and she explains it as a crapshoot. They are really trying to fill a class - URM, international, Minorities, 1st gen, legacy, etc. etc. My D16 has worked to acheive top SAT, perfect GPA, NMF, lots of ec’s and she will probably get rejected from all of the top schools she applied to just because she is what they call an LMO (like most others). There are thousands of kids that apply to each school with the same stats. They just don’t have the room and if there isn’t something that truly makes them stand out, then its a flip of the coin. Nothing against all of those wonderful students (incl. my d) but there just isn’t enough room at their school. I can assure you that wherever you go, you will make the most of the situation and you will go on to do wonderful things. My D is resigned that she will just go to our state school. (I don’t mind…it’s a full ride!) But I do hope for her own self confidence that in the next 2 weeks she will be accepted into just one of the 6 schools on her list. Fingers, toes, knees crossed! Good luck to you and everyone else here!

DD just got very surprising college decision as a finalist for their full tuition scholarship. The school was her favorite for a while, but it is expensive. They normally release decisions very late in March, but I guess they do exception for those who needs to be interviewed for scholarship.

Wow! Exciting news @Ballerina016!

@dcplanner As much as the ethic here on CC seems to be to alert schools that our students are declining their offers as soon as possible, it seems pretty clear that most schools are not prepared for this behavior. Declining at this point is usually too late to impact how many students are accepted, and they likely won’t go to their waitlist until after they see what their yield is by May 1. Now, if the offer included a named merit award that is limited in number, I would think they would want to know. But again, they may have already accounted for their yield in the number they offered.

As for us, I am guessing we’ll be on USS Indecision for at least a couple of weeks into April. Who is captaining this ship? It should be one of you ED folks.

Super congrats @Ballerina016 ! Full tuition!! Good Luck to her.

Thank you everyone, but this is just an interview for full tuition. It is still a great honor as it is an excellent school and the only reach school on her list that has this kind of merit scholarship.

Good luck to your D on her interview!

DS got into UCI.

Yay! @indsfolax Great news!

UCI - had to look it up. Then, Oh! I loved that place.

I really loved the feel of that campus. The students were truly lovely people, and I could easily see my first kid there.

Congratulations to you and your son.

@indsfolax Hooray! UCI is a terrific school!

@indsfolax congrats! UCI is also on my son’s list!

@Ballerina016 It just gets better and better for your DD, CONGRATS <:-P :bz <:-P :bz <:-P :bz <:-P :bz <:-P

Good luck @Ballerina016 and congrats @indsfolax .

@Ballerina016 good luck to your DD.

@indsfolax congratulations on UCI !!

It’s 65 days to graduation, D16 is picking up her cap and gown today, and she got her financial aid package yesterday. She’ll finish up her senior project over spring break (volunteer hours). This is going too quickly!

Awesome need @indsfolax!!!

Our spring break consists of Good Friday and Easter Monday… and we still don’t get out until June.

Do you start in August or do you have fewer school days? We have 180.

Our spring break is late this year. Starts April 4th. We started the school year on the 11th of August! So early but they get out before Memorial Day. First time in ten years I think. No snow days this year.
