Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Congrats @frenchtoastlover !!! You are going to have a very difficult decision to make but as a classmate said earlier, it’s not a bad problem to have.

Hahah, thank you @carlson2! I am not sure about the record at my school, but my friend applied to 28 just to beat me…I guess the offer of a free dinner on me if he did so also didn’t deter him…

Sorry if what I did sounded really dumb. It was a offer I made in half-seriousness, half jest, didn’t think he would actually do it!

Luckily, I was able to reuse essays for many different prompts. The only ones that really took a lot of effort to complete were the “Why School” and “Why Major” essays.

Indeed, @readingclaygirl.

DS received a scholarship invitation today. How is anyone ever done with this process so spread out? Should we just stop reading email and snail mail? This one would mean he could attend the school closest to home with nearly full tuition covered with scholarships. The invite goes out to all students accepted to his declared major and there is no mention of how many awards there are. DS is unlikely to apply because he would have to commit to ME, co-op and an MBA in 5 years, but we will at least make sure he sees the invitation.

Congrats @Cheeringsection even though he might not take it!

lol, @crowlady regarding our undercover friend.

Congratulations @AnxietyAttack77 , @DAPIStained and @PAO2008 ! I hope I have not missed anyone!

Thank you for the good wishes. I think the stress is starting to go back up as DH, DS and I all realize the sorting and deciding will require quite a bit of effort. It just did not play out this way with my DD. She had heard from a lot of schools in Jan. and Feb. and was already processing what she thought of various schools. By the time she heard from the March schools, she had a pretty good idea of her top two or three. And it seemed we had more time somehow. Five schools left but two I think are pretty much out of the picture. Of the remaining three, two would be excellent options if S gets accepted. I have to keep telling myself that S has several good options. It will all work out.

Congrats to all those with good news today!

Graduations at all schools in the district where D goes to school are held at a very large venue. Large ones are in the arena itself, and for smaller schools, one of the convention rooms. They plan it out well before the start of the year, and there are usually more than one going on at once. They run all day for a few days then they’re done. Ours is in the evening-one of the large HS starts early that morning. We’re very small so it’s in a side room.

Are any of you folks having a big graduation party? We are, but a week later. With the venue for the graduation out of town and some of those coming from the opposite direction of both our town and the grad venue, it doesn’t make sense to do it the same day. We’re using the hall where I work and self-catering. If the weather’s nice, there’s a nice yard with a view of the lake.

I am at a Springsteen concert at “The dump that jumps”(LA Sports Arena) just checking in to say S got accepted to Boston College Carroll School of Management. No aid info, but at least a Yes.

S isn’t going to graduation, but it’s held in DAR Constitution Hall. It’s right after Memorial Day, so he doesn’t have long to go.

Congrats @mysonsdad

@sseamom: Your graduation venue is out of town? As in it is just the next town over, or more like you have to travel to the the center of the “city” of which your town is a satellite?

As I’m not one for celebrations, we will not have one, though my daughter did ask if I was inviting anyone, which surprised me.

Was interested in your pleasure at the items from Dormify because a few months ago I wanted to order from there but the younger daughter told me the older one would absolutely hate what I was eyeing (a duvet which was absolutely beautiful for $20, down from about $160.00). Seems the girls think my shopping for them as they head off to college ( only one goes out this year, and then one the next) is a bit smothering and completely out of line. I did it for my son, and I remind them of that. They have never thought it appropriate that I did it for him, though, so I kind of gain no points in that regard.

Oh, well. When they learn that I will transfer just the measly amount I deem appropriate to their debit cards and they begin making purchases for school bedding and such, things will come into focus a lot faster.

Wow! Busy since I last checked in (which was just a couple hours ago)!

@PAO2008 I can’t believe he wouldn’t look! In our house we have to look that VERY minute. Congrats on Brandeis Glad you were able to find out.

@AnxietyAttack77 congrats on MHC! Will you both be attending the admitted student’s weekend? My D was also accepted. She’s quite excited.

@Congrats @DAPIStained! We miss you around here!

D’s graduation is held on the school’s football field. I’ve never attended a graduation there, so I have really no idea what to expect.

@Mysonsdad congrats! Enjoy Bruuuuuce!

@mysonsdad: Enjoy the good news, enjoy the evening. Congratulations to your son.

Graduation Venue - the District Football Stadium (it’s Texas so it’s big!) No graduation party, we are lame like that - but I think all grandparents will be coming to town. We are headed out for D16’s graduation gift (trip) shortly after graduation. We changed our plan from Iceland/Europe (I seem to recall another 2016 family is headed to Iceland?) We are going to Japan (airfare was less than flying to Europe, go figure)!

@labegg we have been contemplating Iceland, but fares recently jumped, so no tickets have been purchased.

We were too busy right around graduation so D had a party in August. Was not easy to schedule around all of her friends’ parties. We just had a cookout.

@dyiu13 I was always picking things up in town for my D, but ended up returning a lot. So your plan sounds good.

@Waiting2exhale I like the idea of a college stuff budget!

@sseamom, that was a great buy! I’m glad that my H didn’t ask how much we spent on all the college stuff.
Not even extravagant things but stocking up on supplies she might need like hair and body care, OTC medicines, contacts, office stuff, snacks, laundry and cleaning stuff, etc added up.

@Waiting2exhale It’s a little out of the ordinary…D goes to school in a neighboring district that is actually closer to us than most of Seattle, as we can literally see the southern border of Seattle from our house. We live close to the freeway and it’s a counter-commute, so a quick 15 minutes and she’s at school. The graduations are held in Tacoma, another 15 minutes south from THERE. So about 30 minutes from home.

As for Dormify, I found the sale, D picked out the items. Because we’re traveling so far for college, the plan was to have most dorm room items shipped to store or picked out in the college town, but these were just too cheap to ignore. With our Alaska Airlines card we now get to fly a free bag for each person on any trip, so we’ll be able to bring more with us than originally planned. Still likely to pick up most there in town though. She’ll need the space in the luggage for clothes, shoes, etc.

So sorry about this monster post, CC Friends! That’s what I get for having two very busy days and evenings. Where are my priorities?! Now, I’m worried that I have failed @crowlady :

by leaving someone out.

Well, in our house, I like to believe that it says they are sensitive, smart, and aren’t about to turn down a stray piece of cake that might come their way. I bet it is the same in your house. (@texaspg, Why in the world is there no birthday cake emoji? I mean, who needs that evil horn-blowing pig or the demented-looking dog?)

Thanks for the clarification, @dbjs70!

Congrats on the scholarship, @Justathought1, though maybe this is one where you do not want the big prize!

Hugs, @MomofMany02. Sounds like your kiddo is well grounded AND he has great choices.

Good luck getting better sleep, @Ballerina016. April 30 can’t come soon enough!

And Happy Birthday to your @Undercovermom1’s DD! (birthday cake emoji here)

Ohhhhh dear, @baltimoreguy. I don’t have any good advice. Your posts are always some of the best around, however. I know your DS must be as thoughtful as you are, and I feel sure good things will come.

Hugs for all our listmembers learning too much from CC: @baltimoreguy, @booajo, @momofzag, @carlson2, @MidwestMomTo2, @CAMidwestMom, @mrsquietstorm9 (and sometimes not learning early enough). A nerve was struck. I like MidwestMomTo2’s philosophy that she is taking one for the team when she learns early.

@ItsJustSchool, I think your plan about withdrawing from some and keeping some is wise.

@fretfulmother, love your Michelle Obama post. Keep channeling her. We might also become suspicious if we end up with someone with the username @FLOTUS.

Oh no, @ProbDeferred and @undercovermom1! Sorry about the UC rejection. Drat! Two scoops of ice cream.

Bummer about UC waitlist, @“Queen’s Mom”; Hugs, Ice cream, and the gift of equanimity.

I agree with @crowlady: let’s elect an ED captain: @AsleepAtTheWheel maybe? But no sleeping at this wheel!

We have 180 days, @mommdc, and a full week for spring break, and get out in early June. Spring break is next week for us…we are heading off to visit in-laws. :open_mouth: (Actually, I like them very much, but it’s still an apt emoji for in-laws, right?!?)

Love, love the hug story, @bookmom7.

Super advice regarding the “college not chosen” and envisioning other lives–even if our kids aren’t doing that, I bet most of us are:

DD is doing only one admitted student weekend, so I hope you will all share your and your child’s experiences–can’t wait to hear all about them!!

And now, drumroll please,

<:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P
